Orofacial Muscles: Embryonic Development and Regeneration after Injury.

Orofacial congenital defects such as cleft lip and/or palate are associated with impaired muscle regeneration and fibrosis after surgery. Al … Their main functions are chewing, swallowing, and speech. All orofacial muscles originate from the mesoderm of the pharyngeal arches under the control of cranial neural crest cells. Research in vertebrate models indicates that the molecular regulation of orofacial muscle development is different from that of trunk and limb muscles. In addition, the regene …

Retinoic acid regulates embryonic development of mammalian submandibular salivary glands.

Organogenesis is orchestrated by cell and tissue interactions mediated by molecular signals. Identification of relevant signals, and the tissues that generate and receive them, are important goals of developmental research. Here, we demonstrate that Retinoic Acid (RA) is a critical signaling molecule important for morphogenesis of mammalian submandibular salivary glands (SMG). By examining late stage RA deficient embryos of Rdh10 mutant mice we show that SMG development requires RA in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, we find that active RA signaling occurs in SMG tissues, arising earlier

Mouse oviduct development.

The oviduct, or Fallopian tube in humans, transports oocytes and sperm, serves as the site of fertilization, and supports early embryonic development. The oviduct is essential for fertility. In the mouse, the oviduct is a coiled, complex structure that develops from the simple embryonic Müllerian duct. The oviduct consists of four segments, including the infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, and uterotubal junction. Additionally, the mouse oviduct forms coils, develops longitudinal folds, and undergoes both mesenchymal and epithelial differentiation. Oviduct development and differentiation occurs pe

Placental mesenchymal dysplasia: can early diagnosis ensure a good materno-foetal outcome? A case report.

Placental mesenchymal dysplasia is a rare disorder characterized by an increased size placenta with cystic villi and ectasic vessels. The correct diagnosis is very important, because placental mesenchymal dysplasia is usually compatible with a normal foetal morphology and a good materno-foetal outcome. An accurate ultrasound evaluation can help in the identification of characteristic patterns associated to this trophoblastic disease, particularly to distinguish it from its main differential diagnosis, i.e. hydatidiform mole. We report an early second-trimester ultrasound diagnosis of placental

How do you get six meters of epididymis inside a human scrotum?

It is very clear that the epididymis plays a crucial role in the maturation of spermatozoa, and without a fully developed and functional epididymis, male infertility will result. We are especially interested in understanding the mechanisms that regulate the development of this important organ because disruptions to epididymal function will also arise as a consequence of abnormal development. Very little is known either of the process of epididymal development or the nature and causes of congenital defects that lead to male infertility. A major event during Wolffian/epididymal duct embryonic de

Development of transient head cavities during early organogenesis of the Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus).

Three consecutive pairs of head cavities (premandibular, mandibular, and hyoid) found in elasmobranchs have been considered as remnants of preotic 'head' somites-serial homologues of the myotomic compartments of trunk somites that give rise to the extraoccular musculature. Here, we study a more derived vertebrate, and show that cavitation is more complex in the head of Crocodylus niloticus, than just the occurrence of three pairs of cavities. Apart from the premandibular cavities, paired satellite microcavities, and unpaired extrapremandibular microcavities are recognized in the prechordal reg

Epstein-Barr virus-associated epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that usually maintains a harmonious relationship with its host. Rarely, this host-virus balance is perturbed, causing a diverse group of malignancies in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. In addition to its role in hematologic malignancies (Burkitt lymphoma, subsets of Hodgkin and T-cell lymphomas, posttransplant lymphomas), EBV has been implicated in both epithelial (undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a subset of gastric adenocarcinomas) and mesenchymal (EBV-associated smooth muscle tumor, inflammatory pseudotumo

[Marrow-tympanum connections in fetuses and infants].

The connections between hematopoietic bone marrow and the tympanum caused by bony dehiscences in immature middle ear were examined in 58 temporal bones of fetuses and infants. There were no anomalies in any of the cases, and they were divided into two groups: a group with inflammation of middle ear and a group without inflammation. The tympanic cavity was compartmentalized into thirteen portions to investigate the appearance of the connection, and the connections were classified into the mesenchymal type and the direct type dependent on residual mesenchyme in each portion. Marrow-tympanum conn

Ciliary muscle in avian is derived from mesenchymal and epithelial cells.

It has long been maintained that the ciliary muscle derives from mesenchymal cells. The embryonic development of the avian ciliary muscle was studied in chick embryos from stage 25 HH to the time of hatching. Serial sections of the eye were stained routinely or immunocytochemically using the monoclonal antibody 13F4, which recognizes a cytoplasmic antigen specific for all types of muscle cells. We found that the mesenchymal immunoreactive cells, at stage 37 HH, are arranged in two distinct orientations forming the anterior and posterior portions of the ciliary muscle. At stages 38 and 39 HH th

Myotome formation: a multistage process.

The epaxial muscles of the body are localized in a dorsomedial position with respect to the axial structures, attach to the vertebral column and are concerned with maintenance of posture and movements of the vertebral column. The epaxial musculature derives from the myotome, a transient embryonic structure whose formation is initiated at the epithelial somite stage and is accomplished following complete dissociation of the epithelial dermomyotome. Recent results suggest that myotome development is a multistage process, characterized by addition of sequential waves of muscle progenitors. A firs

Changes in expression of the oligosaccharides in the human fetal skin.

Lectin histochemistry was used to investigate the glycoconjugate saccharidic moieties in the skin of human fetuses ranging in age from the 8th to the 13th week of gestation. For this purpose, seven HRP-conjugated lectins were employed (Con A, WGA, PNA, DBA, SBA, UEAI and LTA). The distribution and changes of the sugar residues of glycoconjugates at the level of the various layers of the fetal epidermis, as well of the underlying mesenchyme were studied. We have shown that UEAI reactivity is a characteristic finding of the cells of the intermediate layer at the 11th and 12th week of gestation.

Role of Ito cells in the liver function.

Ito cells (perisinusoidal fat-storing cells, stellate cells, lipocytes) of the liver are mesenchymal cells located in the space of Disse. They are the main place of vitamin A storage in characteristic lipid droplets. Moreover, they demonstrate synthetic activity of collagens and other extracellular matrix proteins involved in hepatic fibrosis. Their long, contractile cytoplasmic processes encompass the sinusoids and can affect sinusoidal blood flow. Because of their location in the space of Disse and connection with other sinusoidal and parenchymal cells, they are probably involved in local ne

Congenital midline cervical cleft.

We present a case of congenital midline cervical cleft (CMCC), a sporadic lesion with a predilection for white females. It characteristically occurs in the midline ventral neck and consists of a cephalad skin tag, a mucosal surface, and a caudal sinus. There is an associated submucosal fibrous cord and interwoven bundles of skeletal muscle. This is occasionally tethered to the mandible and/or sternum causing neck contractures. CMCC is usually isolated, but rare cases have been associated with midline clefts of the tongue, lower lip, mandible, and sternum. The embryogenesis is unclear but argum

Sensorineural hearing loss and somatic insufficiency.

Studies of clinical, audiometric and histological defects in patients with conductive otosclerosis, demonstrated the occurrence of subclinical manifestations in the hair, nails, joints and teeth. Light-microscopic examination of the skin in these patients has shown metachromasia of the ground substance and degenerative abnormalities in the collagen and elastic fibres. Structural abnormalities, in the organs developing from the ectoderm and mesoderm, led to the conclusion that otosclerosis is a universal disease characterized by ectomesodermal insufficiency, a somatic insufficiency. Optical mea…
