Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, primarily due to the progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Despite available treatments targeting intraocular pressure (IOP), there remains an urgent need for effective strategies that directly protect RGCs by addressing mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress-two interlinked pathological hallmarks of glaucomatous neuropathy. Here, we report the development of Mitochondria-Targeting Reactive Persulfide Donor Peptide (RPDP-Mito), a superoxide-responsive, mitochondria-targeting peptide-persulfide donor conjugate,

Heat stress is a growing constraint in aquaculture, yet effective nutritional strategies for newly domesticated stream-dwelling fish remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether dietary lipid-source supplementation of a commercial feed could modulate chronic heat stress responses in the stream-dwelling fish Acrossocheilus fasciatus. Fish were reared for 60 days under two temperature regimes (24 °C and 32 °C) and fed a commercial basal diet supplemented with graded fish oil (F) to corn oil (C) ratios: F0:C4, F1:C3, F2:C2, and F4:C0. Growth performance, survival, brain cortisol, liver

Trans and nonbinary adults assigned female at birth (TNBF) are at elevated cardiovascular risk, an effect proposed to occur secondary to testosterone use. However, gender minority (GM) stress may also contribute to cardiovascular risk. Therefore, we examined the relative association of GM stress and testosterone with blood pressure (BP) and its regulation in TNBF adults. In 24 TNBF adults (12 not using and 12 using testosterone), GM stress was derived from a standardized composite score of seven psychosocial scales, and total testosterone was measured via radioimmunoassay. BP was assessed at r

Sucrose non-fermenting protein 7 (SNF7) is a core operator of the endosomal sorting complex required for transport III (ESCRT-III) component mediating protein sorting and degradation. To date, the SNF7 gene family remains poorly characterized in plants, particularly in maize (Zea mays L.). Here, we integrated bioinformatic and transcriptomic analyses to systematically characterize the ZmSNF7 gene family and its regulatory potential in stress responses. In total, 20 ZmSNF7 genes were identified genome-wide and classified into three phylogenetic clades, with conserved motifs and similar tertiary

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, triggered by the accumulation of misfolded proteins, activates the unfolded protein response (UPR) to restore protein homeostasis. Dysregulated ER stress responses have emerged as critical modulators of cancer progression and immune escape, influencing the initiation, development and maintenance of antitumor immunity. The UPR is mediated by three principal sensors-PERK, IRE1α, and ATF6-each operating at distinct regulatory levels to coordinate translational reprogramming, RNA processing, and transcriptional reprogramming. Through these mechanisms, ER stress p

Intestinal malrotation places pediatric patients at the risk of midgut volvulus, a complication that can lead to ischemic bowel, short gut syndrome, and even death. Even though the treatments for symptomatic patients of this complication are clear, it is still a challenge to identify asymptomatic patients who are at a higher risk of midgut volvulus and decide on a suitable course of treatment. Development of an accurate computerized model of this intestinal abnormality could help in gaining a better understanding of its integral behavior. To aid in developing such a model, in the current study

Plant development is exquisitely sensitive to the environment. Light quantity, quality, and duration (photoperiod) have profound effects on vegetative morphology and flowering time. Recent studies have demonstrated that ambient temperature is a similarly potent stimulus influencing morphology and flowering. In Arabidopsis, ambient temperatures that are high, but not so high as to induce a heat stress response, confer morphological changes that resemble the shade avoidance syndrome. Similarly, these high but not stressful temperatures can accelerate flowering under short day conditions as effec

The application of nanotechnology presents a promising strategy for mitigating heavy metal toxicity in crops, yet the integrative mechanisms underlying nanoparticle-mediated stress alleviation across the plant-soil system remain poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the transcriptomic and rhizosphere microbial responses of maize to cadmium (Cd) stress and the responses associated with fungal-mediated iron-based nanoparticles (NPs). Characterization confirmed the synthesis of spherical, Fe-O dominant NPs with uniform distribution. Under Cd stress, transmission electron microscopy revealed

Pathogenic bacteria rely on protein phosphorylation to adapt quickly to stress, including that imposed by the host during infection. Penicillin-binding protein and serine/threonine-associated (PASTA) kinases are signal transduction systems that sense cell wall integrity and modulate multiple facets of bacterial physiology in response to cell envelope stress. The PASTA kinase in the cytosolic pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, PrkA, is required for cell wall stress responses, cytosolic survival, and virulence, yet its substrates and downstream signaling pathways remain incompletely defined. We co

