Early behavioral predictors of injurious pecking: exploration of behavioral profiles in two commercial strains of laying hens.

Injurious pecking remains one of the most persistent welfare and economic challenge in the egg industry. Despite decades of research, its multifactorial nature makes it hard to prevent and manage. In this longitudinal experimental study, we used an innovative approach to identify the behavioral profile of high peckers (P+) compared to low peckers (P-) in two strains of Lohmann laying hens: the Lohmann LSL classic and the Lohmann Brown classic (N = 90 per strain). These animals were tested in two test rounds at 5-10 weeks and 18-23 weeks of age to measure a panel of behavioral traits. Each roun

Molecular Characterization of Highly Pathogenic Marek's Disease Virus Strain in Vaccinated Iraqi Pullets.

BACKGROUND: Marek's disease (MD) remains a severe economic concern in poultry industry globally despite decades of vaccination strategies. Particularly challenging are viral infections due to Marek's disease virus (MDV) (Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2, GaHV-2) strains that can escape immune defenses in areas that do not have access to molecular surveillance data. OBJECTIVE: This study performed molecular epidemiology of MDV in Iraqi commercial poultry based on extensive characterization of circulating strains, quantification of subclinical infection in vaccinated flocks, and phylogenetic sequencin

A Cross-Sectional Study on Parakeets Feeding and Housing Practices in Italy.

Italy has one of the largest companion bird populations in Europe. This study aimed to investigate feeding and housing practices among Italian parakeet owners. An online questionnaire was distributed, yielding 433 voluntary responses. Participants were classified as hobbyists (HBY; ≤ 13 birds owned) or breeders (BRD; > 13 birds owned) to evaluate differences between groups. All BRD and 67.4% of HBY owned more than one bird (p < 0.001), while 74.9% of HBY and 30.5% of BRD (p < 0.001) reported owning only one bird species. Budgerigars were the most frequently reported species (overall: 40.2%), f

The interaction effects of the naked neck gene and housing system on egg production, egg quality, blood biochemical parameters and immunity of laying hens under hot climate.

OBJECTIVE: Poultry producers use alternative housing arrangements, such as free-range systems, to allow birds to express their natural behaviors and to enhance consumer confidence in poultry products. Free-range systems provide hens with access to open spaces and better airflow, offering opportunities for thermoregulation through natural behaviors such as seeking shade or dust bathing. Compared to confined cage conditions, this can help reduce the negative effects of heat stress. In this study, we examined the productivity of laying hens segregated for the naked neck gene (Na) and raised in tw

Connecting gut microbiomes and short chain fatty acids with the serotonergic system and behavior in Gallus gallus and other avian species.

The chicken gastrointestinal tract has a diverse microbial community. There is increasing evidence for how this gut microbiome affects specific molecular pathways and the overall physiology, nervous system and behavior of the chicken host organism due to a growing number of studies investigating conditions such as host diet, antibiotics, probiotics, and germ-free and germ-reduced models. Systems-level investigations have revealed a network of microbiome-related interactions between the gut and state of health and behavior in chickens and other animals. While some microbial symbionts are crucia

[GnRH agonist implants in small animal practice - what do we know 13 years following EU registration?].

The availability of GnRH agonist implants offers the possibility of a reversible, temporary downregulation of endocrine and germinative testicular function in male dogs and hobs. This review provides an overview of the registered indication, the induction of temporary infertility in healthy, intact, sexually mature male dogs (4.7 and 9.4 mg deslorelin) and hobs (9.4 mg deslorelin) as well as various off-label indications. Off-label use requires strict indications, informed consent from the owner and a lack of licensed medication (safe and optimum effect). Off-label indications in the male dog

PCV2 Induces Reactive Oxygen Species To Promote Nucleocytoplasmic Translocation of the Viral DNA Binding Protein HMGB1 To Enhance Its Replication.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is an important swine pathogen that causes significant economic losses to the pig industry. PCV2 interacts with host cellular factors to regulate its replication. High-mobility-group box 1 (HMGB1) protein, a major nonhistone protein in the nucleus, was recently discovered to participate in viral infections. Here, we demonstrate that nuclear HMGB1 negatively regulated PCV2 replication as shown by overexpression of HMGB1 or blockage of its nucleocytoplasmic translocation with ethyl pyruvate. The B box domain was essential in restricting PCV2 replication. Nuclear

The Tegument Protein pUL47 of Marek's Disease Virus Is Necessary for Horizontal Transmission and Is Important for Expression of Glycoprotein gC.

Viral tropism and transmission of herpesviruses are best studied in their natural host for maximal biological relevance. In the case of alphaherpesviruses, few reports have focused on those aspects, primarily because of the few animal models available as natural hosts that are compatible with such studies. Here, using Marek's disease virus (MDV), a highly contagious and deadly alphaherpesvirus of chickens, we analyze the role of tegument proteins pUL47 and pUL48 in the whole life cycle of the virus. We report that a virus lacking the UL48 gene (vΔUL48) is impaired in growth in cell culture and

Physical Health Problems and Environmental Challenges Influence Balancing Behaviour in Laying Hens.

With rising public concern for animal welfare, many major food chains and restaurants are changing their policies, strictly buying their eggs from non-cage producers. However, with the additional space in these cage-free systems to perform natural behaviours and movements comes the risk of injury. We evaluated the ability to maintain balance in adult laying hens with health problems (footpad dermatitis, keel damage, poor wing feather cover; n = 15) using a series of environmental challenges and compared such abilities with those of healthy birds (n = 5). Environmental challenges consisted of v

Clostridial dermatitis and cellulitis: an emerging disease of turkeys.

Clostridial dermatitis of turkeys (CDT) has emerged as a major issue across most geographic regions of the United States. The prevalence and severity of dermatitis has increased over the last several years, since the time it was first reported in 1993. Cellulitis in poultry can be associated with Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli, but the more recent field situation in turkeys is specifically associated with Clostridium spp. The prevalence of cellulitis is relatively low; however, the disease can be devastating in the individual flocks affected. [Position and sudden death of the infant].

In western countries, the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of mortality in infants under one year of age. In an official statement on prevention from the French Ministry of Health, sleeping in the supine position or on the side is recommended for all infants unaffected by a particular medical condition. This clear restrictive recommendation is based on valid epidemiological data but raises questions in the minds of paediatricians and general practitioners since the most recent recommendations for treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux indicate that the prone position at
