Chasing the rainbow: pleasure, sex-based sociality and consumerism in navigating and exiting the Irish Chemsex scene.

Club drug use among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men is increasingly normalised within sexual contexts and is associated wi … ug use, motives to partake, the organisation of Chemsex parties and group connectivity, drugs used, harm reduction, pleasure and consequences of participation over time. Four basic themes emerged from the analysis: social and cyber arrangements within the Dublin Chemsex scene; poly drug use and experiences of drug dependence; drug and sexual harm reduction withi …

High willingness to use rapid fentanyl test strips among young adults who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic opioid overdose mortality among young adults has risen more than 300% in the USA since 2013, primarily due to the contamination of heroin and other drugs with illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Rapid test strips, which can be used to detect the presence of fentanyl in drug samples (before use) or urine (after use), may help inform people about their exposure risk. The purpose of this study was to determine whether young adults who use drugs were willing to use rapid test strips as a harm reduction intervention to prevent overdose. We hypothesized that those who had ever ove…

NGF gene polymorphisms are not associated with heroin dependence in a Taiwanese male population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Heroin dependence (HD) is a chronic relapsing brain illness with substantial heritability. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a crucial modulator in the neurodevelopment, and may be a key mediator of reward processes in HD. The purpose of this genetic study was to investigate whether NGF gene polymorphisms associate with the occurrence of HD and the specific personality traits of patients with HD. METHODS: We selected a homogeneous Han Chinese male population to overcome possible confounding effects of population and gender. For the study, 272 HD patients and 141 controls

Measuring improvement in knowledge of drug policy reforms following a police education program in Tijuana, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Mexico's 2009 "narcomenudeo reform" decriminalized small amounts of drugs, shifting some drug law enforcement to the states and mandating drug treatment diversion instead of incarceration. Data from Tijuana suggested limited implementation of this harm reduction-oriented policy. We studied whether a police education program (PEP) improved officers' drug and syringe policy knowledge, and aimed to identify participant characteristics associated with improvement of drug policy knowledge. METHODS: Pre- and post-training surveys were self-administered by municipal police officers to me…

HCV epidemiology in high-risk groups and the risk of reinfection.

Injecting risk behaviours among people who inject drugs (PWID) and high-risk sexual practices among men who have sex with men (MSM) are impo … n-going risk behaviour. Constructive strategies include acknowledgement, education and counselling, harm reduction optimization, scaled-up treatment including treatment of injecting networks, post-treatment screening, and rapid retreatment of reinfections.

Navigating the poverty of heroin addiction treatment and recovery opportunity in Kenya: access work, self-care and rationed expectations.

Drawing on the analyses of qualitative interview accounts of people who inject heroin in Kenya, we describe the narration of addiction treat … materialise and ration their care expectations. The use of rehab as a primary means of respite and harm reduction rather than recovery and the individuation of care in the absence of an enabling recovery environment are key characteristics of drug treatment experience. The recent incorporation of 'harm reduction' into policy discourses may trouble the primacy o …

Ontologically Challenging Psychedelic Experiences: Considerations for Managing Associated Distress.

Psychedelic substances have been increasingly recognised for their potential in treating various mental health conditions, yet they can also induce what we call ontologically challenging psychedelic experiences (OCPEs), a concept developed in our research to describe experiences that profoundly disrupt an individual's sense of self, reality, and existence. We present OCPEs not as a diagnostic category but as a phenomenological and harm reduction perspective on certain destabilising psychedelic experiences. While some individuals integrate OCPEs with ease, others struggle with ontological instab…

Exploring the Users' Perspective of the Nationwide Self-Exclusion Service for Gambling Disorder, "Spelpaus": Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Problem gambling and gambling disorder cause severe social, psychiatric, and financial consequences, and voluntary self-exclusion is a common harm reduction tool used by individuals with gambling problems. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore users' experience of a novel nationwide, multioperator gambling self-exclusion service, "Spelpaus," in Sweden and to inform stakeholders and policy makers in order to improve harm reduction tools against gambling problems. Expert recommendations for training peer workers to provide non-abstinent recovery support: A real-time Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: Peer workers-nonclinical service providers with lived experience of recovery-are a growing sector of the substance use workforce whose professional practices are intertwined with their own personal recovery pathways. While research has documented stigma toward harm reduction among peers and the ways peers' attitudes affect their interactions with clients, little is known about effective strategies to prepare peers to serve people in non-abstinent recovery. This study used Delphi methodology to develop expert recommendations for training peers to provide non-abstinent recovery sup…

Sharing drug checking results in a Canadian setting: a multi-site analysis.

BACKGROUND: Drug checking services (DCS) have been implemented as a harm reduction measure to address high rates of illicit drug morbidity and mortality. In addition to reducing individual-level risk, there is also potential for DCS users to increase community level awareness of drug market conditions through sharing of drug checking results. However, little is known about the patterns of information sharing among people who use DCS. METHODS: Data were derived from a cross-sectional study conducted at 22 community harm reduction sites offering DCS across British Columbia (BC) between March 20…

North Carolina pharmacists' willingness to sell fentanyl test strips: a survey study.

BACKGROUND: Although fentanyl test strips (FTS) can accurately determine the presence of fentanyl in unregulated substances, access to FTS remains limited. This study aimed to examine North Carolina community pharmacists' attitudes and willingness to engage in various behaviors related to FTS sales and distribution. METHODS: A convenience sample of community pharmacists completed an online survey that assessed: (1) comfort initiating an FTS conversation; (2) willingness to sell FTS, distribute FTS instructions, counsel on FTS, refer patients to harm reduction organizations, and advertise FTS;…

Declining rates of health problems associated with crack smoking during the expansion of crack pipe distribution in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Crack cocaine smoking is associated with an array of negative health consequences, including cuts and burns from unsafe pipes, and infectious diseases such as HIV. Despite the well-established and researched harm reduction programs for injection drug users, little is known regarding the potential for harm reduction programs targeting crack smoking to reduce health problems from crack smoking. In the wake of recent crack pipe distribution services expansion, we utilized data from long running cohort studies to estimate the impact of crack pipe distribution services on the rates of h…

A peer-drinking group motivational intervention among Thai male undergraduate students.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol consumption, particularly among young males, is an important global health problem, in part because of the increased risks of intentional and non-intentional injuries, uses of illicit drug, crime, and psychiatric disorders. There are no data available to evaluate the extent to which interventions are effective in reducing hazardous/harmful alcohol consumption among young males in Thailand. We examined the efficacy of alcohol harm reduction strategies administered as a peer-drinking group motivational intervention (PD-GMI) among Thai male undergraduates. METHODS: …