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oxidative damage caused by drought stress is a key factor limiting crop survival and distribution. The desert plant Pugionium dolabratum exhibits extreme drought tolerance, but its intrinsic antioxidant regulatory mechanism remains unclear.
METHODS: In this study, a progressive soil drought treatment was used systematically to evaluate the growth status of P. dolabratum seedlings and the dynamic response of the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle.
KEY RESULTS: Integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses identified a set of genes significantly and concordantly regu

Saccharum spp., a globally important crop for sugar and bioenergy production, suffers substantial yield losses due to drought. Whole-plant studies are complicated by inherent tissue heterogeneity and organ-level interactions. To dissect this complexity, we established a homogeneous suspension cell line from the drought-tolerant cultivar 'Roc22'. A gradient of polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000)-induced drought stress (0%, 5%, 10%, 20%) was applied, enabling integrated cytological, physiological, and transcriptomic analysis. Cytological analysis revealed a concentration-dependent decline in cel

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress partially leads to depression through the gut-brain axis, yet the underlying multi-level mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to delineate the pathway from chronic restraint stress (CRS) to depressive-like behaviors, focusing on interactions among gut microbiota, their metabolites, and host transcriptional responses in the colon and hippocampus.
METHODS: A CRS mice model was established and validated by behavioral tests. We performed 16S rRNA sequencing of gut microbiota, RNA-sequencing of colon and hippocampal tissues, and integrated these with assessments of

Elevated ammonia nitrogen significantly reduces the survival rate of Litopenaeus vannamei under low-salinity conditions. Low-salinity culture is widely adopted in shrimp farming but susceptible to ammonia accumulation; however, relevant studies mainly focus on juvenile shrimp under single stress or normal salinity. With the aim of exploring how L. vannamei responds physiologically and molecularly to elevated ammonia nitrogen after low-salinity adaptation, shrimp were gradually acclimated to 5‱ salinity. They were reared at 5‱ for one week before being exposed to high levels of ammonia nitrogen

BACKGROUND: Well-established evidence exists of an association between depressive symptoms and alterations in the stress and inflammatory response systems; however, the picture is far less coherent during the perinatal period. This study combines the assessment of multiple stress and inflammatory biomarkers in late pregnancy and after delivery in order to investigate cross-sectional and prospective associations with perinatal depressive symptoms.
METHODS: One-hundred-ten healthy women were assessed in late pregnancy (mean gestational age=34.76; SD=1.12) and 89 were re-evaluated after delivery

UNLABELLED: This study investigates a previously unreported stress signal transduced as crosstalk between the cell wall integrity (CWI) pathway and the septation initiation network (SIN). Echinocandins, which target cell wall synthesis, are widely used to treat mycoses. Their efficacy, however, is species specific. Our findings suggest that this is due largely to CWI-SIN crosstalk and the ability of filamentous species to fortify with septa in response to echinocandin stress. To better understand this crosstalk, we used a microscopy-based assay to measure septum density, aiming to understand t

Plaque-induced periodontal diseases occur in response to the accumulation of dental plaque. Disease manifestation and progression is determined by the nature of the immune response to the bacterial complexes in plaque. In general, predisposing factors for these periodontal diseases can be defined as those factors which retain or hinder the removal of plaque and, depending upon the nature of the immune response to this plaque, the disease will either remain stable and not progress or it may progress and result in chronic periodontitis. In contrast, modifying factors can be defined as those fact

The MYB transcription factors family constitutes one of the largest and most functionally diversified regulatory gene families in plants. Beyond their established roles in growth and development, MYB TFs function as central integrators of metabolic reprogramming and environmental adaptation by coordinating developmental processes, secondary metabolism, hormone signaling, and stress-responsive pathways. Despite substantial progress in elucidating the functions of individual MYB members, a systematic synthesis linking their structural diversification, evolutionary expansion, and functional speci

The rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a growing global concern, with environmental pollutants implicated in its progression. 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE 47) exhibits hepatotoxic potential, but its role in MASLD-to-HCC progression remains unclear. Here, we investigated the association between BDE 47 and MASLD using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and explored the potential mechanisms through network toxicology and multiomics analyses.
