PURPOSE: Various external fixation systems for lower extremity long bone deformities have been used to various degrees of success, while newer mechanical lengthening nail (MLN) systems offer the potential for improved patient outcomes. Proponents of MLNs argue that they reduce the number of operations, infectious complications, and improve quality of life; however, the evidence to support these claims is scant. This systematic review aims to evaluate the optimal lengthening system for treating post-traumatic long bone deformity.
METHODS: The systematic review was conducted in accordance with

A major rise in the prevalence and impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is projected in the coming decades, resulting from increasing life expectancy, thus leading to substantially increased healthcare costs. While brain disfunctions at the time of diagnosis are irreversible, it is widely accepted that AD pathology develops decades before clinical symptoms onset. If incipient processes can be detected early in the disease progression, prospective intervention for preventing or slowing the disease can be designed. Currently, there is no noninvasive biomarker available to detect and monitor early

The serotonergic system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are crucially involved in the regulation of emotions. Specifically, spontaneous and/or environmentally mediated modulations of the functionality of these systems early in development may favour the onset of depressive- and anxiety-related phenotypes. While the independent contribution of each of these systems to the emergence of abnormal phenotypes has been detailed in clinical and experimental studies, only rarely has their interaction been systematically investigated. Here, we addressed the effects of reduced serotonin

Acute liver failure (ALF) is an uncommon disorder that leads to jaundice, coagulopathy, and multisystem organ failure. Its definition is based on the timing from onset of jaundice to encephalopathy. In 2005, ALF accounted for 6% of liver-related deaths and 7% of orthotopic liver transplants (OLT) in the United States. Several classification systems have been developed for ALF, with the King's College criteria most widely used for prediction of OLT. Specific diagnostic tests should be implemented to identify the cause of ALF, which will help to determine its treatment and prognosis. Viral hepat

OBJECTIVES: Frailty negatively impacts quality of life and increases pressure on healthcare systems. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a nurse-led Frailty Prevention Care Management Program (FPCMP-Old Age), based on the Chronic Care Model (CCM), on frailty and functional health in community-dwelling older adults. The program integrated participants performed total resistance exercise (TRX) exercises, nutrition support, and self-management strategies within a community nursing framework.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental, single-blind design with a non-equivalent control group was used.

BACKGROUND: The biopsychosocial (BPS) model is widely endorsed as best practice in musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy. However, its implementation often remains constrained by biomedical assumptions, with psychosocial approaches primarily used to improve adherence, reduce symptoms, or restore function. As a result, contemporary BPS practice risks becoming "biomedical-plus" care rather than a genuinely integrated approach.
MAIN MESSAGE: We argue that physiotherapists can move toward a more authentic application of the BPS model through three interconnected foundational conditions - the 3Cs: p

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder marked by progressive deterioration in both motor and non-motor function. In advanced stages, patients commonly experience motor fluctuations, including unpredictable "off" episodes that severely affect quality of life. Apomorphine, a potent dopamine receptor agonist administered subcutaneously-either as intermittent injections or continuous infusion-offers rapid and effective relief during these episodes. Despite its therapeutic value, apomorphine remains underutilized due to barriers such as limited awareness, initiation comple

MOTIVATION: Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are Mendelian conditions of high phenotypic complexity and low incidence. They usually manifest in toddlers and infants, although they can also occur much later in life. Information about PIDs is often widely scattered throughout the clinical as well as the research literature and hard to find for both generalists as well as experienced clinicians. Semantic Web technologies coupled to clinical information systems can go some way toward addressing this problem. Ontologies are a central component of such a system, containing and centralizing k

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Huntington's disease (HD) requires high-quality care to reduce disruption of the patient system, prevent crisis situations, and prevent early admission in a nursing home. In the Netherlands, case management has been available for the last to 9 years for people with HD. However, there is a notable gap in understanding experiences and beliefs of HD patients regarding case managers' care, guidance, and support for quality of life. To improve the international quality of care for people with HD, insight in experiences of ambulatory HD patients with the care, guidance, and suppo

PROGRESS: Over the past decade, the world has made policy progress for newborns including the first global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.2 (< 12 neonatal deaths per 1000 live births) and the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP). However, gaps remain for investment and action, especially for babies born too soon, too small, or who become sick. An estimated 20-30 million newborns have life-threatening conditions requiring hospital care each year. Annually, approximately 2.3 million newborns die during the neonatal period, the majority being preterm. A further 1 million newborn survivor

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has imposed a radical change in daily life and work routine. In this context, health systems have suffered important and serious repercussions in all fields. Among the changes brought about by the state of global health emergency, adjustments to guidelines, priorities, structures, professional teams, and epidemiological data stand out. In light of this, the oncological field has witnessed several changes in the approach to cancer, whether due to delay in diagnosis, screening deficit, personnel shortage or the psychological impact that the pandem

BACKGROUND: Significant comorbidities, advanced age, and a poor performance status prevent surgery and systemic treatment for many patients with localized (non-metastatic) pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). These patients are currently treated with 'best supportive care'. Therefore, it is desirable to find a treatment option which could improve both disease control and quality of life in these patients. A brief course of high-dose high-precision radiotherapy i.e. stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) may be feasible.

Background/Objectives: Diclofenac (DCF) and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for pain and inflammation management; however, their clinical significance is limited by poor aqueous solubility, short biological half-life, and dose-dependent gastrointestinal, renal, and cardiovascular adverse effects. Nanocarrier-based delivery systems have been extensively explored because they can enhance the apparent solubility of poorly water-soluble NSAIDs, provide controlled and sustained drug release, prolong systemic circulation, and improve drug localization at the site

INTRODUCTION: Shared decision-making is the cornerstone of patient-centered care. However, evidence suggests that the application of shared decision-making in physical therapy practice is limited. To elicit shared decision-making and thereby potentially improve patient outcomes for patients with intermittent claudication, we developed a decision support system. This decision support system provides personalized outcomes forecasts that visualize the estimated walking distance of an individual patient. We hypothesize that personalized outcomes forecasts can support physical therapists in persona

BACKGROUND: Quit for new life (QFNL) is a smoking cessation initiative developed to support mothers of Aboriginal babies to quit smoking during pregnancy. The state-wide initiative provides support for pregnant women and their households including free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and follow up cessation advice. Services are also supported to implement systems-level changes and integrate QFNL into routine care. This study aimed to evaluate: (1) models of implementation of QFNL; (2) the uptake of QFNL; (3) the impact of QFNL on smoking behaviours; and (4) stakeholder perceptions of the in
