AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the risk of local recurrence and survival in patients with osteosarcoma based on the proximity of the tumour to the major vessels.

BACKGROUND: Radical resection of bone tumours localized in the meta- or diaphysis of long bones frequently results in segmental defects. Several stabilization techniques with preservation of the adjacent joint have been published, but the failure rate appears to be considerable. The objective of this study is the experimental and clinical testing of a new technique which combines unreamed nailing with support of the defect by a porous polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) spacer.

Between 1987 and 1991, 20 large proximal femoral replacements were performed in 19 patients (10 males and 9 females). The median age was 60 years (15 to 89 years). We report 3 patients referred to the bone clinic after spinal fractures. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry showed severe osteoporosis. Each patient was found to have a history of prostatic carcinoma and long-term treatment with goserelin. We suggest that all patients who have received androgen deprivation therapy for more than 1 year should be evaluated by bone densitometry.

The computed tomographic (CT) scans and medical records of 35 patients with proven benign soft-tissue masses of the extremities were reviewed to assess the contribution of CT in the evaluation of such masses.
