Experimental osteogenesis with demineralized allogeneic bone matrix in extraskeletal sites.

Male albino rats were used to study the osteogenic potential of demineralized allogeneic bone matrix (DABM) grafts, in different stages of demineralization, placed in the anterior abdominal wall. The clinical evaluation, radiologic examination, calcium determination, and histologic (light and electron microscopic) studies showed that completely demineralized allogeneic bone matrix (CDABM) grafts were not rejected and that they stimulated new bone formation at the transplant sites. On the other hand, partially demineralized allogeneic bone matrix (PDABM) grafts were frequently rejected and show

Reconstruction of radial half hand by using combined transplantation of pedicled phalanx, free toe, and island flap.

Combined transplantation of 1) a residual proximal phalanx flap of the thumb with a fascial pedicle, 2) a reversed island flap based on the posterior interosseous artery, and 3) a free second toe was successfully used to reconstruct the radial half of the hand in a patient who had experienced loss of the second metacarpal bone and index finger, a defect to the shaft of the third metacarpal bone, and dry gangrene of the thumb, two-thirds of the radial dorsal skin and the first web space of the left hand. The reconstructive result was satisfactory and took advantage of each tissue flap. The oper

Deep Learning-Augmented Zero Echo Time MRI Increases Diagnostic Confidence for Osseous Assessment in Hand and Foot MRI Protocols.

Background/Objectives: This study assesses the outcomes of integrating deep learning-augmented zero echo time (ZTE DL) MRI sequences into standard MRI protocols for assessment of the hands and feet. Methods: In this single-center, retrospective study, a standard MRI protocol of hands and feet at 1.5 T was compared with the same protocol with an added ZTE DL sequence. Pathological changes in the bone, including subcortical sclerosis, osteophytes, joint space narrowing and fractures, were rated as present or absent. Indeterminate intraosseous lesions (erosions/ganglia) and indeterminate extraoss

Osteoblastoma of the Middle Phalanx of the Hand Initially Diagnosed as Melorheostosis.

Osteoblastoma of the hand is a rare tumor that is difficult to diagnose. We present a right-handed, 5-year-old boy who presented with pain and edema about the middle phalanx of the right long finger. He was initially diagnosed with melorheostosis and treated with observation then curettage and bone grafting. The patient experienced recurrence with pathology consistent with osteoblastoma, with this being the first report of osteoblastoma of the middle phalanx of the hand. He ultimately was treated with long finger ray amputation. Ray amputation of the long finger was a successful treatment in t

[Ollier's Disease Associated With Finger Agenesis At The Medical Clinic "Les Etoiles" In Bamako: A Case Report].

We report a case of Olier's disease associated with finger agenesis in order to study the contribution of radiography in its diagnosis. It was a 7-year-old boy with no pathological history. He was received at the Medical Clinic "Les Etoiles" in Bamako on 07/20/2023 for malformation assessment. Radiographic exploration of the hands and feet had objectified multiple enchondromatosis of the hands and right knee associated with agenesis of the phalanges of the 1st and 2nd rays of the right hand. The radiologist must consider this in the face of bone deformities occurring at a young age.

The aging hand.

Hand function decreases with age in both men and women, especially after the age of 65 years. A review is presented of anatomical and physiological changes in the aging hand. The age-related changes in prehension patterns (grip and pinch strength) and hand dexterity in the elderly population are considered. Deterioration in hand function in the elderly population is, to a large degree, secondary to age-related degenerative changes in the musculoskeletal, vascular, and nervous systems. Deterioration of hand function in elderly adults is a combination of local structural changes (joints, muscle,

Can fingernail quality predict bone damage in Type 2 diabetes mellitus? a pilot study.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) adversely affects the normal functioning, intrinsic material properties, and structural integrity of many tissues, including bone. It is well known that the clinical utility of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) is limited to assess bone strength in individuals with T2DM. Therefore, there is a need to explore new diagnostic techniques that can better assist and improve the accuracy of assessment of bone tissue quality. The present study investigated the link between bone and fingernail material/compositional properties in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). For that

A Novel Dual-Output Deep Learning Model Based on InceptionV3 for Radiographic Bone Age and Gender Assessment.

Hand-wrist radiographs are used in bone age prediction. Computer-assisted clinical decision support systems offer solutions to the limitations of the radiographic bone age assessment methods. In this study, a multi-output prediction model was designed to predict bone age and gender using digital hand-wrist radiographs. The InceptionV3 architecture was used as the backbone, and the model was trained and tested using the open-access dataset of 2017 RSNA Pediatric Bone Age Challenge. A total of 14,048 samples were divided to training, validation, and testing subsets with the ratio of 7:2:1, and a

Targeted Delivery of c(RGDfk)-Modified Liposomes to Bone Marrow Through In Vivo Hitchhiking Neutrophils for Multiple Myeloma Therapy.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a prevalent bone marrow disorder. The challenges in managing MM include selecting chemotherapy regimens that effectively modulate the myeloma microenvironment and delivering them to the bone marrow with high efficacy and minimal toxicity. Herein, a novel bone marrow targeting strategy using c(RGDfk) peptide-modified liposomes loaded with chemotherapeutics is developed, which can specifically recognize and hitchhike neutrophils following systemic administration, capitalizing on their natural aging process to facilitate precise drug delivery to the bone marrow, thus mini

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation: a review of seven cases.

BACKGROUND: Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) is a rare tumour-like condition mostly affecting the tubular bones of the hands and feet. Although it recurs in 50% of cases after local excision, it is a form of heterotopic ossification and its behaviour is otherwise benign. The present study describes seven cases of BPOP collected by the Bone Tumour Registry of New South Wales. METHODS: Clinical data, radiographs and histological specimens collected by the Bone Tumour Registry of New South Wales were examined, and further clinical data were sought from the referring doct

Primary biliary cirrhosis and bone changes.

Two cases of primary biliary cirrhosis with bone lesions are reported. In one case radiographic findings in the hands and right shoulder are found to be characteristic of primary biliary cirrhosis rather than other concomitant diseases present in the patient which are also susceptible to produce bone lesions. The second case is an example of less specific bone changes which may be attributed to primary biliary cirrhosis or other rheumatoid disease.

Hand osteoarthritis: clinical phenotypes, molecular mechanisms and disease management.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent condition, and the hand is the most commonly affected site. Patients with hand OA frequently report symptoms of pain, functional limitations and frustration in undertaking everyday activities. The condition presents clinically with changes to the bone, ligaments, cartilage and synovial tissue, which can be observed using radiography, ultrasonography or MRI. Hand OA is a heterogeneous disorder and is considered to be multifactorial in aetiology. This Review provides an overview of the epidemiology, presentation and burden of hand OA, including an update

Sequential changes of programmed cell death in developing fetal mouse limbs and its possible roles in limb morphogenesis.

Apoptotic cell death in the developing limb of mouse fetuses was examined sequentially on days 11-15 of gestation by means of Nile blue (NB) sulfate staining with special reference to its relation to limb morphogenesis. With some exceptions, programmed cell death (PCD) in the hand and foot was observed in the mesenchyme but not in the surface ectoderm. We found that during digital formation PCD begins at the proximal portion of the interdigital mesenchyme and subsequently expands distally. Therefore, the initial PCD that occurs in the interdigital zones may determine the proximal ends of digit
