Fluid obtained from chronic and acute wounds were examined for the presence of fibronectin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, and proteinases capable of degrading both proteins. Immunoblot analysis of fluids from ten chronic wounds revealed that fibronectin and alpha 1-antitrypsin were degraded in nine of ten samples. In contrast, both fibronectin and alpha 1-antitrypsin were intact in acute wound fluids. The degradation of the inhibitor and fibronectin occurred in the same wound fluids, and these two events correlated perfectly. The epidemiologic determinants of the mammographic pattern were studied in 710 patients with aspirated gross (> 1 ml) cysts of the breast. The prevalence of the mammograms classified as P2-DY, that are considered to be associated with an increased breast cancer risk, was 636/710 or 89.6%. The cases of 11 patients with a unilateral, retinal detachment associated with hard exudate and other late sequelae of retinopathy of prematurity are described. The abnormality was first noted in the second to fourth decades of life. Ten of the patients were women and one was a man. The source of the hard exudate was thought to be telangiectatic retinal vascular abnormalities. Among the ten treated eyes, four demonstrated an improvement in visual acuity. In two cases a mass lesion was also noted in the fundus.

Pemphigus is an autoimmune blistering disease in which autoantibodies have clearly been shown to be pathogenic. Because autoantibodies are also found in uninvolved skin, further mechanisms may be important in the development of pemphigus lesions. Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy is an inherited disorder characterized by retinal traction, peripheral vitreous opacities, and subretinal and intraretinal exudates. We observed a family in which four boys (the children of three sisters) were affected with this disorder and an X-linked recessive inheritance was apparent. Severe contusion of the lens in a penetrating scleral injury of the eye of a young patient resulted in separation and bleb-like detachment of the posterior lens capsule with subcapsular accumulation of a fibrin-containing exudate. This separation of the posterior lens capsule resulting from increase of permeability with subcapsular fluid accumulation is believed to represent a possible basic mechanism of posterior lens involvement without capsule rupture secondary to ocular trauma.

This paper reports on two patients with bilateral, spontaneous choroidal and retinal detachment. One patient had scleritis, while in the other no underlying eye disease was found. No signs of orbital venous congestion were detected. Pleurisy was induced in rats by an intrapleural injection of 0.5 ml of 1% kaolin. The exudation of plasma into the pleural cavity showed two peaks at 20 min and 3-5 h after the kaolin injection. The massive inflammation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which occurs in adult mice injected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) has been analyzed by flow microfluorometry (FMF). The great majority of the T cells detected by direct examination of freshly obtained CSF were found to be Lyt-2+, with an almost total absence of L3T4+ lymphocytes. Intrapleural injections of carrageenan into rats resulted in peak increases in intrapleural inflammatory cell counts (90% mononuclear cells) and fibronectin content at 3 days after the injections. Administration of disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARD) prevented the increases in both fibronectin levels and intrapleural cell counts, whereas nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, in general, potentiated the increases. Inhibition of fibronectin production by DMARD in carrageenan induced pleurisy in rats may be related to the antirheumatic activity of this class of drugs.

Aztreonam (AZT), a new monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic, was studied on the transfer into intrapelvic tissues and on the clinical efficacy in the treatment of 19 cases of obstetrical and gynecological infections.
