Cardiology Support Utilization Patterns and Associated Barriers Across Northwestern Ontario.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre On-Call Cardiology Support Service serves a geographically vast region across Northwestern Ontario where cardiovascular disease is a major burden. The objective is to analyze service utilization patterns including locations, indications, interventions, and barriers. In this 6-month prospective study, cardiologists collected data via survey on calls from rural and remote providers. Descriptive statistics and Fisher's exact test were used. The Canadian Institute for Health Information's Rural Health Systems Model was used for interpretation. Two hu

Evaluation of Patients with Community-Acquired Pneumonia Caused by Zoonotic Pathogens in an Area with a High Density of Animal Farms.

Intensive animal farming could potentially lead to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Clinicians are at the forefront of detecting unusual diseases, but the lack of specificity of zoonotic disease symptoms makes this a challenging task. We evaluated patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) with known and unknown aetiology in an area with a high livestock density and a potential association with animal farms in the proximity. Between 2008 and 2009, a period coinciding with a large Q fever outbreak in the Netherlands, patients with CAP were tested for the presence of possible respiratory

Spatial patterns monitoring of road traffic injuries in Karachi metropolis.

This article aims to assess the pattern of road traffic injuries (RTIs) and fatalities in Karachi metropolis. Assessing the pattern of RTIs in Karachi at this juncture is important for many reasons. The rapid motorisation in the recent years due to the availability of credit has significantly increased the traffic volume of the city. Since then, the roads of Karachi have continuously developed at a rapid pace. This development has come with a high human loss, because the construction of multilevel flyovers, signal-free corridors and the resulting high-speed traffic ultimately increase the seve

Geographic distribution of live births and infant mortality from congenital anomalies in Brazil, 2012-2017.

In the 2010-2014 period, the mean prevalence of congenital anomalies (CA) in the world was estimated at 398/10,000 births. CA are an important cause of mortality, disability, and comorbidity. Thus, the present study aims to describe the geographical and temporal distributions of live births and infant mortality (IM) due CA (IM-CA) in Brazil, from 2012 to 2017. The data used in this study is available at the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The prevalence of CA at birth was 81.67/10,000 (95% CI 80.46-82.88), and the IM-CA rate was 27.97/10,000 (95% CI 27.95-28.0

Land cover and tsetse fly distributions in sub-Saharan Africa.

This study aims to provide trypanosomiasis-affected countries with standardized datasets and methodologies for mapping the habitat of the tsetse fly (Glossina spp., the disease vector) by customizing and integrating state-of-the-art land cover maps on different spatial scales. Using a combination of inductive and deductive approaches, land cover and fly distribution maps are analysed in a geographic information system (GIS) to estimate the suitability of different land cover units for the three groups (subgenera) of Glossina. All land cover datasets used for and produced by the study comply wi

Epidemiology of systemic lupus erythematosus in Latin America.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects several organs, causing significant morbidity and increased mortality. It's more frequent in young, fertile women and can appear in all ethnic groups. The worldwide prevalence report indicates that there are at least 5 million patients with SLE. Although this disease can be found in every geographic region, certain races are more affected, such as Afro-American, Hispanic, and Asian populations. Furthermore, most of the epidemiologic information comes from Europe or the USA. In Latin America, only a few countries ha

Spatial analysis of melioidosis distribution in a suburban area.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis is associated with soil. This study used a geographic information system (GIS) to determine the spatial distribution of clinical cases of melioidosis in the endemic suburban region of Townsville in Australia. A total of 65 cases over the period 1996-2008 were plotted using residential address. Two distinct groupings were found. One was around the base of a hill in the city centre and the other followed the old course of a major waterway in the region. Both groups (accounting for 43 of the 65 cases examined) are in areas expected to

Modeling transmission of avian influenza viruses at the human-animal-environment interface in Cuba.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing geographical spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) is of global concern due to the underlying zoonotic and pandemic potential of the virus and its economic impact. An integrated One Health model was developed to estimate the likelihood of Avian Influenza (AI) introduction and transmission in Cuba, which will help inform and strengthen risk-based surveillance activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spatial resolution used for the model was the smallest administrative district ("Consejo Popular"). The model was parameterised for transmission fr

Cholera in Kenya: A scoping review of current research, evidence gaps and future directions.

Cholera remains a major public health challenge in Kenya, driven by environmental pollution, poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, weak monitoring systems, and climate effects. While there have been improvements in studying the disease, testing, monitoring, and environmental checks, the spread continues, especially in informal settlements, rural areas, and refugee camps. This review looked at 106 peer-reviewed studies published between 1979 and 2024. It aimed to describe the scope, progress, and gaps in cholera research in Kenya. Five databases, including Google Scholar, Web o

Cholera surveillance time series in Africa between 2010 and 2023.

BACKGROUND: Cholera remains a significant public health challenge in Africa, where outbreaks routinely strain public health and healthcare systems. Cholera surveillance time series data could be used to inform the efficient distribution of resources like oral cholera vaccine (OCV) and emergency response personnel, spur research on the impacts of different cholera control activities, and investigate longer-term epidemiologic patterns in cholera dynamics in this region. However, public reporting of cholera surveillance data historically has been sporadic and often limited to outbreak periods, th

A surveillance model for sexually transmitted infections in India.

The strategy for prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in India is based on syndromic case management delivered through designated STI/reproductive tract infection (RTI) centers (DSRCs) situated in medical colleges, district hospitals, and STI-clinics of targeted interventions programs. Laboratory tests for enhanced syndromic management are available at some sites. To ensure country-level planning and effective local implementation of STI services, reliable and consistent epidemiologic information is required on the distribution of STI cases, rate and trends of newly

Routine Clinical Care Creatinine Data in Denmark - An Epidemiological Resource for Nationwide Population-Based Studies of Kidney Disease.

PURPOSE: Creatinine data are key in identifying acute and chronic kidney disease. In Denmark, routine clinical care creatinine data have been collected regionally in the Clinical Laboratory Information System Research Database (LABKA) since the 1990s and nationwide in the Register of Laboratory Results for Research (RLRR) since 2013. Here we describe the geographical coverage of the databases and characteristics of Danish individuals with creatinine tests. This information is pivotal for the design and interpretation of studies using these data to examine kidney disease epidemiology. PATIENTS
