Longitudinal change in ATN biomarkers in cognitively normal individuals.

BACKGROUND: Biomarkers for amyloid, tau, and neurodegeneration (ATN) have predictive value for clinical progression, but it is not clear how individuals move through these stages. We examined changes in ATN profiles over time, and investigated determinants of change in A status, in a sample of cognitively normal individuals presenting with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). METHODS: We included 92 individuals with SCD from the SCIENCe project with [18F]florbetapir PET (A) available at two time points (65 ± 8y, 42% female, MMSE 29 ± 1, follow-up 2.5 ± 0.7y). We additionally used [18F]flortauc

Rehabilitation of Individuals With Diabetes Mellitus: Focus on Diabetic Myopathy.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels, causing serious damage to the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and other systems. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was 6.28% in 2017, considering all age groups worldwide (prevalence rate of 6,059 cases per 100,000), and its global prevalence is projected to increase to 7,079 cases per 100,000 by 2030. Furthermore, these individuals are often affected by diabetic myopathy, which is the failure to preserve muscle mass and function in the course of DM. This happens in type 1 diabe

The Risk of COVID-19 Infection in Individuals with Alopecia Areata.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the risk of contracting coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in individuals with alopecia areata (AA) compared to individuals without AA. METHODS: We queried the Symphony Health-derived data from the COVID-19 Research Database, and individuals with a diagnosis of AA from 2019 to 2020 were included in the AA cohort. Subjects with no record of AA diagnosis from 2019 to 2020 were randomly placed in the control group in a 4:1 size ratio compared with the AA group. Laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 between January 1, 2020, and September 1, 2021, were identified. R

Individual differences and predictors of general awareness in problem gambling.

In Canada, up to 3% of individuals have or are at risk of gambling disorder. Among these individuals, a lack of awareness of their problem gambling is a common barrier to treatment and negatively affects treatment adherence. A secondary analysis was conducted on data from 1346 individuals (mean age = 43.4, SD = 14.4; 54.3 % male) with problem gambling who did and did not perceive having a problem with their gambling as assessed by the fifth item of the Problem Gambling Severity Index, "In the past twelve months, how often have you felt that you might have a problem with gambling?" Additionally

Assessing the landscape of STXBP1-related disorders in 534 individuals.

Disease-causing variants in STXBP1 are among the most common genetic causes of neurodevelopmental disorders. However, the phenotypic spectrum in STXBP1-related disorders is wide and clear correlations between variant type and clinical features have not been observed so far. Here, we harmonized clinical data across 534 individuals with STXBP1-related disorders and analysed 19 973 derived phenotypic terms, including phenotypes of 253 individuals previously unreported in the scientific literature. The overall phenotypic landscape in STXBP1-related disorders is characterized by neurodevelopmental

Neuroticism as a covariate of cognitive task performance in individuals with tinnitus.

Previous studies have shown cognitive task performance to be affected by tinnitus severity, but also that the literature is conflicted. This study sought to identify neuroticism as a possible confound, since severe tinnitus distress is associated with higher levels of neuroticism. A total of 78 participants (39 with and 39 without tinnitus) undertook two cognitive tasks. It was found that when undertaking a Stroop paradigm, controlling for neuroticism rendered previously significant results not significant. It was also found that neuroticism was not a significant covariate for a change blindne

Different ways of estimating the amount of individual sun exposure.

Linked article: Souedi et al. Br J Dermatol 2022; 186:266-273. The sun is the main source of exposure people have to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Sun exposure has some health benefits but also some adverse effects (for example sunburn and skin cancer). Studies about the link between UVR exposure and long-term health outcomes have used a number of different ways to try and accurately measure how much UVR individuals have been exposed to. We set out to study how accurate three different ways of measuring exposure to UVR were over 6 months: (1) ambient UVR levels, (2) self-reported time spent out

The Experience of Uncertainty in Individuals With High Risk for Pancreatic Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a strong family history of pancreatic cancer or a known hereditary cancer syndrome that is associated with pancreatic cancer are considered at high risk for developing pancreatic cancer. Living with a high risk for often fatal cancer is accompanied by high levels of uncertainty. Uncertainty is also independently associated with negative health outcomes. By understanding issues, sources, and responses to uncertainty, targeted supportive care strategies can be provided. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine how uncertainty manifests in the experience of being at h

The United States index of socioeconomic deprivation for individuals (USiDep).

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sleep health are well-known to be sex- and race-specific. To build on the established relationship between sleep duration and CVD risk, this cross-sectional study aimed to describe sex-specific associations between CVD risk and other sleep characteristics (sleep quality, sleep timing and sleep onset latency) in low-income adults of African descent. METHODS: Self-reported sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI], Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS], Insomnia Severity Index [ISI]), demographic and lifestyle data were collected in 412

Evaluation of cognitive functions in adult individuals with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cognitive deficits that are associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and occur in the acute period are gaining importance. While most studies have focused on the elderly severely affected during acute infection, it remains unclear whether mild to moderate COVID-19 results in cognitive deficits in young patients. This study aims to evaluate the post-infection cognitive functions of young adults with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19. METHODS: A total of 100 adults with similar age and educational background were included in the study. Half of those had be

The relation between gestures and stuttering in individuals with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that neurotypical individuals who stutter use fewer gestures than those who do not stutter. Presently, no research exists about the interaction of stuttering and gestures in individuals with Down syndrome. METHOD: Twenty-nine individuals with Down syndrome (7-19 years) of whom 16 stuttered and 13 spoke fluently and 20 neurotypical children (3-10 years) of whom 8 stuttered and 12 spoke fluently participated in this study. In spontaneous speech transcriptions, stuttering events and gestures were coded. RESULTS: Comparisons of gesture frequency during stuttered and fl

Variability in Phelan-McDermid Syndrome in a Cohort of 210 Individuals.

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS, OMIM# 606232) results from either different rearrangements at the distal region of the long arm of chromosome 22 (22q13.3) or pathogenic sequence variants in the SHANK3 gene. SHANK3 codes for a structural protein that plays a central role in the formation of the postsynaptic terminals and the maintenance of synaptic structures. Clinically, patients with PMS often present with global developmental delay, absent or severely delayed speech, neonatal hypotonia, minor dysmorphic features, and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), among other findings. Here, we describe a c
