Comparison of the feasibility and validity of a one-level and a two-level erector spinae plane block combined with general anesthesia for patients undergoing lumbar surgery.

BACKGROUND: Spinal surgery causes severe postoperative pain. An erector spinae plane (ESP) block can relieve postoperative pain, but the optimal blocking method has not been defined. The aim of this study is to compare the feasibility of a one-level and a two-level lumbar ESP block and their effect on intraoperative and postoperative analgesia in lumbar spinal surgery. METHODS: A total of 83 adult patients who were scheduled for posterior lumbar interbody fusion were randomly divided into two groups. Patients in Group I (n = 42) received an ultrasound-guided bilateral one-level ESP block with

Improving postoperative functional outcomes through timely physiotherapy referrals in acute care surgery patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgeries: a multidisciplinary quality improvement initiative at Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital, Qatar.

Recovery in postoperative patients involves multiple domains including physical, physiological, psychological, social and economic aspects. Immediate postoperative physiotherapy (PT) is crucial for promoting early recovery and reducing hospital stay, particularly after common general surgeries like laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and hernia repair. Despite its benefits, there is often a gap in the optimal delivery of PT services, as observed at Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital, where only 10.4% of postoperative patients were referred to PT. The project aimed to improve t

Postoperative Opioid Use Is Uncommon After Third- and Fourth-Generation Percutaneous Hallux Valgus Surgery: A Prospective Single-Surgeon Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Modern percutaneous hallux valgus surgery, including the minimally invasive chevron and Akin (MICA) technique, is considered to cause less pain than traditional methods because of reduced soft tissue morbidity. Nevertheless, opioids are often prescribed postoperatively. This study investigates whether mild to moderate analgesics (World Health Organization [WHO] level 1 and 2) are sufficient for pain control following modern percutaneous hallux valgus correction. METHODS: This prospective single-surgeon case series includes 125 consecutive feet that underwent MICA surgery between M

Association of Tarsometatarsal Joint Slippage With Distal Screw Removal After Third-Generation Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery: A Retrospective Controlled Study.

BackgroundFollowing Minimally Invasive Bunionectomy (MISB), some patients undergo the removal of hardware (ROH) due to medial-sided pain near the distal metatarsal screw site. Medial pain following MISB has been attributed to multiple factors, including hardware prominence, residual medial bony prominence, and construct-specific considerations. One potential radiographic finding observed postoperatively is medial translation of the first metatarsal base at the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint, referred to here as "TMT slippage." This study investigated the association between postoperative TMT slip
