Optic aphasia: a process of interaction between vision and language.

A neurological syndrome, called in the literature ether optic aphasia or visual anomia, is defined in principle as the inability to name visually presented objects, together with the preservation of both the ability to identify them by sight correctly and to name them when they are presented in another sensory modality. This syndrome was first described by Freund in 1889, but since then its existence has been continually questioned. When it is accepted, the most common interpretation of it is in terms of an anatomical visuo-verbal disconnection. However, the precise level of the psychological

Language Impairment in Children of Mothers with Gestational Diabetes, Preeclampsia, and Preterm Delivery: Current Hypothesis and Potential Underlying Mechanisms : Language Impartment and Pregnancy Complications.

Many conditions may impair or delay language development, including socioeconomic status, parent's education, or intrauterine environment. Accordingly, increasing evidence has described that pregnancy complications, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preeclampsia, and preterm delivery, are associated with the offspring's impaired neurodevelopment. Since language is one of the high brain functions, alterations in this function are another sign of neurodevelopment impairment. How these maternal conditions may generate language impairment has yet to be entirely understood. However, si…

Outcomes from a community speech and language therapy service treatment waiting list: The natural history of 525 children with identified speech and language needs.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the natural history of developmental speech and language impairments can support the selection of children whose difficulties are persistent rather than transitory. It can also provide information against which the effectiveness of intervention can be evaluated. However, natural history data are difficult to collect ethically. Furthermore, as soon as an impairment is identified, the behaviour of those around changes, thus creating some level of intervention. Longitudinal cohort studies, where intervention is minimal, or the control arm of randomized trials have provid…

Clinical safety, content coverage, and patient-centered language of AI responses to periodontal complaint-based queries: a comparative study of four large language models.

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical safety, informational completeness, and patient-centered language of responses generated by four large language model (LLM)-based systems to standardized periodontal complaint-based queries. Seven standardized symptom-based periodontal queries were developed based on commonly reported patient complaints and submitted in Turkish to Copilot, Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT. Responses were evaluated using a structured rule-based framework consisting of a Content Coverage Score (CCS), Risk of Harm Score (RHS), and Patient Language Score (PLS). Assessments were…

Exploring the feasibility of inferring prostate cancer pathological grade from multiparametric MRI text reports using natural language processing: assessment of four large language models.

OBJECTIVES: This study conducted a natural language processing feasibility analysis aimed at comparing four large language models (LLMs) in terms of (a) reproducibility and (b) predictive accuracy for International Society of Urological Pathology Grade Groups (ISUP GGs) based on structured text reports from prostate multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). METHODS: The study first used LLMs to perform the initial round of ISUP GGs predictions based solely on the mpMRI text reports. This was followed by a second round of predictions that incorporated clinical information. Each predi…

Frequency of Depression Screening and Follow-Up Actions Among English Language Preference and Non-English Language Preference Adults in an Urban Family Medicine Clinic.

IntroductionDepression is a common mental health disorder in the United States and associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. We assessed the association between language preferences on the frequency of depression screenings and follow-up actions within a primary care setting.MethodsThis was a retrospective cohort study of adult patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center in 2019. Our exposure was patient preference to use a non-English language. Our primary outcome was a completed annual depression screening. We also assessed follow-up actions after a positive …

Metaphors we learn to sign by: Positive transfer effects of existing sign language expertise and gestural repertoire on metaphor inferencing in a novel sign language.

Our study investigated metaphor inferencing in second languages (L2). According to universalist accounts, L2 metaphor comprehension should be intuitive. However, cross-linguistic differences suggest that successful metaphor inferencing is subject to transfer effects. Little is known about the interaction of transfer effects involving modality differences in the context of sign languages. We investigated whether existing sign language expertise enhances SPACE-TIME metaphor inferencing in signed L2s. Crucially, we focused on SPACE-TIME metaphor inferencing because the need to abstract from salie…

Experiences from a language development intervention in nursing homes from the perspective of first-line managers, language advocates and care staff: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: An increase in foreign-born workers in nursing homes (NHs) has challenged first-line managers to implement language initiatives for their staff. Evidence regarding foreign-born care workers' experiences of language support initiatives is still scarce. Thus, the aim of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of a language development intervention "Talk about Work" from the perspective of first-line managers (FLMs), language advocates and participating care staff. METHODS: An explorative qualitative study using on-going evaluation methods following the intervention "Ta…

Moving ahead in language: observations on a report of precocious language development in 3-4 year old children with spinal muscular atrophy type II.

Benony and Benony in a recent issue of this Journal have presented new data on the precocity of language acquisition in children with type II spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), at age 36-47 months. They refer to our interim report of advanced early language development in these motor-impaired children, which covers the age period 18-35 months. Here, we provide more details of our findings and discuss them in relation to their report and our theory of the role of the procedural system in language learning.

Detecting Language-Related Disparities in Spiritual Care Using Artificial Intelligence.

INTRODUCTION: Language barriers perpetuate health care disparities, yet traditional data sources overlook inequities in relationship‑based care. This study uses artificial intelligence to examine language‑related disparities in spiritual care, a domain largely documented in unstructured clinical notes. METHODS: We analyzed electronic health records of 7,360 deceased adults aged ≥65 years from a tertiary hospital (2010-2023). Natural language processing identified spiritual care documentation, and structured flowsheets captured formal chaplain visits. Logistic regression assessed associations …

Efficient zero-shot post-training quantization of large language models.

Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have revolutionized artificial intelligence; however, their massive parameter counts create a significant barrier to deployment on memory-constrained hardware. A critical challenge for ubiquitous AI is the memory bandwidth bottleneck, as billions of weights must be moved from memory to compute units for every generated token. While Post-Training Quantization (PTQ) offers a practical path to compression, existing state-of-the-art methods still struggle with major limitations: they either rely on computationally expensive calibration data, which risks overf…

LLM4PDA: Augmenting piRNA-Disease Association Prediction with Large Language Models.

PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) maintain genomic stability by interacting with PIWI proteins and have been implicated in various human diseases. However, wet-lab experiments remain limited in throughput, creating an urgent need for computational methods to systematically identify piRNA-disease associations. Although numerous computational approaches have been proposed, they still face major challenges such as limited feature representations and insufficient integration of biological knowledge. This study presents LLM4PDA, a large language model-augmented framework for piRNA-disease association …

More than fuel: Why athletes need better language around food.

"Food is fuel" is a widely used phrase in sport settings intended to emphasize the importance of nutrition for performance. While nutrition … ay contribute to rigid, rule-based approaches to eating. This commentary argues that "food is fuel" language reflects and reinforced broader sports norms centered around optimization, control, and performance. Potential consequences include reduced attunement to internal cues and the moralization of food choices, particularly in sport environments where ap …

VideoVista: Benchmarking Diverse and Complex Video-Language Interaction for MLLMs.

Multimodal AI's video comprehension reflects real-world dynamic understanding, but mainstream Video-Language Interaction (Video QA) benchmarks are primarily English-centric, narrow-domain, and only test basic perceptual or reasoning skills, lacking holistic assessment of model performance across diverse languages, domains, and complex spatiotemporal scenarios. To address these gaps, we present VideoVista, a versatile multilingual and multidomain video comprehension benchmark, built via scalable, quality-controlled automatic QA generation and manual refinement. Evaluations on 41 leading MLLMs r…
