Clinical aspects of hysteria.

This is a clinical study of 80 patients, diagnosed as suffering from hysteria, who attended the psychiatric clinic in Khartoum Hospital over a period of 3 years. The incidence of hysteria was 10%, the female-male ratio 15:1, and young age-groups predominate. 60% were essentially of normal personality. The clinical picture was fairly consistent. Hysterical conversion was the commonest clinical form (76%) and the dissociative type was rare. The patients with recurrent and vague bodily complaints could be labeled as histrionic.

An indigenous conceptualization of reactive depression in Trinidad.

While depressive reactions appear to be universal, until recently they have seldom been described outside Europe, probably because of their lack of exotic salience, but also because they are seldom identified locally as distinct entities. Where it occurs, such an identification reflects a local preference for the articulation of individual psychological notions, rather than universal moral imperatives. While the symptoms of reactive depression are recognized in rural Trinidad as a common experience, but not especially remarked, they are also identified by Afro-Caribbeans as a specific state, T

Depression and anxiety in cancer patients: evidence for different causes.

Fifty-seven cancer patients currently receiving treatment were classified into three groups: (1) those who stated they were depressed/anxious for reasons other than cancer at any time in the past, including the interview day, (2) those who stated they were depressed/anxious solely related to cancer during the past or currently, (3) those who stated they were not depressed/anxious at anytime either in the past or currently, or had only 'normal' symptoms. Patients who were depressed for reasons other than cancer scored higher on self-rated anxiety, depression, and somatization. Patients who were

Identification of medical student problems and comparison with those of other students.

The perceived problems of 585 medical students were compared with those of 1,110 students in the other health sciences colleges at the same institution. Through the use of a 5-point Likert scale, the students were able to indicate the degree to which each of 83 problem items on an inventory was of concern to them. The inventory included items concerning problems with life situation and school environment, other people, behavior, and feelings. The medical students were found to have the same spectrum of perceived problems as the other students but complained of these problems significantly more

Coping with life changes--a preventive social work approach.

Life changes requiring substantial social readjustment were utilized to identify a population presumed to be at risk. Respondents who incurred two or more life changes, e.g., death (family member or close friend), divorce, separation, loss of work, incapacitating illness of or accident to self or close family member, imprisonment and/or retirement, in the previous 6 weeks to 1 year and who had not received formal treatment were invited to the intervention. Intervention consisted of cognitive and affective measures utilizing didactic and small-group dynamics. Substantial verbal and nonverbal su

Chronic gastric ulcer and life events.

The purpose of this study was to define the frequency of stress preceding or during the course of chronic gastric ulcer (CGU). Stress was measured by the occurrence of 62 selected life events over 2 yr in two groups of CGU patients. One group (A) was studied for events during the 2 yr before their diagnosis (147 patients) and the second group (B) was studied for events occurring after diagnosis (73 patients). The ulcer groups were compared with community controls matched for age, sex, and social grade. Groups A and B did not differ in any significant way in their reported life events, indicati

Childhood adversity and depressive symptoms in undergraduates: a partial proportional odds model reveals severity-dependent life event associations and stress sensitization.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is an established risk factor for depression, yet critical gaps remain in understanding its nuanced impact on emerging adults in academic settings, especially in conjunction with stressful life events and how these associations vary across the severity spectrum of depression. METHODS: We employed probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling to recruit 1,470 undergraduates from a Chinese university. Partial proportional odds models (PPOM) were fitted to analyze data, as Brant tests indicated a violation of the proportional odds assumption specifically for life

Life events and postpartum depressive symptoms among Black and Latina mothers: The role of protective factors.

Approximately, 15% of women in the United States experience postpartum depression, but Black and Latina women continue to suffer at disproportionately higher rates. While literature has shown that the experience of life stressors is a strong predictor of postpartum depressive symptoms, less research has examined personal and contextual resources that can protect minoritized groups from poor mental health outcomes during the perinatal period. The current article investigated whether four types of protective factors (family support, doctor support, nurse support, and perceived control) moderated

Tracing trauma: a longitudinal study on PTSD, traumatic incidents, and social support among Icelandic adults.

PURPOSE: To longitudinally assess traumatic experiences, new trauma incidences, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social support, as well as how these variables are interconnected over time. METHOD: The results are based on a three-wave longitudinal survey (from 2019 to 2022) including a random sample of Icelandic adults. Of 1766 respondents, 1528 had experienced a traumatic event and were included in the analysis. Of those, 1029 responded at wave 2 and 596 at wave 3. RESULTS: The new incidence rate of exposure to traumatic events was high, with 52.1% of participants repor

Association of early adversity, neuroticism, and depression with perceived severity ratings of stressful life event vignettes.

