Expression and functional analysis of platelet-derived growth factor in uterine leiomyomata.

Carotid artery stenting (CAS) with double-layer stents (DLS) has been increasingly adopted for carotid revascularization, particularly in patients considered high risk for surgery. However, evidence regarding their early clinical outcomes remains limited and heterogeneous. This systematic review aims to assess the 30-day safety outcomes of CAS using DLS, focusing on stroke, mortality, myocardial infarction (MI), and device-related complications. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, and Cochrane Library for studies published between January 2020

Cerebral Embolic Protection during Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation: Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

In patient undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), stroke remains a potentially devastating complication associated with significant morbidity, and mortality. To reduce the risk of stroke, cerebral protection devices (CPD) were developed to prevent debris from embolizing to the brain during TAVI. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the safety and efficacy of CPD in TAVI. The MEDLINE (PubMed, Ovid) and Cochrane databases were queried with various combinations of medical subject headings to identify relevant articles. Statistical analysis was perfor

Mobile phones and "inattention" injuries: the risk is real.

Mobile phones though indispensable have a flip side: in fact, they adversely affect our ergonomics and mobility. They share an etiologic burden on the changed profile of inattention injuries; and now have proven to be a necessary evil in the changing lifestyles. We aimed to evaluate the role of mobile phones as a causative factor in these head and neck injuries. We evaluated various injury statistics published throughout the world that attributed the concurrence of neurological injuries to portable handheld communication devices. We evaluated the dangers posed by simultaneous engagement on pho

Helmet use and associated spinal fractures in motorcycle crash victims.

BACKGROUND: The effect of helmet use on the incidence of cervical and thoracic fractures sustained in motorcycle crashes remains controversial. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the incidence of these fractures in helmeted and nonhelmeted crash victims at a single Level I trauma hospital with a well-defined system for evaluating spinal fractures. RESULTS: Of 422 motorcycle crash victims treated during 3 years, 190 had a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and 75 sustained some form of spinal fracture. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the statistical analysis, there was no relationship between helmet use a

A review of horse-related injuries in a rural Colorado hospital: implications for outreach education.

INTRODUCTION: The literature contains many studies on the types of injuries sustained in horseback riding incidents. Most advocate the use of equestrian helmets to prevent head trauma. However, information is limited on other specific prevention strategies. METHODS: A 4-year, retrospective, and prospective review of medical records pertaining to horse-related injuries in a southwestern Colorado hospital yielded a sample of 85 patients who had been injured while riding or tending to horses. In addition to the record review, patients were interviewed during ED discharge, inpatient treatment, or

The characteristics of all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related deaths: A forensic autopsy data-based study.

Using forensic autopsy-based data from a regional medical examiner office in the midwestern U.S. with a mixed small urban-rural population, we describe the characteristics of all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related deaths occurring between 2000 and 2018. During this period, there were 25 ATV-related deaths. There was a strong male predominance with 22 male and 3 female decedents. The average age at death was 35 years, with a range from 10 to 82 years, and a bimodal age distribution with one peak at 10-19 years old, and a second peak at 60-69 years old. The most common cause of death was blunt trauma

Helmets Matter: Kentucky Motorcycle Crash Victims Seen at a Tennessee Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVES: Motorcycle helmet laws vary by state, with Kentucky requiring helmets only for younger riders. We hypothesized that motorcyclists injured in Kentucky and seen at a Tennessee trauma center would be more likely to be unhelmeted, have more severe head injuries, and sustain more fatal injuries than those injured in Tennessee or Virginia. METHODS: A Trauma Registry review of 729 injured motorcyclists from January 2005 through June 2015 examined state location of crash, demographics, helmet use, and clinical outcomes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluated predictors for he

The epidemiology and hotspots of road traffic injuries in Moshi, Tanzania: An observational study.

Road traffic injuries (RTIs) continue to increase with the proliferation of motor vehicles, especially in low-income countries where safe road infrastructure is lacking. Knowing where and why RTIs occur would allow for increased safety and prevention planning. In this study, police records of 300 motor vehicle collisions which occurred between February 2013 and January 2014 in Moshi, Tanzania were reviewed. Analysis of variables including victim age, gender, type of collision, conditions, and use of safety equipment were analyzed. Geographic information system (GIS) analysis was performed to i

Safety factors related to all-terrain vehicle injuries in children.

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries are a significant source of pediatric trauma. We hypothesized that these injuries are caused by poor safety behavior. To test this hypothesis, we surveyed both injured and uninjured ATV riders. METHODS: A prospective convenience sample-based survey was initiated at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, a Level I pediatric trauma center. Patients with an ATV-related injury were asked to complete the survey for the study group (INJ), while uninjured pediatric ATV-riders completed the survey for the control group (UnINJ). Potential risk of using General Estimates System: bicycle safety.

Beneficial effects of bicycle helmet use have been reported mostly based on medical or survey data collected from hospitals. This study was to examine the validity of the United States General Estimates System (GES) database familiar to many transportation professionals for a beneficial effect of helmet use in reducing the severity of injury to bicyclists and found potential risk of erroneous conclusions that can be drawn by a narrowly focused study when the GES database is used. Although the focus of the study was on bicycle helmet use, its findings regarding potential risk might be true for
