Clear Cell Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Upper Lip -A Rare Case Report.

Myoepithelial carcinomas are quite infrequent neoplasms and coupled with their diverse morphological appearance are interesting as far as diagnosis and management is concerned. They account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The variable morphologic appearance of myoepithelial carcinoma leads to a wide differential diagnosis, including primary salivary gland tumors and metastatic tumors. The prognosis of these tumors is not fair as they are locally aggressive and approximately one third of the patients die of the pathology. We report a case of clear cell variant of myoepithelial ca

Odontogenic myxoma: a clinicopathological study in a South African population.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic myxoma is a benign, locally aggressive neoplasm of the jaws. Prevalence rates range between 0.5% and 17.7% of odontogenic tumours. There are few reports in the literature on this lesion in African populations, and therefore, this study aimed to report on odontogenic myxoma in a South African population over a 40-year period. METHODS: The clinical records and orthopantomograms of 29 histopathologically diagnosed odontogenic myxoma were retrospectively analysed. Details of age, gender, ethnic origin and clinical, histological as well as radiological features were recorde

Oral manifestations of neurofibromatosis type 1 in children with facial plexiform neurofibroma: report of three cases.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common autosomal genetic disorder with a prevalence of 1 in 3,000 births. NF1 is a complex syndrome characterized by many abnormalities and may affect all organ systems. Oral manifestations of NF1 occur frequently, but reports including NF1 children with facial plexiform neurofibromas and oral alterations are scant. Facial plexiform neurofibroma may cause asymmetry, disfigurement and usually arises from the trigeminal nerve. The aim of this paper is to to report three pediatric NF1 cases with facial plexiform neurofibroma presenting with oral manifestations,

Delayed soft tissue recurrence after treatment of ameloblastoma in a black African: case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastoma is rare worldwide. Delayed treatment can result in significant morbidity from facial deformity and infiltration of adjacent tissues. Mortality can occur from invasion of vital structures in the head and neck, super infection, recurrent and even distant metastases. Recurrence after radical treatment is not common. CASE REPORT: This paper presents a case of soft issue recurrence in the chin 21 years after radical resection of the mandible for ameloblastoma. The iliac crest bone grafted to the site was not involved in the tumour recurrence. Conclusion. Radical surgica

Primary intraosseous squamous carcinoma. Report of two cases.

Two cases of primary intraosseous squamous carcinoma (PIOSC) are reported. One PIOSC is in the mandible of a 24-year-old man and appears to be a keratinizing PIOSC arising de novo. The other PIOSC presented in the edentulous maxilla of a 56-year-old man and was diagnosed as a PIOSC arising from an odontogenic cyst. The 2nd tumor subsequently metastasized to a cervical lymph node. Previous reports have noted a favorable prognosis for PIOC arising in odontogenic cysts, and only 3 other instances of metastases of a PIOSC in an odontogenic cyst have been documented.

Head, neck, and maxillofacial childhood Burkitt's lymphoma: a retrospective analysis of 31 patients.

Thirty-one children with Burkitt's lymphoma of the head, neck, and maxillofacial region diagnosed between 1976 and 1988 were reviewed. The age range was 2 to 17 years (median, 7.2 years), and 77.4% were males. The most common presenting symptoms were detectable masses, floating and/or painful teeth, enlarged cervical lymph nodes, sore throat, and neurologic signs. The predominant primary tumor sites were the jaws and tonsils. All patients were staged by a clinical staging system, 17 of them having stage I-II, and 14 stage III-IV. Levels of lactate dehydrogenase and ferritin were the only signi

Changing Trends in Benign Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Related Epithelial Neoplasms of the Oral Cavity: 1995-2015.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related benign papillary epithelial neoplasms are common lesions affecting any region of the oral cavity. This study evaluated the trends in frequency, location, and demographics of these lesions over 20 years in a large biopsy service. Following IRB approval, the archives of UF Oral Pathology Biopsy Service between 1995 and 2015 were queried. Cases diagnosed as squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris, and condyloma acuminatum were included. Extraoral locations, inconclusive diagnoses, or syndrome-related HPV lesions were excluded. Age, gender, location, clinical presen

β-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin-Secreting Giant Cell Tumor of Bone in the Mandible: Case Report and Comprehensive Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a rare but locally aggressive neoplasm which most commonly arises in the epiphyses of long bones of young adults. Occurrence in the mandible is uncommon, and hormone secreting variants are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 16-year-old female, who presented with progressive swelling and pain in the left mandible after extraction of adjacent teeth. On examination, she had a large ulcerated intraoral mass with marked tooth mobility; imaging revealed a 4.7-cm expansive lytic lesion with cortical erosions and displacement o

Desmoplastic fibroma of the jaw: A case report and review of the literature.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare benign bone tumor adopting an aggressive behavior, representing a challenge for clinical and radiographic diagnosis. This case report focused on a 31-year-old man with a large mandibular lesion with severe displacements of the mandibular teeth. Only a combination of paraclinical findings allows a definitive diagnosis to be made. Cervicofacial MRI revealed a low T1 signal intensity with peripheral enhancement after Gadolinium, and T2 hyperintense signal, while PET scan showed a moderate metabolism. Bone biopsy with immunohistochemical analysis allowed for def

Symphyseal-Sparing Mandibulectomy for Canine Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma in Dogs: 35 Cases.

Canine acanthomatous ameloblastoma (CAA) has been reported to be the most prevalent odontogenic tumor in dogs. The most common location of this tumor is the rostral mandible. Symphyseal-sparing mandibulectomy has been shown to be an effective technique to maintain mandibular continuity and promote early return to function. In this retrospective study, 35 dogs with CAA associated with a mandibular canine tooth were evaluated following a symphyseal-sparing rostral mandibulectomy. Dogs with intraoperative transection of the canine tooth root and subsequent root fragment extraction were included.

Intraoral surgical treatment of large complex odontoma with technology support in planning.

Complex odontoma or odontogenic hamartoma is the most common odontogenic tumor, diagnosed mainly in the first two decades of life, rarely exceeding 3 cm. This paper aim is report a clinical case of complex odontoma in the retromolar region that could induce an imminent risk of mandibular fracture. The patient reported local pain, discomfort, an area with hardened edema and absence of the lower right second molar. Using computed tomography, a three-dimensional model was printed and a mandibular reconstruction plate 2.4 mm pre-bent. Through intraoral access, osteotomy was performed to remove the

Placement of a customised load-bearing titanium plate for prevention of iatrogenic mandibular fracture in surgical removal of odontogenic keratocyst recurrence.

A 72-year-old woman with a history of removal of a right hemimandibular keratocyst 10 years ago was referred to our attention for a large swelling of the right cheek. The orthopantomography and the CT scan showed a huge osteolytic area of the right mandibular ramus and angle. The patient's refusal to resection and reconstruction with a free flap pushed us towards a conservative treatment. The high probability of a iatrogenic mandibular fracture during and after surgery required the design of a customised titanium plate to be preliminary placed through cervical incision along the posterior bord

Ameloblastic Fibro-Odontoma Misidentified as an Enamel Pearl.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, benign, and mixed odontogenic tumor that consists of both ectodermal and mesenchymal elements. AFO is more prevalent in young children and adolescents than in adults and is usually found in the molar area associated with a failure of tooth eruption. The purpose of this report is to discuss the differential diagnosis and treatment of a three-year-old girl diagnosed with an AFO around a primary canine. The manifestations of the lesion resembled localized periodontal disease caused by an enamel pearl. Excision and curettage were done and the separated
