Reducing umbilical catheter migration rates by using a novel securement device.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effectiveness of a novel device, LifeBubble, in reducing umbilical cord catheter (UC) migration and associated complications in neonates. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review was performed at Oregon Health & Science University's NICU (2019-2021) to compare standard adhesive securement with LifeBubble. The primary outcomes were UC migration, discontinuation due to malposition, and CLABSI incidence. Differences between groups were statistically analyzed and logistic regression used to adjust for potential confounders. RESULTS: Among 118 neonates (57 LifeBubb

This case report details a rare case of contraceptive implant migration in a young woman. The migration was discovered three years post-insertion during a routine replacement visit. Despite the absence of pulmonary symptoms, a CT scan revealed the implant in the inferior lobe of the right lung. The patient was referred for further evaluation, but immediate surgical removal was deferred. This case report highlights the importance of healthcare providers recognising migration as a rare complication during implantation and suggests self-examination as a potential preventive strategy.

Bowel Perforation Caused by Biliary Stent Migration After ERCP: A Systematic Review.

GOALS: This systematic review aims to evaluate the risk factors, clinical features, and outcomes of bowel perforation caused by stent migration after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). BACKGROUND: Distal migration of biliary stents can occur after ERCP. Upon migration, most stents pass through the intestine without adverse events; however, bowel perforation has been reported. STUDY: A comprehensive literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases was conducted through October 2023 for articles that reported bowel perforation because of stent migration. Cases of

Cephalad Migration of Spinal Cord Stimulator Lead: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of neuromodulation, significant advances in technology and safety have been achieved. Despite these improvements, complications are frequently observed. Among these complications, lead migration has been reported as the most common, with significant cephalad displacement being among the rarest for this type. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 69-year-old woman with chronic low back pain that experienced lead migration from T8 to T3 during the trial period, leading to an unsuccessful trial. CONCLUSIONS: Although rare, drastic displacement in the cephalad di

ANTERIOR MIGRATION OF INTRAVITREAL FLUOCINOLONE ACETONIDE IMPLANTS: A CASE REPORT.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To describe management of anterior migration of a fluocinolone acetonide(FAc) intravitreal implant. METHODS: A retrospective case report. A 61-year-old man with diabetic macular edema and prior vitrectomy had anterior migration of a FAc implant. Anterior segment photos and optical coherence tomography were performed. RESULTS: Approximately 3 months after FAc implant was administered, it was noted to have migrated into the anterior chamber. Vision, intraocular pressure, and optical coherence tomography imaging initially remained stable, and no evidence of detectable cornea

Thulium laser to endoscopically manage a rectal erosion and intraluminal mesh migration after ventral rectopexy.

Rectal erosions after ventral rectopexy (VR) is an uncommon but challenging adverse event and can be associated with partial migration of the mesh into the intestinal cavity. Re-do surgery is difficult and often provides colostomy and/or anterior rectal resections. However, no alternative solutions are described in the available literature. An 82-year-old woman presented to our hospital for rectal erosion and intraluminal migration of the mesh placed at a 1-year laparoscopic VR. We performed an innovative totally endoscopic approach, using thulium laser and two endoscopes, that led to a succes

Anterior Chamber Migration of Ozurdex Implants.

We present patient characteristics and follow-up results of cases with anterior chamber dexamethasone implant migration. The common feature of all six presented cases was vitrectomized eyes. Four of the patients had sutured intraocular lens (IOL) implantation due to complicated cataract surgery, one had combined retinal detachment surgery with sutured IOL implantation, and one had vitrectomy for diabetic intravitreal hemorrhage cleaning and uncomplicated cataract surgery. Anterior chamber implant migration caused corneal edema in all cases and elevated intraocular pressure in three cases. In t

Intraperitoneal duodenal perforation secondary to early migration of biliary stent: closure with through-the-scope clip.

Endoscopic biliary stenting is a well-recognised method of palliation of malignant biliary obstruction. Distal stent migration causing duodenal perforation is an uncommon complication of this procedure and is usually delayed. Early stent migration resulting in duodenal perforation is extremely rare and can be easily overlooked. We present a case of stent migration and resultant intraperitoneal duodenal perforation that occurred 24 hours following plastic stent insertion for a malignant biliary stricture in a 63-year-old woman. The patient required emergent abdominal laparoscopy with the placem

The Effect of Coronal Alignment on Tibial Component Migration Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Cohort Study with Long-Term Radiostereometric Analysis Results.

BACKGROUND: Recent short-term studies of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have claimed improved clinical outcomes and implant survival when aiming to restore constitutional joint kinematics, as compared with neutral mechanical axis alignment. However, implant durability may be compromised when aligned in varus or valgus. With use of data pooled from 3 long-term radiostereometric analysis (RSA) studies, the aim of the present study was to assess the effects of coronal alignment on tibial component migration. METHODS: Coronal alignment parameters from full-leg radiographs were measured and the con

Size does matter: when a large plastic biliary stent ends up in the root of the mesentery.

Duodenal perforations due to biliary stenting migration, although rare, can occur. We report a unique case of duodenal perforation due to a large in length plastic stent with no (or marginal) migration, which ended up in the root of the mesentery, explaining the normal laboratory values and minimal imaging findings observed. Any clinical symptom during the postprocedural period should raise the suspicion of a major complication and prompt quick management decisions.

Seeing Floaters: A Case Report and Literature Review of Intraventricular Migration of Silicone Oil Tamponade Material for Retinal Detachment.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular injection of silicone oil is commonly performed during vitrectomy to tamponade the retina in place for treatment of retinal detachment. Although rare, this intravitreal silicone can migrate through the optic nerve and chiasm and enter the cerebral ventricles. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here we present a case report of a patient presenting with headache and intraventricular hyperdensities on a computed tomography (CT) scan, raising a concern for intraventricular hemorrhage. However, the intraventricular hyperdensities were in a nondependent location and moved to a new nondepende

Intra-Aortic Missile After Gunshot Wound to Chest: An Interesting Case of Traumatic Cardiac Injury.

Missile embolus to the heart, although uncommon, is one of the most challenging scenarios in trauma. We describe a 36-year-old man who presented with a gunshot wound to the left chest and a chest x-ray revealing a foreign body in the mediastinum. A median sternotomy was performed and an injury to the left ventricle was identified. After intraoperative echocardiography and fluoroscopy confirmed a foreign body in the aortic root, cardiopulmonary bypass was implemented. A bullet was retrieved from the noncoronary sinus of the aortic valve. Injuries to the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve and
