A Review of Computer-Aided Diagnostic Algorithms for Cervical Neoplasia and an Assessment of Their Applicability to Female Genital Schistosomiasis.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) affects an estimated 56 million women and girls in Africa. Nevertheless, this neglected tropical disease remains largely understudied and underdiagnosed. In this literature review, we examine the effectiveness of published computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) algorithms for cervical cancer that use colposcopy images and assess their applicability to the design of an automated image diagnostic algorithm for FGS. We searched 2 databases (Embase and MEDLINE) from database inception to June 10, 2022. We identified 393 studies, of which 13 were relevant for FGS diagn…

Microbiota and seminal quality: A systematic review.

The microbiota is composed of numerous resident microorganisms, which contribute to the health and illness of the individual. When the microbiota is in dysbiosis, it can cause some pathological processes and in men it can be correlated with male infertility, so the present study does a systematic review, identifying whether there is a correlation between the microbiota and seminal quality. We analyzed 7 papers published in PubMed, Medline and the Cochrane library databases, in English and published between 2012 and 2022. In men with normal semen parameters, a higher prevalence of Lactobacillus…

Emergency Gastrectomy for Oesophageal and Gastric Polyps With Massive Bleeding Induced by Anticoagulation.

We report the management dilemma of a patient with known gastric polyposis requiring anticoagulation for a submassive pulmonary embolism and haemodynamic compromise. This occurred in a comorbid patient with iron deficiency anaemia and previous venous thromboembolism. The patient had repeated episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding post-thrombolysis for which the cause was not seen on gastroscopy and required an emergency gastrectomy to control the bleeding. A keyword search was done across Scopus, PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase; in the case of gastric polyposis causing significant bleeding, current…

METHOD: We performed a systematic literature review on several databases: PubMed®/MEDLINE, PMC, Crossref.org, and Web of Science in the last 10 years. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Women of reproductive age with primary or sec…

One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass and Risk of Cancer.

The one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) is a recent procedure, which still raises controversies concerning its presumed role in the genesis of biliary reflux and the risk of developing esophageal or gastric cancer. A review of the literature in order to have evidence in favor of or against the risk of cancer after OAGB. We have conducted a review of the English literature using the MEDLINE database. The theoretical risk of asymptomatic chronic biliary reflux after OAGB exists and may be responsible for gastroesophageal cancer. It is justified to indicate OAGB for patients over 50 years of ag…

Fractionated CO2 laser skin rejuvenation.

Fractional photothermolysis has been reported in the literature to improve both the pigmentary and textural changes associated with photoaging. The objective of the study was to review the literature of non-ablative fractional laser (NAFL) and ablative fractional laser (AFL) resurfacing for the treatment of photoaging. This is a review of the Medline literature evaluating NAFL and AFL for photoaging. Review of the literature supports the use of NAFL and AFL as safe and effective treatments for photoaging. It is likely that the controlled, limited dermal heating of fractional resurfacing initia…

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease presenting as nonconvulsive status epilepticus case report and review of the literature.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is the most common transmissible human spongiform encephalopathy. Seizures and status epilepticus (SE) are an uncommon finding in CJD. We report a 64-year-old woman with rapid cognitive decline who had electroencephalographic (EEG) changes suggestive of nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). She was later diagnosed with sporadic CJD (sCJD). We also reviewed the literature for published cases on this topic. MEDLINE was employed to identify all published reports of CJD and SE. We identified 8 references with a total of 12 cases with CJD and NCSE. sCJD should be …
