OBJECTIVE: To study the trends in the prevalence of hepatitis B infections in the Netherlands on the basis of reported cases.
DESIGN: Retrospective, descriptive.
METHOD: Analysis of data collected from the obligatory notification of hepatitis B to the Dutch Public Health Services in the Netherlands in the period 2002-2005.
RESULTS: In the period from January 2002 to December 2005, 7352 hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections were reported, of which 1168 (16%) were acute and 5849 (80%) were chronic infections. Of the acute HBV infections, 34% were transmitted by homo- or bisexual contact and 25%

OBJECTIVE: To describe selected characteristics of Australian adults' regular or ongoing sexual relationships.
METHOD: Computer-assisted telephone interviews were completed by a representative sample of 10,173 men and 9,134 women aged 16-59 years. The overall response rate was 73.1% (69.4% men, 77.6% women). Respondents indicated how often they had sex in the past four weeks, contraceptive use, their own and their partners' expectations about having sex with other people during their relationship, whether they had discussed these expectations with their partners and whether they had an explic

Moderate support was obtained in a sample of 101 gay, bisexual, and heterosexual males for the perinatal hormone theory, which hypothesizes that attenuated levels of androgens during critical periods of male fetal development fail to masculinize and defeminize the brain. Affected individuals develop female-typical sexual orientation (assessed here by a pie chart) and cerebral organization, reflected in visual-spatial abilities and gender nonconformity. Handedness, also thought to reflect in utero hormone exposure, was evaluated. Gay and bisexual males reported greater femininity and lesser mas

This research was carried out in 1990 to examine high-risk injecting and sexual behaviour in a sample of injecting drug users (IDUs) in Perth. The study was a cross-sectional survey with a convenience sample drawn from drug treatment (54%) and non-treatment (46%) populations. In the sample of 150 IDUs, there were 11 very risky drug behaviour (VRDB) and 63 very risky sex behaviour (VRSB) respondents. Four respondents fell into both categories. Independent comparisons were made between each risk group and the rest of the sample. The VRDB respondents were heterosexual men, most of whom were in lo

The authors conducted a voluntary serosurvey and educational campaign among 3394 undergraduate students attending the University of Maryland at College Park to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Two students were seropositive (0.06%, 95% confidence interval 0-0.15%). Both were homosexual men with multiple sexual partners. Despite the low prevalence of infection, potential risk factors for transmission of HIV-1 were common, as assessed by a self-administered anonymous questionnaire. These included a previous sexually transmitt

BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition that autistic females present with more diverse gender and sexual identities than their non-autistic counterparts. Likewise, autistic females are also at an increased risk of adverse sexual experiences. As higher rates of sexual victimisation are observed in individuals with diverse sexual identities in the broader population, rates of negative sexual experiences among autistic females remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the representation of gender and sexual diversity within autistic females and examine their rates of regretted, and unwant

Self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) represent a major public health concern in the United States. Although sexual minority individuals experience disproportionately high rates of SIBs, research identifying population-specific risk factors remains limited. This study examined how stressful experiences common among sexual minority (SM) adults relate to the likelihood of SIBs in SM versus heterosexual adults. A community sample of adults aged 18-54 years (Mage = 30.52 years, SD = 9.66, 59.8% assigned female at birth) completed self-report and interview measures of trait-level SIB risk factors (emotio

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals face discrimination in health care, compromising both well-being and access to services. Such experiences may foster expectations of mistreatment and mistrust of health care professionals, contributing to delays in care with potentially adverse consequences. This study examined perceived discrimination, mental and physical health, trust in providers, and care-seeking behavior among young adults in Spain, comparing SGM participants with their cisgender heterosexual peers. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 217 participants (M = 21.5 a

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the age at which sexual and gender minorities are diagnosed with cancer relative to heterosexual cisgender individuals.
METHODS: We use population-based representative Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey data with self-reported sexual orientation, gender identity, cancer diagnoses, and the age at diagnosis. We determined the mean age at diagnosis and used logistic regression modeling to obtain odds ratios, reporting significant differences defined as p < 0.05. Separately, we adjusted for race/ethnicity and corrected for underlying differ

LGBTQ young adults are at increased risk for food insecurity and disordered eating behaviors. Food literacy is a related construct that may also impact disordered eating; however, research on these relationships is limited. It is also not well understood if food security and food literacy relate to disordered eating behaviors differently for LGBTQ and heterosexual individuals. The current study examined these constructs in a sample of college students (n = 572; 22 % LGBTQ), as well as examined sexual orientation as a moderator in the relationship between food insecurity/food literacy and disor

