Prenatal Cerium Exposure and Neural Tube Defect Risk: A Case-control Study in Shanxi, China.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) exhibit a multifaceted etiology. Limited research has assessed the association between exposure to metallic and non-metallic elements and the incidence of NTDs at the elementomic level. Our study included 40 women with NTD-affected pregnancies and 119 controls in northern China's Shanxi province. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was employed to quantify 45 elements in umbilical cord serum samples collected from all participants. Thirteen elements were excluded from subsequent analysis due to a detection rate below 60%. We employed three machine learning s

Computational modelling for risk assessment of neurological disorder in diabetes using Hodgkin-Huxley model.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus, characterized by chronic glucose dysregulation, significantly increases the risk of neurological disorders such as cognitive decline, seizures, and Alzheimer's disease. As neurons depend on glucose for energy, fluctuations in glucose levels can disrupt sodium (Na⁺) and potassium (K⁺) ion channel dynamics, leading to altered membrane potential. Modeling these ionic changes enables the simulation of neuronal responses under glycemic extremes, providing valuable insights for risk assessment and personalized treatment. METHOD: The methodology utilizes Support Vector

Uncovering Key Features for Predicting Comorbid Chronic Eosinophilic Pneumonia in Chronic Rhinosinusitis via Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP) can occur concurrently with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, crucial features of comorbid CEP in patients with CRS remain unclear. METHODS: Features of comorbid CEP were thoroughly investigated using machine learning (ML). In ML, (i) highly predictable performance and (ii) high interpretability (e.g., presenting classification rules understandable to clinicians) are two objectives with a tradeoff relationship, resulting in both being simultaneously unachievable by a single ML model. In this study, for (i), ML models were examined to check

Automated detection of MRI-negative temporal lobe epilepsy with ROI-based morphometric features and machine learning.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) predominantly originates from the anteromedial basal region of the temporal lobe, and its prognosis is generally favorable following surgical intervention. However, TLE often appears negative in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), making it difficult to quantitatively diagnose the condition solely based on clinical symptoms. There is a pressing need for a quantitative, automated method for detecting TLE. METHODS: This study employed MRI scans and clinical data from 51 retrospective epilepsy cases, dividing them into two groups: 34 patients in TLE group an

Radiomics based on diffusion tensor imaging and 3D T1-weighted MRI for essential tremor diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Due to the absence of biomarkers, the misdiagnosis of essential tremor (ET) with other tremor diseases and enhanced physiologic tremor is very common in practice. Combined radiomics based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and three-dimensional T1-weighted imaging (3D-T1) with machine learning (ML) give a most promising way to identify essential tremor (ET) at the individual level and further reveal the potential imaging biomarkers. METHODS: Radiomics features were extracted from 3D-T1 and DTI in 103 ET patients and 103 age-and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). After data dimensi
