Beyond black and white: A framework for identifying grey literature in palliative care research.

BACKGROUND: Research evidence is fundamental to informing clinical decision-making and advancing palliative care practice. Although academic, peer-reviewed journals underpin evidence-based healthcare, they represent only part of the knowledge landscape. Incorporating grey literature from sources outside traditional academic publishing can: provide context, balance and diverse perspectives; address knowledge gaps; and mitigate publication bias. However, its decentralised and dispersed nature can pose challenges for researchers unfamiliar with its scope and diversity. AIM: To present a flexible

The geographic scale of population-level variation in growth and nodulation differs for two species of prairie clover.

PREMISE: Prairies are among the most threatened biomes due to changing patterns of climate and land use, yet information on genetic variation in key species that would inform conservation is often limited. We assessed evidence for the geographic scale of population-level variation in growth of two species of prairie clover and of their symbiotic associations with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. METHODS: Seed representing two species, Dalea candida and D. purpurea, from the same five source populations were planted into an experimental site in Minnesota. We assessed variation within and among source

Patient-provider communication with HIV-positive women about abnormal Pap test results.

In this article, the authors examine communication between women living with human immunodeficiency virus (WLH) and health care providers (HCPs) regarding abnormal Pap tests. During the period of March 2011 through April 2012, 145 WLH were recruited from Ryan White funded clinics and community-based AIDS service organizations located in the southeastern United States. WLH who had an abnormal Pap test (69%, n = 100/145) were asked if their HCP shared and explained information about abnormal Pap tests. The authors performed chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression analyses using St

Neural mechanisms of human perceptual choice under focused and divided attention.

Perceptual decisions occur after the evaluation and integration of momentary sensory inputs, and dividing attention between spatially disparate sources of information impairs decision performance. However, it remains unknown whether dividing attention degrades the precision of sensory signals, precludes their conversion into decision signals, or dampens the integration of decision information toward an appropriate response. Here we recorded human electroencephalographic (EEG) activity while participants categorized one of two simultaneous and independent streams of visual gratings according to

Lesson of the month 1: Spontaneous septic thrombophlebitis presenting with bacteraemia diagnosed by PET-CT scan.

Spontaneous septic thrombophlebitis is a rare complication of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia. Its true incidence is unknown as septic thrombus is not often considered as a source in the typical 'screen' of tests used to find the source of a bacteraemia.Positron emission tomography computerised tomography (PET-CT) is becoming increasingly available to physicians, is highly sensitive and yields specific anatomical information regarding abnormal metabolically active sites in infection, inflammation and neoplasia. In this case, PET-CT enabled the identification of the source of a septic thrombus

Balancing obligations: should written information about life-sustaining treatment be neutral?

Parents who are facing decisions about life-sustaining treatment for their seriously ill or dying child are supported by their child's doctors and nurses. They also frequently seek other information sources to help them deal with the medical and ethical questions that arise. This might include written or web-based information. As part of a project involving the development of such a resource to support parents facing difficult decisions, some ethical questions emerged. Should this information be presented in a strictly neutral fashion? Is it problematic if narratives, arguments or perspectives…

Responsive lysogeny under nonproductive phage binding.

Upon infecting a bacterial cell, temperate phages make a decision between lysis and lysogeny. While research has previously explored how phages sense environmental information to make this choice, most studies have focused on modelling known mechanisms that impact the decision. These mechanisms tell us what environmental information the phage does respond to, but not what it should respond to, as the signals sensed by the phage may serve as proxies for other sources of information. Here, using a mechanism-agnostic population dynamics model, we find that irreversible phage binding to lysogens p

Managerial imperatives for health-security information sharing: Balancing confidentiality and utility amid a deepening interface.

COVID-19 deepened the interface between health and security, making information the decisive currency of collaboration. This paper foregrounds the "confidentiality-utility dilemma": how health and security communities-each premised on strict secrecy in distinct operational contexts-can share information without undermining the other side's core values. We argue that purposeful managerial design is both necessary and feasible. First, we address the structural limitations of global rule-making and the concomitant drift toward diversification of sources and strengthened capabilities to uncover hi

The Role of Spatial Statistics in the Control and Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Focus on Human African Trypanosomiasis, Schistosomiasis and Lymphatic Filariasis.