Purpose: We compared the prevalence of depression, hazardous alcohol use, daily tobacco use, and hazardous alcohol and tobacco use (HATU) by sexual orientation and sex among Brazilian adults. Methods: Data were obtained from a national health survey conducted in 2019. This study included participants aged 18 years and older (N = 85,859). Adjusted prevalence ratios (APRs) and confidence intervals were estimated using Poisson regression models stratified by sex to examine the association between sexual orientation, depression, daily tobacco use, hazardous alcohol use, and HATU. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Studies have identified dermatologic conditions and relevant skin-related behaviors that distinctly or disproportionately impact sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults compared with their cisgender/heterosexual counterparts, but whether these observations apply to SGM adolescents remains unknown. We aimed to describe the nature and frequency of skin conditions in SGM youth relative to their cisgender/heterosexual peers and explore adolescents' attitudes toward their skin health and accessing dermatologic care.
METHODS: SGM and cisgender/heterosexual youth aged 13-21 yea

Knowledge of determinants of anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among men is still limited as most of the studies are focused on high-risk populations and geographically narrowed. Such knowledge obtained in different populations is essential for better understanding of HPV natural history, transmission dynamics, and its role in the development and prevention of anogenital malignancies in different regions. Here we tested anal canal swab samples from 359 Russian heterosexual (323 human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]-negative and 27 HIV-positive, aged 18-67 years) men attending a sexually

Sexual and gender minorities have been shown to have greater rates of mental health, substance use disorders, and specific types of health problems compared to heterosexuals. Among the homeless population in several US urban areas, sexual and gender minorities are overrepresented but few studies have examined the mental and physical health status of homeless sexual and gender minorities, with studies on homeless gender minorities being particularly hard to find. Using survey data obtained from the city and county of San Francisco (2015 Homeless Survey), this study examined differences in cause

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse is a significant health concern among women veterans, especially among lesbian and bisexual veterans. Mediators that might explain alcohol disparities between heterosexual and sexual minority veterans have not yet been identified.
PURPOSE: To examine the role of civilian and military traumas and mental health symptoms (i.e., depression, post-traumatic stress disorder) in explaining sexual orientation disparities in alcohol misuse between sexual minority and heterosexual women veterans across the U.S.
METHODS: Women veterans were recruited using Internet methods to

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this cross-sectional study were to determine the prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI) in Hijras (self-identified transgenders of South Asia), study associated risk factors, and compare the prevalence with that in heterosexual men and men having sex with men (MSM) in Pune, India, between 1993 and 2002.
METHODS: After informed consent, individuals attending 3 STI clinics were administered a questionnaire regarding their demographic, socioeconomic, and sexual behaviors. Blood samples were collected for STI and HIV diagnosis. Bivariate and mult

OBJECTIVE: To compare the quality of life (QoL), a measure of psychological well-being, of adolescents reared in lesbian-mother families with that of a matched comparison group of adolescents with heterosexual parents. The adolescents in the comparison group were derived from a representative sample of adolescents in Washington state. The second aim of the study was to assess among teens with lesbian mothers whether donor status, maternal relationship continuity, and self-reported stigmatization are associated with QoL.
METHODS: In 1986, prospective lesbian mothers were recruited in Boston, W

OBJECTIVES: To estimate temporal trends in HIV incidence and prevalence in Scotland, according to three main risk groups for infection: men who have sex with men (MSM), injecting drug users (IDUs) and heterosexuals.
METHODS: The authors extracted data for all single- and multiple-tested individuals from the national HIV test database covering the period 1980-2009 and calculated the incidence of HIV infection in each risk group and estimated RRs by fitting Poisson regression models.
RESULTS: 620 of 59,807 individuals tested positive following an initial negative HIV test, generating an overal

This study assessed Kinsey self-ratings and lifetime sexual experiences of 17-year-olds whose lesbian mothers enrolled before these offspring were born in the longest-running, prospective study of same-sex parented families, with a 93% retention rate to date. Data for the current report were gathered through online questionnaires completed by 78 adolescent offspring (39 girls and 39 boys). The adolescents were asked if they had ever been abused and, if so, to specify by whom and the type of abuse (verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual). They were also asked to specify their sexual identity on

BACKGROUND: Sexually active heterosexual men may represent an important risk factor for HIV infection and STI transmission to their female partners and unborn children, though little is known about the prevalence of STIs in this population. We sought to determine the prevalence of HIV, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and syphilis infection and associated risk behaviors among male sex partners of pregnant women in Peru.
METHODS: Survey and seroprevalence data were collected from 1,835 male partners of pregnant women in four cities in Peru. Serum was tested for antibodies to HIV, HSV-2, an
