Patient and navigator experiences with the opioid use disorder treatment system in Philadelphia, PA.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, 1413 people in Philadelphia died of an unintentional drug overdose. Addressing the complex challenges within the opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment system requires a comprehensive grasp of multiple system-level siloes from the perspective of patients who are accessing services and certified recovery specialists. Identifying facilitators and barriers to treatment entry and retention are critical. METHODS: We conducted 13 focus groups with 70 people with a history of opioid use in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The study recruited participants from non-profit organizations, O

Health system challenges affecting rehabilitation services in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that access to rehabilitation is a human right. To date, however, rehabilitation in South Africa has not been a health priority. The focus has rather been on saving lives from communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDs and TB, which has been increasingly successful. Whilst more South Africans are now living with pharmacologically managed chronic, communicable diseases, they often suffer significant challenges to their physical and mental health. Moreover, there are many health conditions in South Africa that have not attracted as much atte

Perceptions and drivers of healthcare provider and drug dispenser practices for the treatment of malaria in pregnancy in the context of multiple first-line therapies in western Kenya: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Emergence of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to artemether-lumefantrine in Africa prompted the pilot introduction of multiple first-line therapies (MFT) against malaria in Kenya, potentially exposing women-of-childbearing-age (WOCBAs) to anti-malarials with unknown safety profiles in the first trimester. This qualitative study explored knowledge and perceptions among healthcare providers providing malaria treatment to WOCBAs and pregnant women. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with purposively selected public and private health facility (HF) and drug outlet (DO) provid

Medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in Canada: practical aspects for healthcare teams.

In this paper we document some of the practical aspects of implementing medical assistance in dying (MAiD) since it became legal in Canada in 2016. The percentage of annual deaths in Canada due to MAiD varies widely, ranging from less than 0.5% in some areas to over 5% in others. By the end of 2019, approximately 13,000 people had an assisted death in Canada (1.6% of all deaths). The average age is 73 years and the majority have cancer (64%), followed by end-stage organ failure (17%), and neurological disease (11%). The safeguards in Canadian law include having two witnesses sign the patient r

Interventions to Improve Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence Among Adolescents and Youth in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review 2015-2019.

Adolescents and youth living with HIV have poorer antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence and viral suppression outcomes than all other age groups. Effective interventions promoting adherence are urgently needed. We reviewed and synthesized recent literature on interventions to improve ART adherence among this vulnerable population. We focus on studies conducted in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) where the adolescent and youth HIV burden is greatest. Articles published between September 2015 and January 2019 were identified through PubMed. Inclusion criteria were: [1] included partici

Burnout combating strategies, triggers, implications, and self-coping mechanisms among nurses working in Saudi Arabia: a multicenter, mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined burnout as an occupational phenomenon resulting from unsuccessfully managed chronic workplace stress. The well-being of healthcare professionals is the foundation for the health of patients and organizations. In Saudi Arabia, nursing plays a pivotal role in the healthcare sector, with both local and expatriate nurses taking part in various clinical and high-pressure services. However, rapid growth in healthcare facilities, staff shortages, and patient loads are adversely impacting stress levels among nurses. METHODS: This study used

Oral iron supplements for children in malaria-endemic areas.

RATIONALE: Iron deficiency anaemia is a common nutritional disorder among children in malaria-endemic regions and is associated with adverse developmental and health outcomes. However, concerns have been raised that iron supplementation might increase the risk of malaria by enhancing parasite growth, particularly in areas lacking adequate malaria prevention and treatment services. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects and safety of iron supplementation, with or without folic acid, in children living in areas with hyperendemic or holoendemic malaria transmission, where malaria is intense and occ

Differences in Medicaid Antipsychotic Medication Measures Among Children with SSI, Foster Care, and Income-Based Aid.

BACKGROUND: Concerns about antipsychotic prescribing for children, particularly those enrolled in Medicaid and with Supplemental Security Income (SSI), continue despite recent calls for selective use within established guidelines. OBJECTIVES: To (a) examine the application of 6 quality measures for antipsychotic medication prescribing in children and adolescents receiving Medicaid and (b) understand distinctive patterns across eligibility categories in order to inform ongoing quality management efforts to support judicious antipsychotic use. METHODS: Using data for 10 states from the 2008 Me

Oral anticoagulation with vitamin K inhibitors and determinants of successful self-management in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Self-management may be an option to monitor oral anticoagulant therapy in health systems, but before recommending it, we need to assess patients' ability to take on this task. The purpose of the study was to describe patients' ability to self-manage and associated factors. METHODS: This was a 3-year prospective quasi-experimental study with a control group. Overall, 333 patients on anticoagulant therapy from seven primary care health centres of the Basque Health Service were included in the intervention group and followed up for 6 months after the intervention, assessing their abi

Rebuilding health and human services: a call to strategic planning and action.

The capacity of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been substantially reduced since early 2025. This has included staffing cuts on a scale not seen in decades, delays in implementing billions of dollars in grants, and other disruptions to normal operations, all of which have received considerable public coverage and attention. To date, far less public attention has been given to rebuilding efforts. This commentary presents recommendations for rebuilding HHS' lost capacity, following a series of roundtable discussions convened by a network of former senior HHS appointees

Epidemiological situation of transboundary animal diseases in North African countries-proposition of a regional control strategy.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) defined transboundary animal diseases (TADs) as those that are of significant economic, trade, and food security importance for a considerable number of countries. TADs can easily spread to other countries, reach epidemic proportions, and where control, management, or exclusion is required cooperation between several countries. The North African countries are vulnerable to several TADs by virtue of its geographical location, its borders with the Sahel region, and peculiar control constraints on the budgets of the national veterinary services of each
