OBJECTIVES: Extremely low gestational age neonates with chronic lung disease requiring oxygen therapy frequently experience fluctuations in arterial oxygen saturation or intermittent hypoxia (IH). These infants are at risk for multi-organ developmental delay, reduced growth, and short stature. The growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) system, an important hormonal regulator of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, promotes neonatal growth and development. We tested the hypothesis that increasing episodes of IH delay neonatal growth by influencing the GH/IGF-I axis.

OBJECTIVE: Despite regular transfusion and desferrioxamine treatment, growth failure is commonly seen in adolescent children with beta-thalassaemia major. The growth failure has been thought to be due to GH resistance rather than GH deficiency. We investigated the effect of GH on short non-GH deficient children with beta-thalassaemia.
DESIGN: Recombinant human GH was given in a dose of 0.14 IU/kg/day subcutaneously in an open study.
PATIENTS: Fifteen prepubertal Chinese children with beta-thalassaemia major (ranging from 7.16 to 14.7 years in age) with height -1.5 SD or more below the popula

We evaluated growth hormone (GH) secretion and baseline serum free insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) levels in 12 poorly growing patients (5 males and 7 females; age 1.6-12.5 years, median 6.4) with renal hypophosphataemic rickets treated with 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3 plus inorganic oral phosphate salts. Eleven healthy normally growing children (6 males and 5 females; age 3.1-10.8 years, median 6.6) were studied as control group. All patients had a normal GH response (GH peak > or = 10 micrograms/l) to at least one provocative pharmacological stimulus (levodopa or insulin tolerance test),

Patients in the Kabi International Growth Study (KIGS) up to 1st January 1990 who had organic growth hormone deficiency (OGHD) were identified. They accounted for 21% of all patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Diagnostic categories within the OGHD group included septo-optic dysplasia, postnatal trauma, craniopharyngioma, other cranial tumours, and following acute leukaemia. Features at presentation and during the first year of hGH treatment were compared with those of children with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency (IGHD). Ninety prepubertal children with OGHD were selected for c

The growth hormone (GH) response to GH-releasing factor (GRF) was studied in 54 severely growth-retarded patients (-2.1 to -6.5 SD) aged from 5 to 20 years (32 males and 22 females), among whom 34 were prepubertal and 20 at early pubertal stages. The patients were also submitted to a standard evaluation of their GH secretion, consisting of at least two classical pharmacologic stimulation (CPS) tests, such as ornithine, arginine and/or insulin, and one study of the GH sleep secretion (SS). The results of the standard evaluation allowed to distinguish 5 groups: (I) endocrinologically normal (n =

This paper reviews the difficulties in diagnosing a true deficiency of growth hormone (GH), the long-term results of therapy, the Canadian experience in treating GH deficiency, including the contributions made by the Medical Research Council's Therapeutic Trial of Human Growth Hormone, and the occurrence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in recipients of GH therapy. It also speculates on potential alternatives to treatment with GH derived from human pituitaries.

Sotos' syndrome, or cerebral gigantism, is a disorder of growth regulation. Tumours have occasionally been reported in children with Sotos' syndrome, but it is uncertain whether this is a coincidence, or whether it is aetiologically related to the underlying disorder of growth. We report a 15 month old child with a paraspinal neuroblastoma and Sotos' syndrome and suggest that children with this condition may be at higher risk for developing tumours than the general population.

The insulin-like growth factor binding proteins are single chain polypeptides, that can bind insulin-like growth factors, but not insulin. They can serve as autocrine or paracrine regulators of the actions of insulin-like growth factor. The human granulosa cells produce insulin-like growth factor-II but not insulin-like growth factor-I, while the human theca cells produce insulin-like growth factor-I and II. BACKGROUND: Patients with autism spectrum disorder and developmental delay or encephalopathy rarely demonstrate no or negligible hair and nail growth, suggesting a biotin-responsive clinical disorder.
METHODS: A ten-year-old girl presented with features of autism spectrum disorder, isolated headaches, and episodes of headaches and limb shaking. Her medical history revealed that her hair and nails did not grow. Administration of biotin restored her nail and hair growth and improved intellectual ability and school performance. Her episodes of headaches, single limb shaking, and loss of consciou

