Five hundred and thirty-nine patients with carcinoma of the breast treated with total axillary dissection and with positive axillary nodes were evaluated. The total number of lymph nodes removed was 11,082, with an average of 20.5 nodes per patient. The average number of lymph nodes at the first level was 13.8, at the second level 4.5, at the third level 2.2. The average number of nodes was 20.7 in cases treated with Halsted mastectomy, 20.9 with total mastectomy and axillary dissection, 20.3 with quadrantectomy and axillary dissection. An analysis of 5-year end results of the surgical treatment of 444 patients with peripheral cancer of the lung failed to establish any correlation between tumor size and prognosis in cases of lymph node involvement. We reviewed the frequency of intrathoracic metastases of prostatic cancer at initial presentation in 1,435 patients seen from 1968 to 1978. Of these patients 75 (5.2 per cent) had intrathoracic metastases, including nodular metastases in 60 (4.2 per cent), mediastinal adenopathy in 9 (0.6 per cent), mediastinal adenopathy and pulmonary nodules in 3 (0.2 per cent), and lymphangitic pulmonary metastases in 3 (0.2 per cent). A 13-year-old Coloured girl presented with an abdominal mass and a small-bowel obstruction. At operation a constricting carcinoma of the caecum which had spread to the regional lymph nodes was found. Histological examination revealed that it was a mucinous adenocarcinoma.

Gallium-67 citrate scanning was prospectively evaluated in 55 patients who had lung lesions suspected to be primary carcinoma on chest x-ray films and in whom subsequent histologic diagnosis was obtained. Of 47 patients with histologically proved carcinoma of the lung, 44 (94 per cent) had a positive 67Ga scan. No patient with a positive scan had a benign lesion, so that the positive scan accuracy rate was 100 per cent. All 8 patients with a benign lesion and 3 patients with a malignant lesion had negative scans, for a negative scan accurary rate of 72 per cent for benign lesions. These result

Fifty five postoperative preparations were studied morphologically after radical surgery for rectal cancer. The distal intramural spread of adenocarcinoma was noted in 18.5 per cent. Orthograde lymphnodes were involved in 43.1%, retrograde ones - in 18%. The tumor growth in perirectal cellular tissue was manifested mainly in the area of the principal tumor. The safe level of rectum cutting is 4.5cm down the tumor. It is recommended to take into a careful consideration the limits of intra- and extramural spread of tumor for the performance of sphincter-preserving operations.

Since 1965, 103 patients with testicular neoplasms have been evaluated with lymphangiography for evidence of retroperitoneal disease. Thirty-five patients with testicular carcinomas had lymphadenectomies; corroboration of their initial lymphangiographic interpretaions with the surgical specimens was possible. There was an overall 79% (26 of 33) correlation. We feel that even with relatively inexperienced examiners, lymphangiography can be a useful means of evaluating the retroperitoneum.
