AIMS: The treatment of perforating esophageal foreign body impaction (FBI) is complex and unclear. We present the outcome of surgical treatment of esophageal perforations due to FBI in children along with a management algorithm.
METHODS: During a period of 7 years, 7 cases of esophageal perforations due to foreign body (FB) ingestion were referred to our unit. We analyzed the FB types, lodging duration and location, complications, and the surgical approaches.
RESULTS: There were 4 male and 3 female patients. Mean age was 28 months (5 months-6 years). Six patients had metal FBs of variable sh

BACKGROUND: Hyperinflation of the native lung (NLH) is a known complication to single-lung transplantation for emphysema. The hyperinflation can lead to compression of the graft and cause respiratory failure. Endobronchial valves have been used to block airflow in specific parts of the native lung, reducing the native lung volume and relieving the graft.
OBJECTIVE: We report short-term follow-up and safety from 14 single-lung transplant patients with NLH treated with bronchoscopic lung volume reduction using endobronchial valves.
METHODS: Retrospective clinical information related to endobro

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency ablation has became a validated therapeutic technique for symptomatic drug refractory atrial fibrillation (AF). Cardiac computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate left atrial (LA) anatomy in order to improve AF ablation. The analysis of noncardiac structures during cardiac CT may identify clinically significant incidental findings (IFs). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of IF in patients undergoing AF catheter ablation.
METHODS: Between February 2008 and March 2010, all patients planned for a first procedure of AF or LA tachycardia (LAT)

Introduction: An association between pneumorrhachis and asthma exacerbation is uncommon. However, we present a clinical case involving a patient with exacerbated asthma, subcutaneous emphysema, spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM), and pneumorrhachis. Case study: The patient was an 18-year-old male with asthma since childhood who only relied on salbutamol to control his asthma symptoms. Results: The patient suddenly experienced dyspnea, chest tightness, and paroxysmal coughing, which prompted him to visit the emergency department. Upon arrival, subcutaneous emphysema was detected on the face, n

BACKGROUND: A rarely used technique for enabling closure of large ventral hernias with loss of domain is preoperative progressive pneumoperitoneum (PPP), which uses intermittent insufflation to gradually stretch the contracted abdominal wall muscles, increasing the capacity of the abdominal cavity. This allows the re-introduction of herniated viscera into the abdominal cavity and assists in closure of giant hernias which may otherwise be considered inoperable.
METHODS: This was a prospective study assessing 16 patients between 2013 and 2015 with multi-recurrent ventral hernia. All patients we

Background Chest X-rays (CXRs) are widely used for cost-effective screening of active pulmonary tuberculosis despite their limitations in sensitivity and specificity when interpreted by clinicians or radiologists. To address this issue, computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithms, particularly deep learning architectures based on convolution, have been developed to automate the analysis of radiography imaging. Deep learning algorithms have shown promise in accurately classifying lung abnormalities using chest X-ray images. In this study, we utilized the EfficientNet B4 model, which was pre-train

Cerebral air embolism (CAE) is a rare cause of stroke. Most cerebral air emboli are caused by iatrogenic factors, such as invasive cardiac and pulmonary procedures. Here, we report an unusual case of CAE not related to any medical intervention. An 87-year-old woman became unresponsive after vomiting. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the head 6 hours after the onset of the vomiting revealed multiple air emboli, mainly in the watershed area between the right anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Magnetic resonance imaging with T2* gradient echo showed the air emboli as granular hypointensitie

Emphysematous lung cysts are considered to be a risk factor for the development of lung cancer, and there have been several reports of lung cancer cases that have developed in conjunction with large lung cysts. Emphysematous lung cysts are more common in heavy smokers, and it has been pointed out that early detection is difficult because the lung mass shadow overlaps with the lung cyst, so they are often detected in an advanced state. We report a case of this disease that was discovered incidentally. The patient was a 51-year-old man. During a health checkup, he was found to have a right lung

PURPOSE: The Esophageal-Tracheal Combitube (Combitube) is widely used for the management of the airway during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the pre-hospital setting. Although serious complications have been reported with the Combitube, there is a paucity of data relative to the frequency and nature of such complications. The objective of this retrospective study was to determine the incidence and the nature of complications associated to the Combitube in the pre-hospital setting.

Controversy still exists concerning the diagnosis and treatment of congenital lobar emphysema (CLE). Although surgical removal of the affected lobe is the most commonly accepted form of treatment, detection of milder or even asymptomatic cases is usually followed by a more conservative management of patients, i. e. non-surgical treatment and follow-up. We therefore decided to evaluate our patients with CLE, placing special emphasis on treatment and diagnostic techniques. We also evaluated quantitative analyses of alveolar diameters. Fourteen children with CLE were analysed retrospectively, inc