BACKGROUND: Onychodystrophy includes diverse nail disorders that may impair function and quality of life. Because nails grow slowly, adjunctive therapies that promote nail growth are of increasing interest.
AIM: This review examines the evidence for minoxidil in nail growth and nail disorders and proposes a treatment algorithm for its adjunctive use in onychodystrophy.
METHOD: A structured search of PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted on December 10, 2025, using terms related to minoxidil and nails. Records were deduplicated, screened, and appraised by full-text review using the Oxford C

Two boys with congenital rubella and concomitant growth-hormone deficiency responded to human-growth-hormone replacement and have already (over a period of 18 mo) achieved a significant increase in height. The association of these two diagnoses requires recognition so that treatable endocrine disorders, which are becoming recognized more often in congenital rubella, are always positively excluded when affected children with inexplicable short stature are seen.

The insulin signaling pathway plays key roles in systemic growth. TBC1D7 has recently been identified as the third subunit of the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a negative regulator of cell growth. Here, we used Drosophila as a model system to dissect the physiological function of TBC1D7 in vivo. In mutants lacking TBC1D7, cell and organ growth were promoted, and TBC1D7 limited cell growth in a cell-nonautonomous and TSC-independent manner. TBC1D7 is specifically expressed in insulin-producing cells in the fly brain and regulated biosynthesis and release of insulin-like peptide 2, leading t

District-representative data are rarely collected in the surveys for identifying localised disparities in Bangladesh, and so district-level estimates of undernutrition indicators - stunting, wasting and underweight - have remained largely unexplored. This study aims to estimate district-level prevalence of these indicators by employing a multivariate Fay-Herriot (MFH) model which accounts for the underlying correlation among the undernutrition indicators. Direct estimates (DIR) of the target indicators and their variance-covariance matrices calculated from the 2019 Bangladesh Multiple Indicato

Two unrelated Mexican girls, aged 14 months and 6 years respectively, with Kaufman oculocerebrofacial syndrome, are reported. Both showed psychomotor retardation, microcephaly, blepharophimosis and delayed growth as the main features; the infant also presented preauricular tags and large clitoris. Comparative analysis with previous cases reveals a heterogeneous syndrome in which the micro-brachycephaly, the mongoloid slanted eyes with different anomalies, the micrognathia and the neonatal respiratory distress are the most typical characteristics of this mental retardation syndrome.

All mammals must suckle and swallow at birth, and subsequently chew and swallow solid foods, for optimal growth and health. These initially innate behaviors depend critically upon coordinated development of the mouth, tongue, pharynx, and larynx as well as the cranial nerves that control these structures. Disrupted suckling, feeding, and swallowing from birth onward-perinatal dysphagia-is often associated with several neurodevelopmental disorders that subsequently alter complex behaviors. Apparently, a broad range of neurodevelopmental pathologic mechanisms also target oropharyngeal and crania

Disorders of retinal vascular growth and function are responsible for vision loss in a variety of diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity and retinal artery or vein occlusion. Over the past decade, a new signaling pathway that controls retinal vascular development has emerged from the study of inherited disorders - in both humans and mice - that are characterized by retinal hypovascularization. This pathway utilizes a glial-derived extracellular ligand, Norrin, that acts on a transmembrane receptor, Frizzled4, a coreceptor, Lrp5, a

The osteochondrodysplasias are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by abnormal growth and remodeling of cartilage and bone, affecting from 2 to 4.7 per 10,000 individuals. Most osteochondrodysplasias are heritable and many have elaborate patterns of genetic transmission. Affected individuals generally require management by multidisciplinary teams of specialists. In this review, we divide the osteochondrodysplasias into groups based on their genetic relationships, including mutations in various types of collagen, fibroblast growth factor, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein, parath
