Mass drug administration in Central Equatoria, South Sudan: results and suggestions for future distributions.

BACKGROUND: South Sudan has rolled out a neglected tropical disease programme, which envisaged deworming campaigns in states endemic for soil transmitted helminth infections and schistosomiasis. METHODS: In 2016, two deworming campaigns targeting school-age children were performed in Central Equatoria. Distribution sites were set up in primary schools, Boma Health Initiative headquarters, health centres and markets. Training, radio adverts and community meetings were performed before the campaigns. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Central Equatoria implemented the first helminth infections and schis

Comparison between merthiolate-iodine-formalin and Kato-Katz methods for the diagnosis of human helminth infections in resource-limited settings.

Diagnosis of intestinal parasites through examination of fresh faecal samples is hampered by its unpleasantness and the urgent need to detect all parasitic forms. In this paper, we compared the standard Kato-Katz (KK) technique with a traditional fixation method, the merthiolate-iodine-formalin (MIF) method. Two hundred and twenty-seven faecal samples from individuals living in a rural setting in Venezuela with high to moderate prevalences of Ascaris lumbricoides (Al), Trichuris trichiura (Tt) and hookworm infections were examined. The 'gold standard' used here was derived from the combination

Helminth infections among long-term-residents and settled immigrants in Qatar in the decade from 2005 to 2014: temporal trends and varying prevalence among subjects from different regional origins.

BACKGROUND: Travel and migration from developing regions, where tropical diseases are common, to more developed industrialised nations can contribute to the introduction and subsequent spread of infections. With its rapidly expanding economy, Qatar has attracted vast numbers of immigrant workers in the last two decades, often from countries with poor socio-economic levels. Many used to arrive with patent intestinal parasitic infections. METHODS: We analysed the prevalence of helminth infections in a dataset of 29,286 records of subjects referred for stool examination at the Hamad Medical Corp

Parasitic infections in travelers and immigrants: part II helminths and ectoparasites.

Travel and migration contribute to the emergence of certain parasites which may be imported into nonendemic areas. Noncontrolled importation of food products and animals may also contribute to the diagnosis of infections caused by helminths in nonendemic countries. Some helminth infections such as strongyloidiasis may be life-threatening, especially in immunocompromised patients, and outcome depends on correct diagnosis and treatment. Other helminth infections are neglected tropical diseases associated with chronic disease and/or disability. Major challenges concern the development of improved

[Common tropical infections with protozoans, worms and ectoparasites].

Infectious diseases of the skin have become rarer in industrialized nations, but they still affect a considerable part of the population in tropical regions. Skin diseases induced by protozoa, worms and ectoparasites are among the 17 "neglected tropical diseases" defined by the WHO (leishmaniasis, dracunculiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis). Skin symptoms in travellers returning from the tropics may challenge dermatologists in Germany regarding differential diagnostic assessment and therapy. Among the 12 most frequent skin diseases in travellers are cutaneous larva migrans, leishmani

The promise and pitfalls of mass drug administration to control intestinal helminth infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intestinal helminth infections continue to cause significant morbidity in resource-limited settings. Recent efforts at global control have centered on mass drug administration (MDA) of praziquantel and benzimidazole anthelminthics to reduce the prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted nematode infections, respectively. This review summarizes progress and potential challenges associated with MDA. RECENT FINDINGS: Data from studies conducted in endemic areas show that chemotherapeutic interventions can reduce prevalence and intensity of infection with

Spatial modelling of soil-transmitted helminth infections in Kenya: a disease control planning tool.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of control of parasitic diseases requires accurate, contemporary maps that provide intervention recommendations at policy-relevant spatial scales. To guide control of soil transmitted helminths (STHs), maps are required of the combined prevalence of infection, indicating where this prevalence exceeds an intervention threshold of 20%. Here we present a new approach for mapping the observed prevalence of STHs, using the example of Kenya in 2009. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Observed prevalence data for hookworm, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura were assembled for

A review of parasitic zoonoses in a changing Southeast Asia.