Stress appraisal is implicated in psychological outcomes and may be influenced by environment, personality, and psychopathology, but novel methods are needed to examine how individual differences influence appraisal. Using participant-rated stress appraisals of life event vignettes, we hypothesised an association between researcher-rated and perceived severity, and early adversity, neuroticism, and depression would each be associated with higher average ratings of stress severity and steeper slopes, that is, a more rapidly increasing rate in perceived severity ratings as researcher-rated sever

Stress dynamics that maintain posttraumatic stress disorder across 20 years.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often chronic and impairing. Mechanisms that maintain symptoms remain poorly understood because of heterogenous presentation. We parsed this heterogeneity by examining how individual differences in stress-symptom dynamics relate to the long-term maintenance of PTSD. METHODS: We studied 7,308 trauma-exposed World Trade Center responders who self-reported PTSD symptoms and stressful life events at annual monitoring visits for up to 20 years (average = 8.8 visits; [range = 4-16]). We used multilevel structural equation models to separate the st

The Impact of a Registry-Based Environmental Risk Score on Episodes of Alcohol Use Disorder and Drug Use Disorder in Swedish National Samples.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial stress increases the risk for subsequent episodes of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and drug use disorder (DUD), with most studies assessing stress exposure by questionnaire or interview methods. We developed an environmental risk score (ERS) using multiple classes of stressful life events (SLEs) obtained from national Swedish registries. METHOD: We assessed, in the entire adult population of Sweden (N = 7,105,712), the occurrence of 51 categories of SLEs derived from registry information for the 6 months before September 1, 2010, and the risk for AUD and DUD registration

Self-compassion as a shield? Investigating self-compassion's prospective role in buffering the effects of traumatic and negative life events.

Background and Objectives: Existing research highlights the potential role of self-compassion in promoting trauma recovery over time but does not clarify whether an individual's level of self-compassion prior to experiencing a trauma is a protective factor against the onset of symptoms. This prospective study tests whether baseline self-compassion buffers the link between exposure to traumatic or stressful events and subsqeuent mental and behavioral health (post-traumatic stress symptoms, general psychological distress, eating pathology, alcohol use problems, and sexual dissatisfaction) among

Parental major life events before or during pregnancy and autistic behaviors among preschool children.

In this study, we aimed to examine whether parental major life events before or during pregnancy were associated with autistic behaviors in preschoolers, and whether alcohol use or smoking modified these associations. This study included 18,664 children aged 3-6 years in southern China. Parents reported seven types of major life events before or during pregnancy. Autistic behaviors were assessed by the Clancy Autism Behavior Scale. Logistic regression was applied to evaluate the associations of parental major life events with the risk of autistic behaviors, along with the modifying effects of

Smoking Among U.S. Service Members Following Transition From Military to Veteran Status.

Smoking rates among U.S. Service members and veterans have been consistently higher than in civilian populations. While much has been published about tobacco use in both military and veteran populations, smoking patterns during transition from military to veteran status remains unclear. We studied military members participating in the Millennium Cohort Study, who separated from their respective Services between baseline and first follow-up survey (N = 5,510). Two generalized estimating equation models were used to examine any association between smoking status and time to military separation (

Coping strategies among patients with malignant lymphoma- a qualitative study from the perspectives of Swedish patients.

PURPOSE: There is a dearth of research on coping strategies of patients with malignant lymphoma. The aim of this article is to explore how these patients cope with cancer in everyday life. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine patients in Sweden. A thematic analysis was made, inspired by Antonovsky's theory of sense of coherence. The SRQR checklist was used. RESULTS: Patient's coping strategies are shown within three themes: 'Life experiences supported coping strategies during treatment', 'Between completed treatment and (possible) cure', and 'Illness brought closeness

Painful Life Events in Psychiatric Disorders: A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis.

We reported in a previous study the painful events experienced in the past in subjects with schizophrenia or major depression, in comparison to controls, and related them to the experimental pain sensitivity, anxiety, and the diagnosis. We present here the detailed analysis of these past painful events, with the aim of determining whether schizophrenic, depressive and control groups are qualitatively (type of painful events experienced, emotional or sensory components associated with pain) and quantitatively (duration, severity, and intensity) comparable concerning their past painful experienc

Childhood social adversity and risk of depressive symptoms in adolescence in a US national sample.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood social adversity has been associated with an increased risk of depression and other psychiatric disorders in adolescence and early adulthood. However, the role of timing and accumulation of adversities has not yet been established in longitudinal studies. We examined the association between childhood adversities and adolescent depressive symptoms, and the impact of timing and accumulation of adversity. METHOD: Longitudinal data were obtained from the Child Development Supplement to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (n=2223), a nationally representative survey of US famil
