Single suture craniosynostosis: diagnosis and imaging.

Craniosynostosis, premature suture fusion, is one of the most common craniofacial anomalies affecting approximately 1 in 2,500 live births. Craniosynostosis is most commonly an isolated (nonsyndromic) condition with the sagittal suture being the most commonly affected suture. In this review we describe the range of isolated synostoses and show how these can lead to a variety of different morphological and functional abnormalities.

Combined transmandibular-zygomatic approach and infratemporal craniotomy for intracranial skull base tumors.

Large intracranial skull base tumors remain surgically treacherous lesions. The preauricular transzygomatic infratemporal approach to this area has rapidly gained popularity. This article presents modifications to this approach which improved visualization and access to the infratemporal fossa. The procedure increases visualization, minimizes brain retraction, and results in improved resection and outcome. Reconstruction is rapid and there are minimal functional and cosmetic deficits.

[Morphological analysis of the innervation zones in frontal-zygomatic-orbital-maxillary surgery on unfixed frozen anatomical material].

OBJECTIVE: To study the features of the innervation zones in frontal-zygomatic-orbital-maxillary surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 15 specimens: male specimens 33.3% (n=5) and female specimens 66.7% (n=10). A total of 30 sides were examined. Age of specimens ranged from 60 to 89 years (median 74.00). Facial index and state of dental arches were estimated. Layer-by-layer dissection and measurement of anatomical structures in frontal-zygomatic-orbital-maxillary region were performed on each side for subsequent statistical analysis and comparison of data. RESULTS: We identified

A Rare Case of Pyknodysostosis (Toulouse-Lautrec Syndrome): Dental Perspectives on Comprehensive Management.

Pyknodysostosis (PKND), also referred to as Toulouse-Lautrec Syndrome, is a rare autosomal recessive disorder marked by short limbs, short stature, and generalized bone sclerosis. The hallmark signs of this disorder include sclerosis of the terminal phalanges, persistent fontanelles, delayed suture closure, wormian bones, absence of frontal sinuses, obtuse mandibular gonial angle, and relative mandibular prognathism. This case report elucidates a 13-year-old boy presenting with systemic features such as short stature, frontal and parietal bossing, depressed nasal bridge, a beaked nose, hypopla

Experimental craniosynostosis in growing rabbits. The role of the periosteum.

Reports on the role of the periosteum in premature sutural synostosis have been contradictory. The present study summarizes a series of six experiments designed to clarify these previously conflicting findings. Twenty-five male New Zealand White rabbits were divided into six experimental groups. In four of the groups, methyl-2-cyanoacrylate was used to glue the frontal and parietal bones together and temporarily immobilize the coronal suture. In the other two groups, the sutures were not immobilized. Polyethylene was used to separate the cyanoacrylate from the periosteum in two of the groups.

Comparison of Craniofacial Morphology Following Single- Versus Multi-Segment Fronto-Orbital Advancement for Metopic Synostosis.

ObjectiveMetopic synostosis (MS) is commonly corrected using multi-segment fronto-orbital advancement (FOA), including the frontal bone and supraorbital bandeau. Although this technique reliably expands the anterior vault, it is associated with contour irregularities and bandeau step-offs. The single-segment FOA, utilizing a unified parietal bone flap, was developed with the goal of restoring a seamless frontal contour. This study compares morphologic outcomes between single-segment and multi-segment FOA in MS.DesignA retrospective review of 3-dimensional imaging of patients with MS who underw…

Modular guided tibial plateau-leveling osteotomy improves osteotomy centering accuracy compared to a freehand technique.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of a tibial plateau-leveling osteotomy (TPLO) using a modular guide (OssAbility) compared to the traditional freehand method. We hypothesized that guide use would improve TPLO centering and accuracy in the sagittal and frontal planes compared to freehand. Additionally, we hypothesized that surgeon experience would improve freehand unguided osteotomy accuracy but would not influence guided osteotomy accuracy. METHODS: A randomized controlled experimental study was conducted with 8 voluntarily recruited surgical trainees from 1 institution. Each performed 18 t

Lap belt-induced Iliac Wing Fracture Risk Curve Development for Female PMHS in Frontal Sled Tests.

PURPOSE: This study estimates the tolerance of the female pelvis iliac wing under lap belt loading in frontal impacts. With future autonomous vehicles relying on seatbelts as the primary restraint, understanding pelvic injury biomechanics is crucial. The goal was to investigate pelvis fracture patterns resulting from seat belt loading among female specimens in MCW series and develop injury risk curves (IRCs) for iliac bone fracture. METHODS: Twenty-seven postmortem human subject (PMHS) frontal sled tests were conducted using a spring-controlled seat system. Tests included small and obese fema

Anterior Pedicled Nasal Flap in Frontal Sinus Drill-Out Patients: A Randomised Controlled Pilot Study.

Background: The endoscopic modified Lothrop procedure (EMLP) is a common procedure performed in patients with frontal sinus pathology. While performing this procedure, large segments of bone are exposed, which may lead to the promotion of frontal sinus neo-ostium stenosis. Here we examine the peri-operative differences in time to achieve healing in patients where a mucosal flap is used to cover the exposed bone on one side of the neo-ostium. Design: A randomised pilot study with 12 patients undergoing EMLP surgery participated in this study. Methods: Patients were randomised to undergo a mucos