Parasitic zoonoses are common and widely distributed in the Southeast Asian region. However, the interactions between parasites, hosts and vectors are influenced by environmental, socio-cultural and livestock production changes that impact on the distribution, prevalence and severity of disease. In this review we provide an update on new knowledge in the context of ongoing changes for the food-borne pig associated zoonoses Taenia solium and Trichinella spp., the food-borne trematodes Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis, the water-borne trematodes Schistosoma spp., the vector-borne z

Soil-transmitted helminths of humans in Southeast Asia--towards integrated control.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) pose significant public health challenges in many countries of Southeast Asia (SEA). Overall, approximately one-third of the world's cases of ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm disease occur in the 11 major SEA countries. Various countries are at different stages in their response to controlling these diseases. For instance, in Malaysia and Thailand, the major burden of disease is confined to rural/remote, indigenous and/or refugee populations. In countries, such as Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam, the burden remains high, although e

The present status of human helminthic diseases in Iran.

Over the last few decades there have been several marked changes in the human helminthiases found in Iran. Fascioliasis is emerging as an important chronic disease of humans, especially in the northern province of Gilan (where outbreaks in 1989 and 1999 involved >7000 and >10,000 cases, respectively) and, more recently, in the western province of Kermanshah. In contrast, no cases of urinary schistosomiasis, a disease that once affected thousands of individuals in south-western Khuzestan province, have been reported in Iran in recent years, and no cases of dracunculiasis have been seen in the c

Ivermectin: uses and impact 20 years on.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ivermectin was first discovered and used in veterinary medicine over 20 years ago. This review highlights some of the recent published research from 2005 through June 2006 on the use of ivermectin in both helminth and arthropod infection. RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, several published studies have detailed the expanding role for ivermectin in multiple endo and ectoparasitic infections, including scabies, pediculosis, soil transmitted helminths, gnathostomiasis and myiasis. In addition, there is increasing experience with parenteral ivermectin for the treatment of disse

Perspectives in asthma: molecular use of microbial products in asthma prevention and treatment.

Asthma and atopy are characterized by T(H)2-type patterns of inflammation. The hygiene hypothesis suggests that early-life environmental exposure to microbes, other pathogens, and their products promotes innate immune responses that suppress atopy; the current epidemic of allergic disease may result from a dearth of such stimuli. Antiatopic responses engendered by these exposures include both T(H)1-type and regulatory-type patterns, the latter including mechanisms of antigen-presenting cells as well as those of lymphoid origin, and are characterized by prominent IL-10 and/or TGF-beta effects.

Current views on geographic distribution and modes of infection of neurohelminthic diseases.

Neurohelminthiases are more prevalent in geographic areas where environmental factors and poor sanitary conditions favor the parasitism between man and animals. In recent years, population shifts and rapid transport have facilitated the spread of certain helminthic diseases from endemic to non-endemic areas. Although many helminthic parasites are known to cause various human diseases afflicting many millions of people in the world, neurohelminthiases are often not diagnosed because they have been unrecognized by clinicians or confirmatory diagnostic tests are not easily available. Paragonimias

[Prevalence of intestinal parasitism in the public laboratories of Martinique: development from 1988 to 1995].

This survey drew up the epidemiological situation of intestinal parasitism in Martinique in 1994-1995. 13,978 stool specimens collected in 1994-1995 were tested by parasitologic examination. Stool specimens were from patients hospitalised in the 3 principal hospitals of Martinique or coming to the Laboratoire départemental d'hygiène. The parasitism rate was 8.73%. This study showed a significant reduction of intestinal parasitism between results of 1988 and results of 1994-1995. The oro-faecal parasitism was not very important that reflected the good economic and sanitation level of Martinique

Comparative trials using albendazole and mebendazole in the treatment of soil-transmitted helminths in schoolchildren on Penang, Malaysia.

Trials using albendazole and mebendazole, as single 400 mg dose treatments, against soil-transmitted helminths, were carried out in 7-9 and 10-12 years-old schoolchildren living in urban and rural environments in Penang, Malaysia. Both drugs were equally effective in treating trichuriasis and ascariasis in both age groups and environments. However, mebendazole is not so effective in the treatment for hookworms when compared to albendazole. It is suggested that albendazole should be considered the drug of choice for mass chemotherapy for Penang.
