Impact of Climate Change-Induced Flooding Water Related Diseases and Malnutrition in Borno State, Nigeria: A Public Health Crisis.

Climate change-induced flooding has caused public health crises in Borno State, Nigeria, which influence the increase of waterborne diseases and malnutrition. Flooding disrupts water and sanitation systems, creating breeding grounds for waterborne diseases such as cholera, malaria, and diarrheal illnesses. The displacement of communities and destruction of agricultural infrastructure due to flooding further increase food insecurity, leading to malnutrition. This paper examines the interplay between flooding, waterborne diseases, and malnutrition in Borno State, highlighting the urgent need for…

COVID-19 Emergency Reforms in Massachusetts to Support Behavioral Health Care and Reduce Mortality of People With Serious Mental Illness.

People with serious mental illness are at disproportionate risk of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality because of high rates of risk factors that directly parallel those related to poor coronavirus outcomes, including smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, along with housing instability, homelessness, food insecurity, and poverty. Community-based behavioral health organizations are also at risk of adverse outcomes because of dramatic declines in revenues and a diminished workforce. The State of Massachusetts has responded to this crisis by rapidly im…

Relationships Among Adherence and Physical and Mental Health Among Women Living with HIV in Rural India.

We conducted a cross-sectional examination of the physical and psychological factors related to ART adherence among a sample of 400 women living with HIV/AIDS in rural India. Interviewer-administered measures assessed adherence, internalized stigma, depressive symptoms, quality of life, food insecurity, health history and sociodemographic information. CD4 counts were measured using blood collected at screening. Findings revealed that adherence to ART was generally low, with 94% of women taking 50% or less of prescribed medication in past month. Multivariate analyses showed a non-linear associa…

Reaching for a Healthier Lifestyle: A Photovoice Investigation of Healthy Living in People with Serious Mental Illness.

BACKGROUND: People with mental illness in the United States are almost twice as likely to be obese compared with those without a mental illn … s. CONCLUSIONS: Co-researchers highlighted structural barriers that were a cause or consequence of food insecurity and situations that threaten the right to healthy food and opportunities for a healthy life. Co-researchers reported examples of knowledge and skills they learned through participation in the project that were used to overcome structural barriers to …

Green Microbiology for Planetary Resilience: A Research Agenda for Microbial Sustainability Science.

The planet is facing a crisis occasioned by climate change, biodiversity loss, physical, chemical, and biological soil degradation, water insecurity and pollution, infectious disease crises, and unsustainable production systems and vulnerable food systems. These problems are deeply interconnected and share a common solution: microbial science. Microbes are central to maintaining or restoring water safety and quality, the carbon and nitrogen cycles responsible for maintaining and improving soil quality and fertility, plant productivity and immunity from pests and diseases, animal and human heal

Assessing Cassava Flour Consumption Impact on Iodine Nutritional Status in Schoolchildren from Public Schools in Brazil.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important food source in many developing countries. This root contains cyanoglucosides, which can aggravate iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs). To analyze the impact of cassava flour consumption (CFC) on urinary iodine concentration (UIC) among schoolchildren from public schools in Bahia, Brazil. Cross-sectional study was conducted on 1231 schoolchildren (ages 6-14 years old). Anthropometric parameters, household food insecurity, UIC, and CFC were evaluated. CFC prevalence was 90.8%. The mean UIC indicated adequate iodine nutrition in group A (CFC posit…

Early-life stress and the development of obesity and insulin resistance in juvenile bonnet macaques.

Stress is a risk factor for chronic illnesses such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension and has been postulated to cause the metabolic syndrome via perturbation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In our model of early-life stress (variable foraging demand [VFD]), food insecurity is imposed on monkey mothers for 16 weeks beginning when their nursing offspring are 3-5 months of age. Under VFD, food availability is never restricted, and the infant's growth is unaffected. VFD rearing does, however, cause a range of neurobiological abnormalities, including dysregulation of th…

Health and nutrition in children under 2 years of age in three areas of the Russian Federation.

The study objectives were to determine the nutritional status of children under 2 years of age in selected areas of the Russian Federation, … However, other survey results indicating high morbidity, low immunization rates, the possibility of food insecurity, and poor infant-feeding practices imply that children's health could easily deteriorate. Therefore, food security and children's nutrition should be monitored to avoid serious consequences in the future. The results also show that there is ample sc …

Efficacy of Management and Monitoring Methods to Prevent Post-Harvest Losses Caused by Rodents.

The presence of pest rodents around food production and storage sites is one of many underlying problems contributing to food contamination and loss, particularly influencing food and nutrition security in low-income countries. By reducing both pre- and post-harvest losses by rodents, millions of food-insecure people would benefit. As there are limited quantitative data on post-harvest rice losses due to rodents, our objectives were to assess stored rice losses in local households from eight rural communities and two rice milling factories in Bangladesh and to monitor the effect of different r

Comparative study of innovative blends prepared by fortification of date powder to alleviate child malnutrition.

Child malnutrition is one of the biggest problems in developing countries with higher level of food insecurity. Pakistan is 5th largest producer of date fruit; therefore, its processing and products should be explored in various dimensions. Being rich source of minerals and sugars, it can contribute in weaning foods in a good manner. In current study, three blends were prepared with specific proportions of spray-dried date powder and rich in specific proportions. They were compared with each other and control (free of date powder). The nutritional profile of the formulations revealed that 100 …

Effective interventions to address maternal and child malnutrition: an update of the evidence.

Malnutrition-consisting of undernutrition, overweight and obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies-continues to afflict millions of women and children, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Since the 2013 Lancet Series on maternal and child nutrition, evidence on the ten recommended interventions has increased, along with evidence of newer interventions. Evidence on the effectiveness of antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation in reducing the risk of stillbirths, low birthweight, and babies born small-for-gestational age has strengthened. Evidence continues to

Malnutrition and health in developing countries.

Malnutrition, with its 2 constituents of protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, continues to be a major health burden in developing countries. It is globally the most important risk factor for illness and death, with hundreds of millions of pregnant women and young children particularly affected. Apart from marasmus and kwashiorkor (the 2 forms of protein- energy malnutrition), deficiencies in iron, iodine, vitamin A and zinc are the main manifestations of malnutrition in developing countries. In these communities, a high prevalence of poor diet and infectious disease regu

Economic insecurity, access to menstrual materials, and sexual coercion: a qualitative study among adolescent schoolgirls in Ibadan, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is a critical but often overlooked component of adolescent girls’ health. Limited access to financial resources for purchasing menstrual materials is a key barrier to adequate MHM. Few studies have examined how adolescent girls obtain materials, how economic insecurity may affect MHM, and whether this promotes reliance on male partners for financial means to purchase materials. Prior research has linked dependence on male partners for basic needs like food with increased risk of sexual coercion, yet little is known about whether dependence on male
