Spinal hydatidosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: To revise the treatment of spinal hydatidosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: About 50% of cases of bone hydatidosis are spinal. METHODS: Twenty patients with spinal hydatidosis were treated. There were 13 men and 7 women, with a mean age of 53.1 years. The median follow-up was 4.8 years. The infected area was the cervical spine in 1 patient, the dorsal spine in 7, the lumbar spine in 7, and the sacrum in 5. Curettage and resection of the infected bone were performed. The spine was exposed posteriorly in all but 2 patients. An additional posterior

[Selective vs. mass treatment with antihelminthic drugs: experience in two hyperendemic communities].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted nematode infection among children from two hyperendemic communities who were treated with antihelminthic drugs under two different regimens: selective or individual treatment was administered to members of one of the communities, and repeated mass treatment was given to the control community. METHODS: The study population was comprised of 909 children of both sexes between the ages of 2 and 13 from two peri-urban communities: Las Lomas and El Abastos, both in Santa Fe, Argentina. A prospective, longitudinal, quasi-experime

Human Ascariasis: An Updated Review.

BACKGROUND: Ascaris lumbricoides is the most common helminthic infection. More than 1.2 billion people have ascariasis worldwide. OBJECTIVE … if they are asymptomatic, to prevent complications from migration of the parasite. Albendazole and mebendazole are the drugs of choice for children and nonpregnant individuals with ascariasis. Pregnant women with ascariasis should be treated with pyrantel pamoate. Recent patents related to the management of ascariasis are also discussed. CONCLUSION: The ave …

Soil-transmitted helminth infection in school age children in Sierra Leone after a decade of preventive chemotherapy interventions.

BACKGROUND: Baseline mapping of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections among school age children (SAC) in 2008-2009 found high or moderate prevalence in 13 of the 14 districts in Sierra Leone. Following these surveys, mass drug administration (MDA) of mebendazole/albendazole was conducted biannually at national level targeting pre-school children (PSC) aged 12-59 months and intermittently at sub-national level targeting SAC. In addition, MDA with ivermectin and albendazole for eliminating lymphatic filariasis (LF) has been conducted nationwide since 2010 targeting individuals over 5 years …

Treatment with albendazole or mebendazole was generally effective, with comparable outcomes between agents; however, delayed diagnosis was associated with severe complications and occasional mortality. Risk profiling and efficacy of albendazole against the hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma ceylanicum in Cambodia to support control programs in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific.

Background: Hookworm disease is endemic throughout many parts of the Asia Pacific, despite targeted control programs of at-risk populations. The success of these programs has been hindered by the limited efficacy of widely-used mebendazole, rapid re-infection rates linked to persistent reservoirs of untreated people and dogs, and the low sensitivity of conventional coprodiagnostic techniques employed. Methods: Here, we used standard faecal flotation (SFF) and a multiplex qPCR (mqPCR) assay to calculate and compare species-specific cure and egg reduction rates of single dose albendazole (400 mg…

Myocarditis and Raw Meat Consumption: Strange Bedfellows!

Trichinellosis is a parasitic infection that is associated with the consumption of raw meat. The specific genotype Trichinella nativa has been found in raw bear meat. The most common genotype that has been linked with myocarditis is T spiralis. We present a case of T nativa myocarditis secondary to consumption of raw bear meat. The clinical manifestations as well as therapy of this specific genotype is outlined.

Effect of four rounds of annual school-wide mass praziquantel treatment for schistosoma mansoni control on schistosome-specific immune responses.

This study evaluated potential changes in antischistosome immune responses in children from schools that received 4 rounds of annual mass drug administration (MDA) of praziquantel (PZQ). In a repeated cross-sectional study design, 210 schistosome egg-positive children were recruited at baseline from schools in western Kenya (baseline group). Another 251 children of the same age range were recruited from the same schools and diagnosed with schistosome infection by microscopy (post-MDA group). In-vitro schistosome-specific cytokines and plasma antibody levels were measured by ELISA and compared

[Up-to-date approaches in treatment of hydatid disease of the liver in childhood].

Sixty children (age 3-15 years) with hydatid disease of the liver were treated. The patients were divided into 2 equal groups (control and main groups). The hydatid disease of the liver was revealed in 22 (33.6%) patients, combined hydatid disease of the liver and lung were noted in 38 (66.4%) patients. The "capitonnage" of the residual cavity was applied in the control group and omentoplasty--in the main group. Chemotherapy with Nemazol (dose 10-15 mg/kg/day) was carried out. In order to reduce the negative influence of Nemazol on patients and to accelerate reparation processes of liver parenc

Primary echinococcus infestation of the bone and muscles.

Hydatid diseases of the bone and muscles are rare, generally are incurable, and have a high level of recurrence. We attempted to ascertain whether the recurrence rate decreased in patients with hydatid disease infestation of the bone and skeletal muscle who were treated with current surgical techniques and antihelminthic chemotherapy, and whether the outcomes for bone infestation were different when compared with outcomes for muscular infestation. We retrospectively reviewed 15 patients with hydatid disease of the bone (eight patients) and muscle (seven patients). The average followup was 30 m

Occult enteric infection by Ancylostoma caninum: a previously unrecognized zoonosis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Human disease caused by the canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum and a high incidence of eosinophilic enteritis have been reported from northern Queensland, Australia.
