Vulnerability to memory decline in aging - a mega-analysis of structural brain change.

Brain atrophy is a key factor behind episodic memory loss in aging, but the nature and ubiquity of this relationship remains poorly understood. This study leveraged 13 longitudinal datasets, including 3,737 cognitively healthy adults (10,343 MRI scans; 13,460 memory assessments), to determine whether brain change-memory change associations are more pronounced with age and genetic risk for Alzheimer's Disease. Both factors are associated with accelerated brain decline, yet it remains unclear whether memory loss is exacerbated beyond what atrophy alone would predict. Additionally, we assessed wh

Dietary inflammatory index and memory function: population-based national sample of elderly Americans.

The objective of this study was to examine the association between dietary inflammatory potential and memory and cognitive functioning among a representative sample of the US older adult population. Cross-sectional data from the 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were utilised to identify an aggregate sample of adults 60-85 years of age (n 1723). Dietary inflammatory index (DII®) scores were calculated using 24-h dietary recall interviews. Three memory-related assessments were employed, including the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disea

Understanding the neuropsychological syndrome of dementia.

The syndrome of dementia is most commonly caused by Alzheimer's disease (AD), an age-related neurodegenerative process that primarily affects the cortex. Approximately 4 million Americans carry the diagnosis, and the number is expected to rise to 14 million by the year 2040. Affected individuals suffer multiple cognitive deficits that progressively affect the ability to communicate. Typically the earliest symptom is impairment of episodic memory, but other forms of declarative memory are ultimately impaired. To understand the communication problems of individuals with Alzheimer's, clinicians n

Can sleep affect destination memory? A prospective narrative review.

The destination memory is the ability of individuals to remember to whom the information has been delivered. The memory system is an essential and critical piece of social communication and human social cognition. Previously, research has been done on the relationship between source memory and sleep which are critical and fundamental processes influencing our daily lives. However, this present prospective narrative review sheds light on the idea of beginning new research to understand the relationship between destination memory and sleep. Although no such literature exists that can explain thi

Memory-based similar lure rejections promote subsequent memory for relative recency.

Memory updating requires detecting changes between similar events and preserving information about their relative order. Two experiments examined whether memory-based rejection of similar lures in the Mnemonic Similarity Task supports subsequent temporal memory. Participants studied objects, completed a modified recognition test including repeated targets, similar lures, and novel foils, and then performed a relative recency test in which they selected which of two versions of the same object appeared during the previous recognition test. Recency judgments for lures were most accurate when the

Activation of mGlu2 receptors reverses persistent post-methamphetamine deficit in object-in-place recognition memory.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Persistent cognitive impairments are prevalent in methamphetamine (meth) use disorder and contribute to maladaptive decision-making and increased relapse vulnerability. There are currently no effective treatments for meth-associative cognitive deficits, and their neurobiological underpinnings remain incompletely understood. This study investigated the effects of chronic meth self-administration on episodic-like recognition memory and evaluated whether pharmacological potentiation of metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 2 (mGlu2) could rescue these deficits. METHODS:

Brain correlates of memory reconsolidation: A role for the TPJ.

In this paper, we investigate the process by which new experiences reactivate and potentially update old memories. Such memory reconsolidation appears dependent on the extent to which current experience deviates from what is predicted by the reactivated memory (i.e. prediction error). If prediction error is low, the reactivated memory is likely to be updated with new information. If it is high, however, a new, separate, memory is more likely to be formed. The temporal parietal junction TPJ has been shown across a broad range of content areas (attention, social cognition, decision making and ep

[Metabolic toxic causes of amnesic episodes (author's transl)].

To analyze disorders of memory functions, observations were made in healthy test subjects after administration of psychotropic drugs and anesthetics. In isolated cases amnesic episodes were recorded and in 8 of the subjects accurate measurements of the retrograde amnesia after propanidid anesthesia were made. The observations provided arguments for the delimitation of the immediate memory (ultra-short-term memory, one minute memory) from short-term memory and long-term memory of the conventional terminology. As a result of our investigations we came to the thesis that the transformation of the

Sensitization with Fungal Protease Allergen Establishes Long-Lived, Allergenic Th Cell Memory in the Lung.