Disease control and elimination programmes can benefit greatly from accurate information on the spatial variability of disease risk, particularly when risk is highly spatially heterogeneous. Due to advances in statistical methodology, coupled with the increased availability of geospatial technology, this information is becoming increasingly accessible. In this chapter we describe recent advancements in spatial methods associated with the analysis of disease data measured at the point-level and demonstrate their application to the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Conditional routing of information to the cortex: a model of the basal ganglia's role in cognitive coordination.

The basal ganglia play a central role in cognition and are involved in such general functions as action selection and reinforcement learning. Here, we present a model exploring the hypothesis that the basal ganglia implement a conditional information-routing system. The system directs the transmission of cortical signals between pairs of regions by manipulating separately the selection of sources and destinations of information transfers. We suggest that such a mechanism provides an account for several cognitive functions of the basal ganglia. The model also incorporates a possible mechanism b

A systematic review of the quality of information on the treatment of anxiety disorders on the internet.

A vast amount of information describing health interventions is available on the Internet. This paper describes the systematic retrieval and quality assessment of websites containing information on the treatment of anxiety disorders. Separate searches were conducted for information on generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobia. The Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines yielded 540 results, 110 of which were eligible for inclusion. Sixty-seven unique websites were identified. The DISCE

Concordance about childhood sexual abuse among depressed patients 50 and over and their family and friends.

In post-mortem studies of suicide, informant sources are often relied upon to provide information to identify correlates of suicide and suicidal behavior. While previous research has shown that informants can supply reliable information about patients' recent stressful life events, it is unknown whether informants and patients provide concordant data about adverse early life experiences such as childhood sexual abuse. This study examined concordance between patient and informant reports of childhood sexual abuse in a sample of depressed patients 50 years and older. Patients and informants (n=8

Healthcare professionals' knowledge of motor neurone disease.

Healthcare professionals have a professional duty to provide patients with accurate information in order to assist in managing their illness. This may be more difficult with an uncommon illness, such as motor neurone disease (MND), as many healthcare professionals may feel poorly informed about the illness themselves. This study set out to survey the level of knowledge and understanding about MND among a group of 100 healthcare professionals who had personal experience of managing the care of a person with MND. The value of the MND nurse specialist and the Motor Neurone Disease Association as

Epidemiological assessment of drug-induced disease.

Adverse reactions are a potential concern for physicians when they prescribe or recommend drugs. Epidemiological principles, when combined with clinical judgment, can be of help in this situation, starting with an appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of different sources of information on adverse reactions--clinical trials, case reports, and formal epidemiological studies. The latter studies generally provide the most comprehensive information on the risks of serious adverse drug reactions. An understanding of the different types of risk estimates, relative and absolute, is also needed

Promoting a personalized vaccine information website through social media and local outreach: a dissemination and implementation study.

Vaccine hesitancy is a major public health problem, with social media playing a crucial role in the spread of reliable vaccine information, as well as misinformation and disinformation. LetsTalkShots is a website that offers tailored, evidence-based vaccine information including personal narratives, credible sources, and animation. We compared the cost of promoting LetsTalkShots through outreach efforts of five local public health departments versus a paid social media campaign targeting the same five communities. Social media ads drove traffic at a low cost per click, though local outreach ef

Artificial intelligence in liver diseases: Improving diagnostics, prognostics and response prediction.

Clinical routine in hepatology involves the diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of metabolic, infectious, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases. Clinicians integrate qualitative and quantitative information from multiple data sources to make a diagnosis, prognosticate the disease course, and recommend a treatment. In the last 5 years, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in deep learning, have made it possible to extract clinically relevant information from complex and diverse clinical datasets. In particular, histopathology and radiology image data contain diagnostic, pr
