BACKGROUND: The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeted therapies have been tested in the clinic as treatments for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Owing to intrinsic or acquired resistance, EGFR-targeted therapies often lead to a low response rate and treatment failure. Interferon-alpha (IFNα) is a chemosensitising agent and multi-functional cytokine with a tumour inhibitory effect. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report the clinical outcomes of patients with conjunctival melanoma treated with interferon (IFN) α-2b eye drops following local tumor resection.
METHODS: Five eyes of five patients were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent the local resection of tumors, and topical IFNα-2b eye drops were subsequently administered 4 times/day until the complete disappearance of the pigmented lesions determined by slit-lamp examination. Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is characterized by a profound deregulation of the mechanisms controlling cell-cycle progression and survival. We herein show that the combination of 9-cis-retinoic acid (RA) and IFN-α induces marked antiproliferative and proapoptotic effects in MCL cells through the modulation of critical targets. BACKGROUND: We previously reported that Fas antigen was strongly expressed on salivary duct epithelial cells and that some salivary infiltrating cells showed the Fas ligand in patients with severe sialoadenitis due to Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Apoptotic changes were observed in ductal epithelial cells and some infiltrating cells by DNA nick end labeling methods. One prominent effect of IFNs is their cell growth-inhibitory activity. The mechanism behind this inhibition of proliferation is still not fully understood. In this study, the effect of IFN-alpha treatment on cell cycle progression has been analysed in three lymphoid cell lines, Daudi, U-266 and H9. A patient with HbsAG positive chronic persistent hepatitis is demonstrated in whom a liver biopsy specimen showed a nonsuspected asymptomatic infection with Schistosoma mansoni. Further investigations showed no signs of liver fibrosis or portal hypertension. Rectal biopsy specimens also showed Schistosoma mansoni. The combination of Schistosomiasis and hepatitis is well known in the literature, the effect of recombinant interferon therapy in these cases, however, is not known. Seventeen male homosexual outpatients with limited but progressive AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) of skin, lymph nodes, oral cavity, and gastrointestinum were consecutively enrolled in an open, nonrandomized, prospective study.
