BACKGROUND: The advent of high-energy carbon dioxide (CO2) laser-assisted hair transplantation in recent years provides a new recipient area technique for hair restoration surgery. It offers the advantages of less bleeding, time consumption, and graft compression. Specific laser parameters have been recommended in Caucasian but not Oriental patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to summarize our use of the Holmium laser as a tool in performing chondroplasties of the knee and to determine whether any untoward affects developed at the site of laser application.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia secondary to carcinoma of the oesophagus and gastric cardia is the principal symptom requiring palliation in those patients who present with late-stage disease or who are unfit for surgery. The primary aim of the present study was to determine the safety and efficacy of laser photocoagulation in the palliation of malignant dysphagia. Secondary aims were to look at reasons for failure and predictors of outcome; to determine the most appropriate second line therapy for treatment failures; and to look at the results of treatment for early stage disease.

Finkelstein et al have attempted to provide objective data regarding laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) and uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). Their study represents an important and ambitious undertaking because there is a paucity of anatomical studies in the literature. There are several significant concerns in the design of the protocol, however, that require caution in the interpretation and application of the results.

We used diode laser photocoagulation to treat 22 eyes of 12 patients with retinopathy of prematurity. Three infants were followed for at least six months and nine for at least one year. We treated 14 eyes with threshold disease and 8 eyes with prethreshold disease. The treatment was administered within 72 hours of diagnosis and topical anesthesia and sedation were used. No evidence of lesions of the anterior segment of preretinal or vitreous hemorrhages was found after the treatment. External inflammatory signs were neglibible. Systemic complications occurred only in three treatment sessions.

Recently, an Er:YAG laser has attracted attention because of the possibility of cutting hard tissues with extremely small thermal effects. In this article, we report 8 cases (13 teeth) of apicoectomy using Er:YAG laser. All procedures were performed without using an air turbine or an electric drill. Although the cutting speed of this laser was slightly slower than ordinary methods, its clinical application for apicoectomy has many advantages including absence of discomfort and vibration, less chance for contamination of the surgical site, and reduced risk of trauma to adjacent tissue.

The Kamami technique of laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty has recently been introduced into British practice as an office-based multistage procedure for the treatment of snoring and, in certain cases, for obstructive sleep apnoea. We have treated 50 patients with simple snoring, with a minimum follow-up of six months. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) has become a widely used procedure for the treatment of snoring and mild sleep apnea in the United States. Between July 1993 and December 1994, the authors of this study prospectively evaluated 541 consecutive patients referred to their hospital for possible LAUP to treat loud disruptive snoring. This study investigates the use of tissue-soldering techniques to substitute or reinforce traditional suture closure of dural incisions. Fresh human cadaveric dura was incised and subsequently closed by use of three techniques: (1) conventional interrupted suture with 4-0 silk (n = 25), (2) laser solder reinforced suture closure (n = 25), and (3) laser solder closure alone (n = 25). Scanning laser Doppler flowmetry is a new means for the measurement of capillary perfusion. We studied the retinal and neuroretinal rim capillary perfusion with the Heidelberg Retina Flowmeter in one randomly selected eye of 31 healthy volunteers, 42 primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients and 17 normal pressure glaucoma (NPG) patients.
