What we know and don't know about dietary fluoride supplements--the research basis.

The administration of dietary fluoride supplements has been shown unequivocally to be an effective procedure for preventing dental caries, approaching and sometimes exceeding the benefits generally expected from the consumption of fluoridated water. The latter, however, is far more economical and feasible for benefiting large numbers of children. Prescribing supplements is still recommended for children drinking water with suboptimal amounts of natural fluoride. There is a need to clarify the role of prenatal fluoride administration. As there is uncertainty about the optimal time to initiate f

Effect of topical application of stannous fluoride, stannous chloride and stannous tartrate on rat caries.

Topical application of 10 mM aqueous solutions of stannous fluoride inhibited caries in rats to a higher degree than 20 mM sodium fluoride, although the difference was not statistically significant. Furthermore, stannous fluoride reduced the number of Strep. mutans in plaque significantly; stannous ions have an antibacterial effect. Stannous chloride and stannous tartrate did not reduce caries in the rats, probably because of the low concentrations of available stannous ions in these solutions at low pH. The high concentration of stannous ions in solutions of stannous fluoride is probably part

[Intestinal absorption of radiocalcium after long-term treatment with sodium fluoride in senile osteoporpsis].

Prolonged administration of sodium fluoride (NaF) in patients suffering from osteoporosis or Paget's disease leads to a positive calcium balance together with positivization of the calcium balance may mean an ins, intestinal absorption of calcium was evaluated directly with the oral rrotic patients; 6 months treatment with NaF led to a significant imprt is difficult to say how this finding is connected with the drug's actide apatite crystals; the crystals' greater stability probably leads to greater resistance of fluorated bone to the action of parathormone, thus bring on hypocalcaemia which h

Cost-Effectiveness of Population-Level Fluoride Policies: A Systematic Review of Health and Economic Outcomes.

National Health Policies have adopted fluoridation-based programmes for the prevention of dental caries in many communities. Assessing their economic value across different settings is important for informing health policy and optimising resource allocation. To synthesise evidence of the economic efficiency of population-level public health interventions that use fluoride to prevent dental caries, compared with no fluoride policy or with alternative dental preventive interventions. Five electronic databases (PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, Embase, Global Health and EconLit) were searched for…

A mixed methods evaluation of the implementation of silver diamine fluoride in NHS primary dental care.

BACKGROUND: The rates of dental caries in young children in England are high. Despite evidence-based guidance being available to manage dental caries for young children, this is not routinely implemented. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) offers an alternative approach to caries management. However, its use in England is limited and there are no data on the implementation of SDF in NHS primary care, where most children are treated. AIM: Explore the factors affecting the ability to implement SDF and specifically the acceptability and feasibility of treatment with SDF from the perspectives of child

Enantioselective synthesis of sulfondiimidoyl fluorides via pyridine-N-oxide-catalyzed sulfondiimidoyl transfer.

Sulfondiimidoyl fluorides are valuable chiral SuFEx connectors, yet their catalytic asymmetric synthesis is challenging due to poor discrimination between two similar sulfilimino groups. Herein, we disclose a highly efficient catalytic asymmetric synthesis via pyridine-N-oxide-catalyzed sulfondiimidoyl transfer. From racemic sulfinamidines, in situ chlorination affords the sulfondiimidoyl chlorides, which undergo asymmetric Cl-F exchange promoted by chiral ArPNO C4 using TMAF as the fluoride source, delivering products in up to 90% yield and 92% ee. Mechanistic studies support a covalent activ

Carbamoyl fluorides as serine hydrolase inhibitors: a case study on FphI from Staphylococcus aureus.

Selective covalent inhibitors have recently gained popularity as potent therapeutic drugs or molecular tools to investigate protein function. Serine hydrolases are a particular class of enzymes involved in diverse diseases. They possess a nucleophilic catalytic serine residue which can be targeted by covalent warheads. Carbamoyl fluoride is a relatively underexplored and underutilized organofluorine warhead. Here, we have designed and screened a focused library of carbamoyl fluoride fragments that successfully inhibited a recently discovered biofilm-associated serine hydrolase, FphI, from the

In situ Generation of Fluoride Catalysts for CO2-to-Formic Acid Conversion With Silicon Reducing Agent.

The activation and catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) using silicon-based reducing agents is an important strategy for sustainable C1 chemistry and silicon waste upcycling. Tetraalkylammonium fluoride salts are highly effective promoters of silicon hydride formation; however, their direct use introduces challenges in terms of expense and handling. Here, we report the first example of in situ generation of fluoride catalysts for the reduction of CO2 to formic acid from a simple inorganic fluoride salt, such as NaF. A neutral precursor releases fluoride under mild conditions, enabling s

Prediction of fluoride contamination in groundwater of Nigeria using a weighted ensemble machine-learning framework.

Fluoride (F-) contamination of groundwater remains a significant health risk in Nigeria, affecting rural and urban communities. This study examines the spatial distribution and factors influencing F- levels using a weighted ensemble machine learning model to forecast high-risk areas and estimate exposed populations. The primary factor controlling geogenic F- is the aquifer lithology, with the highest F- levels found in groundwater from crystalline basement complexes and sedimentary sandstones. The problem is exacerbated in dry regions, including semiarid and arid zones, where evaporation rates

Placental Methylation Profile in Women Exposed to Fluoride and Its Association with Kidney Volume at Birth.

KEY POINTS: Placental DNA methylation patterns were associated with neonatal kidney volume in a population with high fluoride exposure. Newborns with high fluoride exposure and low kidney volume showed methylation changes in genes involved in kidney development pathways. These placental epigenetic patterns revealed early markers of altered kidney development, potentially linked to reduced nephron endowment. BACKGROUND: Mexico has a high burden of CKD. The state of Aguascalientes is among the regions with the highest reported prevalence of ESKD worldwide. In this setting, CKD of unknown etiolo

Physiochemical Analysis of Fluoride Availability and pH in Moroccan Mouthwashes: Clinical Implications for Enamel Safety.

OBJECTIVE: Fluoride mouthwashes are essential tools for caries prevention; however, their efficacy and safety depend on accurate fluoride concentrations and non-erosive pH levels. Deviations from labeled specifications can compromise therapeutic outcomes or pose risks to dental enamel. The aim was to quantify the available fluoride concentration and evaluate the pH of commercially available mouthwashes in Morocco, benchmarking them against international ISO standards and clinical safety thresholds. METHODS: Twenty commercially available mouthwashes were collected from Moroccan pharmacies and