Allergic asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Exposure to allergens produced by a variety of otherwise harmless microbes, including fungi, predisposes individuals to immunopathologic disease upon subsequent encounters with allergen. We developed a mouse model that employs a purified protease produced by Aspergillus (Asp f 13) to investigate the contributions of CD4+ Th cells to recurrent lung inflammation. Notably, memory CD4+ T cells enhanced the eosinophil response of sensitized/rechallenged animals. In addition, memory CD4+ T cells maintai

A Case of Transient Global Amnesia: A Rare Diagnosis.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a syndrome characterized by a loss of anterograde memory with a less prominent loss in retrograde episodic memory that resolves within 24 hours or less. In this report, we present a rare case of a 62-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with sudden onset confusion and memory loss. Prior to this, the patient had no significant medical or psychiatric history. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) showed a normal presentation, and a neurology consultation ruled out any organic brain abnormalities. After ruling out al

Posterior cortical atrophy variant of Alzheimer's dementia-A case report.

Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is the commonest type of dementia presenting with initial episodic memory decline followed by involvement of other cognitive domains. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is one of the variants of Alzheimer's dementia (AD) characterized by the atypical presentation of relatively persevered memory in the initial stage. PCA is an uncommon early onset dementia affecting adults between 50 and 65 years. It presents predominantly with visuo-spatial and visuo-perceptual deficits. PCA is a phenotype with varied etiology most common being Alzheimer's disease. The complex and atypi

Memory circuits: CA2.

The hippocampus is a central region in the coding of spatial, temporal and episodic memory. Recent discoveries have revealed surprising and complex roles of the small area CA2 in hippocampal function. Lesion studies have revealed that this region is required for social memory formation. Area CA2 is targeted by extra-hippocampal paraventricular inputs that release vasopressin and can act to enhance social memory performance. In vivo recordings have revealed nonconventional activity by neurons in this region that act to both initiate hippocampal sharp-wave ripple events as well as encode spatial

Distinct hippocampal functional networks revealed by tractography-based parcellation.

Recent research suggests the anterior and posterior hippocampus form part of two distinct functional neural networks. Here we investigate the structural underpinnings of this functional connectivity difference using diffusion-weighted imaging-based parcellation. Using this technique, we substantiated that the hippocampus can be parcellated into distinct anterior and posterior segments. These structurally defined segments did indeed show different patterns of resting state functional connectivity, in that the anterior segment showed greater connectivity with temporal and orbitofrontal cortex, w

Verbal Episodic Processing in Newborns.

During the first period of life, human infants rapidly and effortlessly acquire the languages they are exposed to. Although memory is central to this process, the nature of early verbal memory systems, and the factors that determine retention and forgetting, remain largely unknown. Behavioral and brain measures have demonstrated memory formation in newborns. However, word traces fade in the face of acoustic overlap, leading to interference and forgetting. Here, we investigate whether speakers' identity changes facilitate the separation into distinct acoustic episodes and the creation of non-ov

Semantic similarity among autobiographical memories is associated with rumination.

Depressive rumination is characterized by repetitive dwelling on one or more self-relevant, past-oriented topics. However, little empirical evidence links depressive rumination to the perseveration of specific themes in autobiographical memory (AM) retrieval. This study examined whether ruminators are more likely to retrieve semantically overlapping AMs across different times and locations using the experience sampling method (ESM). Participants (N = 58 Japanese-speaking university students) generated AMs in response to negative and positive cues three times daily for seven days. In total, 306

Effects of social anxiety and self-schemas on the impact and meaningfulness of positive versus negative social autobiographical memories.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety is characterized by maladaptive self-schemas about being socially undesirable. Self-schemas are deeply held beliefs which are derived from negative autobiographical memories of painful social experiences. In contrast to the plethora of past research on negative memories in social anxiety, almost no research has investigated objectively positive social autobiographical memories. In this preregistered study, we examined the effects of social anxiety and self-schemas on the appraised impact and meaningfulness of retrieved positive versus negative social autobiographical

I Feel I Remember: The Phenomenology of Autobiographical Recall in Individuals with Alcohol Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Beyond the memory deficits classically observed in individuals with alcohol use disorder (IwAUD), research has recently focused on the study of autobiographical memory (AM) processes in IwAUD by analysing the content of AM narratives, and the implications for self-conception have been discussed. However, little is known about how IwAUD subjectively experience autobiographical recall. METHODS: Thirty-seven IwAUD and 37 control participants were invited to perform an AM task that involved recalling memories for 4 life periods (2 important memories per period). Then, they assessed
