Protection of articular cartilage from degeneration by injection of transforming growth factor-beta in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effect of injection of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) on articular cartilage in osteoarthritic temporomandibular joint (TMJ). STUDY DESIGN: Disc perforation was performed bilaterally in 24 rabbits to induce osteoarthritis (OA). The right joint was injected with TGF-beta as experimental groups, and the left joint with physiologic saline as control. Animals were killed at different intervals. Histology and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was performed for comparison. RESULTS: All joints showed OA-like changes, but the degre

Calcification in the ovine intervertebral disc: a model of hydroxyapatite deposition disease.

The study design included a multidisciplinary examination of the mineral phase of ovine intervertebral disc calcifications. The objective of the study was to investigate the mineral phase and its mechanisms of formation/association with degeneration in a naturally occurring animal model of disc calcification. The aetiology of dystrophic disc calcification in adult humans is unknown, but occurs as a well-described clinical disorder with hydroxyapatite as the single mineral phase. Comparable but age-related pathology in the sheep could serve as a model for the human disorder. Lumbar intervertebr

Hockey injuries: a pediatric sport update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ice hockey is a fast-paced sport played by an increasing number of children and teens across the nation. RECENT FINDINGS: The risk of injury in youth hockey is high due to contact from body checking. Youth hockey programs need to educate players, coaches, and parents about the importance of knowing and following the rules as well as the dangers of body checking another player from behind. SUMMARY: In this article, we will present an overview of the types and rates of injuries that occur in ice hockey and then present a detailed review of hip/groin injuries that are commonl

Gait abnormalities and inflammatory cytokines in an autologous nucleus pulposus model of radiculopathy.

STUDY DESIGN: The authors investigated gait abnormalities and mechanical hypersensitivity associated with invertebral disc herniation in a rat model of radiculopathy. Further evaluation involved assessing how nucleus pulposus (NP) injury affected systemic cytokine expression and molecular changes at the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to describe the gait and behavioral changes in an animal model of disc-herniation induced radiculopathy. A second objective included examining how these functional changes correlated with neuroinflammation and autoreactive l

[Stabilization of the Distal Radioulnar Joint According to Adams: Clinical, and Radiological Results].

BACKGROUND: Stabilization of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) with reconstruction of distal radioulnar ligaments as outlined by Adams is indicated if a refixation of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is no longer possible. There is little information given on the results of these procedures in literature. PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze with use of objective and subjective criteria, whether the reconstruction of the radioulnar ligaments according to Adams allows a sufficient re-stabilization of the DRUJ. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 14 patients (9 female…

Alendronate alters mineral composition and has potential to restore enthesis strength without preventing trabecular bone loss during unloading of the supraspinatus enthesis.

Prolonged unloading of the shoulder, most seen after stroke related hemiparesis, accelerates degeneration of the supraspinatus enthesis in p … nt trabecular deterioration, including reduced bone volume fraction and trabecular thickness, while fibrocartilage morphology and tendon area remained unchanged. Alendronate did not prevent structural bone loss, though it produced clear compositional changes such as increased carbonate substitution. Mineral to matrix ratio, crystallinity, and phosphate peak posi …
