Continuous Pericapsular Nerve Group Block for Hip Surgery: A Case Series.

The pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block targets articular branches of the obturator, accessory obturator, and femoral nerves. This block has mostly been used to reduce pain caused by hip fractures. A catheter inserted in the plane between the iliopsoas muscle and iliopubic eminence can extend the analgesic duration. We describe the use of this block for successful pain relief of 10 patients with hip fracture (intertrochanteric, subtrochanteric, neck of femur) scheduled for surgery and continuing analgesia in the postoperative period with a catheter inserted in the musculofascial plane as des

Collar-type osteophyte of the femur in young adults: is it a harbinger of intra-articular osteoid osteoma?

Variable clinical and radiological findings for intra-articular osteoid osteoma (OO) of the hip joint make its diagnosis difficult. Because radiographs commonly do not identify the nidus, MR imaging becomes the second line of study. However, because the appearance varies, findings on MR images can be confusing. We found "collar type osteophyte" of the femur i.e. an osteophyte rim around the femoral neck, to be a conspicuous finding of intra-articular OO. Here, this feature will be emphasized and intra-articular OOs will be discussed, with a review of the literature.

[The osteoporosis disease in menopausal women. Physiopathology and therapeutic impact].

Trabecular osteoporosis of spongy bone expresses itself clinically by spontaneous vertebral compression and fractures of the lower end of the radius. Its prevention relies on calcium therapy, physical exercise, vitamin D, and, in women, oestrogens. The most effective curative treatment relies on fluorine, at a dose of 40-60 mg sodium fluoride, in conjunction with calcium equivalent to 1 g element (not the calcium salt). Small doses of vitamin D are used. The treatment is without effect on cortical osteoporosis and thus cannot prevent fractures of the neck of the femur.

Skeletal effects of combined bisphosphonates treatment and parathyroidectomy in osteoporotic patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

INTRODUCTION: Bone loss caused by primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is an indication for parathyroidectomy (PTX). However, whether adding b … increased after 1 year of treatment in both groups (all p < 0.001), and the increase in BMD at the femur neck was higher in the PTX alone group than in the combination group (p = 0.011). There was a decreasing trend in serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels in PTX alone compared to the combination treatment group (p = 0.053). In the study cohort, lower BMD …

The impact of glucocorticoid replacement on bone mineral density in patients with hypopituitarism before and after 2 years of growth hormone replacement therapy.

CONTEXT: Patients with hypopituitarism have reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this stud … seline did not differ between GC-sufficient and -insufficient patients, neither at lumbar spine nor femur neck. After 2 years on GH replacement, BMD increased in both groups. After adjustment for weight, age, gender, free T4 concentrations, change in IGF-I levels, and sex hormone treatment, GC sufficiency was associated with a greater increase in BMD at the …

Four year nutritional follow up after living related small bowel transplantation between monozygotic twins.

While small bowel transplantation (SBTX) may allow parenteral nutrition independence in the case of short bowel syndrome, its effects on body composition and growth are unclear. For the first time, a paediatric living related SBTX was performed between monozygotic twins. This case report describes their four year nutritional follow up. The 13 year old recipient and his healthy brother underwent measurements of body composition by 50 kHz bioimpedance analysis and bone mineral density of the femoral neck and total femur by dual energy x ray absorptiometry. Xylose tests and measurements of faecal

A cruciate ligament injury produces considerable, permanent osteoporosis in the affected knee.

Bone mineral density (BMD) and clinical status of 42 patients treated surgically 10-11 years earlier for an acute knee ligament injury were determined. The BMD was measured at the spine (L2-4) and the femoral neck, distal femur, patella, proximal tibia, and calcaneus of both lower extremities using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometric (DXA) scanner. The relative BMD results of the injured knee were correlated with sex, age, activity level, knee stability, and functional scores of the patient. In the 11 patients with moderate injury (isolated rupture of the medial collateral ligament), the BMDs of

Association between conicity index and osteoporosis/femoral bone mineral density in USA adults : a cross-sectional study based on evidence from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005 to 2020).

AIMS: Osteoporosis poses a substantial public health burden. The conicity index (C-index), which integrates waist circumference, weight, and height, is a validated measure of abdominal obesity. However, its association with osteoporosis and femoral bone mineral density (BMD) remains unclear. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 16,218 USA adults (aged ≥ 20 years) in the 2005 to 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Associations between C-index and osteoporosis were assessed by weighted multivariable logistic regression, while associations between C-index and femora

Association between mild depressive symptoms and annual changes in bone mineral density among South Korean women: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with various physical conditions, including bone metabolism. Most previous studies were cross-sectional, and longitudinal findings regarding osteoporosis or fracture risk remain inconsistent. This study examined the association between mild depressive symptoms and annual changes in bone mineral density (BMD) among women undergoing repeated dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1,629 women aged ≥20 years who completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and underwent at least two DEXA scans between 2017 and 202

Effect of three cannulated compression screws combined with an obstructing screw on the biomechanical performance of pauwels type III femoral neck fractures: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obstructing screws (OS) are an effective surgical method for treating Pauwels type III femoral neck fractures. This study compared the mechanical properties of various surgical techniques for treating such fractures using finite element analysis. METHODS: An ideal finite element model of the femur was established based on computed tomography scans of healthy individuals. Four internal fixation methods were designed: the three cannulated compression screws (3CCS) group, 3CCS + horizontal screw (3CCS + HS) group, 3CCS + OS (3CCS + OS) group, and 3CCS + medial buttress locking plate

Sexual orientation-based disparities in bone health: Evidence of reduced bone mineral density and mineral content among sexual minority men but not women in multiple NHANES waves.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority (SM) people experience significant stress associated with stigma, contributing to a higher rate of adverse health outcomes. Several known factors (eg, smoking) elevate risk of poor bone health, but to date little research has examined disparities in bone health among SM people. To address this, we analyzed sexual orientation differences in an available bone mineral density (BMD) cross-sectional dataset assessed via dual X-ray absorptiometry. METHODS: We combined the 2007 to 2008, 2009 to 2010, and 2013 to 2014 cycles of US National Health and Nutrition Examinatio

Biological sex variation in bone mineral density in the cranium and femur.

OBJECTIVES: Sex and age trends in bone mineral density (BMD) play an important role in the estimation of age-at-death (AAD) of unidentified human remains. Current methodologies lack the ability to precisely estimate age in older individuals. In this study, BMD of the cranium and femur measured by DXA were examined to establish their applicability for age estimation in older adults. BMD as measured by DXA, is most commonly used clinically for prediction of osteoporotic fracture risk. We hypothesized that weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing bones, the femur and cranium, respectively, would pro
