The Effectiveness of an OPTIMAL Theory-Based Training Program on Throwing Skill Learning in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

AIMS: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is often associated with motor challenges, particularly deficits in object-control skills such as overarm throwing, catching, and kicking. According to the OPTIMAL theory, the combination of three factors of autonomy support, enhanced expectancy and external focus of attention, can provide optimal conditions for motor learning and performance. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a training program based on this theory on motor learning and performance of children with ASD. METHODS: In this randomized controll

Mental practice in chronic stroke: results of a randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mental practice (MP) of a particular motor skill has repeatedly been shown to activate the same musculature and neural areas as physical practice of the skill. Pilot study results suggest that a rehabilitation program incorporating MP of valued motor skills in chronic stroke patients provides sufficient repetitive practice to increase affected arm use and function. This Phase 2 study compared efficacy of a rehabilitation program incorporating MP of specific arm movements to a placebo condition using randomized controlled methods and an appropriate sample size. Method- T

Effectiveness of video-enhanced educational intervention for fluid management on knowledge, practice, and adherence among patients undergoing hemodialysis: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Fluid management remains a cornerstone of hemodialysis care; however, suboptimal adherence frequently precipitates life-threatening complications, including hypertension and cardiovascular morbidity. While educational interventions are essential to mitigate these risks, empirical evidence regarding the efficacy of video-enhanced instruction in this population remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a structured video-enhanced educational intervention on knowledge, practice, and fluid adherence among patients undergoing hemodialysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This

A national survey of current practice in the management of very low and extremely low birth weight infants: is there a role for national guidelines?

Substantial variation exists in the use of a number of post natal interventions and procedures between neonatal intensive care units. This study examined current practice in the management of commonly encountered problems in very low and extremely low birth weight infants in the eight regional units in Ireland, and was intended to determine whether support exists for the development of national practice guidelines. Ninety one percent of people surveyed returned a completed questionnaire, 76% of respondents believed it would be both worthwhile and practical to develop national practice guidelin

Practice Facilitation to Address Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care: A Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Unhealthy alcohol use (UAU) is the fourth most preventable cause of death in the US. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends that primary care clinicians routinely screen all adults 18 years and older for UAU; however, this preventive service is poorly implemented. OBJECTIVE: To determine if practice facilitation improved delivery of the recommended care for UAU compared to usual care. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This practice-level cluster randomized clinical trial was conducted across diverse and representative primary care practices throughout Virginia. A total

CIRSE Standards of Practice on Below-the-Knee Revascularisation.

The CIRSE Standards of Practice Committee established a writing group that was tasked with producing up-to-date recommendations for performing below-the-knee revascularisation, taking into account data on novel techniques, devices, and long-term outcomes that have emerged over the last decade. CIRSE Standards of Practice documents are not clinical practice guidelines or systematic reviews of the literature. This document is not intended to impose a standard of clinical patient care but recommends a reasonable approach to and best practices for performing below-the-knee revascularisation.

Effect of practice on the control of reach extent.

The control of reaches to targets that vary in distance involves a combination of anticipatory planning and feedback-based adjustments. However, it is not known if their contributions to the control of reach extent change with repetitive practice. This study investigated the effect of three days of practice on the control of reach extent. Right-hand dominant participants reached with either the non-dominant left arm or dominant right arm to six targets presented in two directions and three distances in a virtual environment. The effect of practice on planning and feedback-based adjustments to

Relationships between global motion and global form processing, practice, cognitive and visual processing in adults with dyslexia or visual discomfort.

The aim of the first of two experiments was to investigate the effect of practice on sensitivity to global motion and global form in a group of adults with dyslexia, a group of normal readers with visual discomfort, a group with dyslexia and visual discomfort, and a control group. In comparison to the control group, and regardless of the effect of practice, the group with dyslexia was significantly less sensitive to global motion. No differences in global motion sensitivity were found when individuals with dyslexia, with or without visual discomfort, were compared. The normal reading group wit

The treatment of oesophageal varices using a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube: considerations for nursing practice.

The Sengstaken-Blakemore tube is slowly becoming the least preferred method for the treatment of oesophageal varices, possibly due to the potential complications that are inherent in its placement. Nursing practice pertaining to the care of this patient group appears ad hoc and reliant on local knowledge and experience, as opposed to recognized evidence of best practice.

Serious infections in children: an incidence study in family practice.

BACKGROUND: Information on the incidence of serious infections in children in general practice is scarce. However, estimates on the incidence of disease are important for several reasons, for example to assess the burden of disease or as a basis of diagnostic research. We therefore estimated the incidence of serious infections in general practice in Belgium. METHODS: Intego is a morbidity registration network, in which 51 general practitioners continuously register all diagnoses and additional data in their electronic medical records. Serious infections were defined as pneumonia, sepsis, meni
