RATIONALE: Dopamine D4 receptors (D4Rs) have been implicated in the pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet their precise role and therapeutic relevance remain underexplored. Highly selective D4R compounds may provide a valuable tool to elucidate D4R function and assess their potential as non-stimulant ADHD treatments.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the behavioral effects of two novel D4R drugs, namely, FMJ-01-38 (high-efficacy partial agonist) and FMJ-01-54 (full antagonist) in adolescent spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR/NCrl), a validated ADHD animal mod

BACKGROUND: The sensory-motor network is essential for integrating sensory input with motor function and higher-order cognition. Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) within this network undergoes significant developmental changes, and disruptions in these connections have been linked to behavioral and psychiatric outcomes. However, the relationship between sensory-motor connectivity, early-life adversity, and later health behaviors remains understudied.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines the associations between rsFC within the sensory-motor network (mouth and hand regions) and key social

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) recognizes several psychopathological dimensions related to prefrontal cortex impairments. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) targeting the right prefrontal dorsolateral cortex (DLPFC) positively influence cognitive functions related to impulsivity in healthy subjects. A randomized double-blind study was designed to investigate whether tDCS could modulate core dimensions (impulsivity, aggression, affective dysregulation) of BPD. Also effects on decision making process and substances craving was assessed. Patients were randomized to receive acti

Since both borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar II disorder (BP-II) are common psychiatric diagnoses due to their co-morbidity and similar characteristics, some researchers suggested they coexist along a spectrum of cyclical affective disorders. As part of the ongoing debate regarding these central diagnoses, a few studies were recently conducted. The results showed that patients with BPD reported higher Levels of impulsiveness and hostility across Axis I diagnostic groups. Furthermore, refining the impulsivity scale revealed different types of impulsivity in the two disorders. Th

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is labeled as a personality disorder with impulsivity issues regarding relationships, risky behavior, and emotional dysregulation. This personality disorder is still considered to be hard-to-treat condition even though responses to treatment have improved significantly. In this field, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is recognized as one of the most efficient therapeutical approaches, and some versions adapted from this gold-standard treatment proved their effectiveness in clinical settings. We tested the 6-month cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol E

Dopaminergic therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease may change the quality as well as the quantity of sexual interest and behavior. This 72-year-old man had a 37-year history of Parkinson's disease treated with a right thalamotomy and was later treated with levodopa for more than 20 years. Selegiline (5 mg twice daily) was added for motor fluctuations. He developed a frequent impulse to wear women's clothing but did not act on this impulse until his wife died over a year later. He then began to dress in women's clothing an average of once per week. He stated he had never thought of cross

OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) presenting with impulse control disorders (ICDs) which responded to fluvoxamine and topiramate.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old woman was affected by several ICDs. At disease onset, she suffered from impulsive smoking and overeating which caused a body weight increase of 20 kg in 6 months. Later on she manifested binge-eating behavior and skin-picking compulsion. Presence of progressive frontal cognitive impairment (Mini Mental State Examination 24/30) and evidence of hypoperfusion of the anterior cingulate an

Changes in socio-emotional behavior and conduct, which are characteristic symptoms of frontal lobe damage, have less often been described in patients with focal subcortical injuries. We report on a case of pathological generosity secondary to a left lenticulocapsular stroke with hypoperfusion of several anatomically intact cortical areas. A 49-year-old man developed excessive and persistent generosity as he recovered from a left lenticulocapsular hematoma. His symptoms resembled an impulse control disorder. (99m)Tc-HMPAO SPECT demonstrated hypoperfusion mostly in the ipsilateral striatum, dors

BACKGROUND: Among an independent group of subjects selected for their history of violent, impulsive behaviors and nonviolent control subjects, we attempted to replicate the finding that plasma docosahexaenoic acid concentrations were negatively correlated with cerebrospinal fluid 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (CSF 5-HIAA) concentrations.
METHODS: CSF 5-HIAA and homovanillic acid (HVA), fasting total cholesterol, and plasma fatty acid concentrations were examined in violent and nonviolent subjects matched for their severity of alcohol dependence.
RESULTS: Violent subjects had significantly highe…

A 10-year-old child who suffered closed head trauma resulting in a coma of 1 week's duration at the age of 4, developed a persistent, severe behavioral disorder characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity, distractability, irritability, and grandiosity. Prior attempts at treatment with stimulants and behavioral modification were unsuccessful. Treatment with lithium carbonate resulted in a marked reduction in symptoms and attenuation in her emotional lability.

Impulsivity is a multidimensional phenomenon that remains hard to define. It compounds the core pathological construct of many neuropsychiatric illnesses, and despite its close relation to suicide risk, it currently has no specific treatment. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique whose application results in cognitive function improvement, both in healthy and psychiatric populations. Following PRISMA recommendations, a systematic review of the literature concerning tDCS's effects on impulsive behaviour was performed using the PubMed databa

Using a slot machine simulation, our laboratory has found that participants, given the opportunity not to gamble and to keep the money they have been staked, almost always choose to play the simulation. In this study, the authors investigated whether increasing the salience of the money for which participants played or increasing the response effort required to gamble the money would decrease gambling. In Experiment 1, participants in different groups were told about, were shown, or held the dollars 10 they were to be staked to play the simulation. Results showed that participants who held the

Drug and alcohol seeking behaviour has become a great global problem affecting millions of inhabitants with a cost to society in the billions. Dopaminergic reward pathways have frequently been implicated in the etiology of addictive behaviour. While other neurotransmitters have also been implicated, to date the only molecular genetic defect which has been found to associate with alcoholism, drug dependency, obesity, smoking, pathological gambling, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette syndrome, as well as other related compulsive behaviours, are the variants of the dopamine

OBJECTIVE: In forensic psychiatric patients, sleep problems as well as impulsivity and aggression are highly prevalent, yet studies on their association over time are lacking. This study investigates the association between sleep quality and changes in impulsivity and aggression in forensic psychiatric patients over one year.
METHODS: Data were drawn from an ongoing prospective observational study in adult forensic psychiatric patients admitted to a forensic treatment facility between October 2006 and January 2018. Validated self-reports and observational instruments were used to assess sleep

BACKGROUND: Psychological testing is used in some preoperative psychological evaluations of patients seeking metabolic and bariatric surgery. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) contains new norms, updated item content, and new scales such as Eating Concerns and Impulsivity, which are relevant to the assessment of patients seeking metabolic and bariatric surgery.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this investigation was to establish convergent and discriminant properties of the MMPI-3 scales with relevant clinical interview and medical record data from electronic medical records.
