BACKGROUND: Tympanostomy tube (TT) insertion is typically performed in children in the operating room under general anesthesia. Devices combining equipment and steps in TT insertion, facilitate TT placement and may enable a transition to in-office TT procedures avoiding general anesthesia. This study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of a new TT insertion device, Solo + TTD, with general anesthesia.
METHODS: Children aged 6 months to 15 years meeting criteria for TT insertion were enrolled in an IRB-approved multicenter single-arm prospective study. TT insertion was performed in the oper

INTRODUCTION: Otitis media (OM) emerges as a prevalent complication following CI surgery, because OM typically has an elevated incidence in younger ages. We retrospectively analyzed pediatric patients who underwent CI surgery in our clinic, focusing on the management of Acute Otitis Media (AOM), Acute Mastoiditis (AM), and Otitis Media with Effusion (OME) in the postoperative period.
METHODS: We assessed 94 CI surgeries performed in 59 pediatric patients between January 2020 and November 2023. We examined the duration of conditions, the affected ears, and the treatment approaches used.

BACKGROUND: Tympanostomy tube insertion is a standard surgical procedure in children to address middle ear infections and effusion-related hearing and speech development issues. Perioperative treatments like ear drops containing antibiotics, steroids, and tube irrigation with saline aim to prevent complications, yet no universal gold standard treatment exists. Despite guidelines, practice preferences among ENT specialists vary, motivating this study to investigate perioperative management practices in Israel.
METHOD: A survey was distributed among ENT surgeons, collecting data on their main w

OBJECTIVE: We previously reported pandemic year (2020) intraoperative middle ear effusion (MEE) rate at time of bilateral myringotomy tube (BMT) placement was 18% lower compared to pre-pandemic year (2019). After mandatory stay at home orders (MSHO) and pandemic social distancing precautions were relaxed, we aimed to assess the impact of a persistent pandemic with new COVID-19 variants on MEE presence during BMT.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective chart summary exempted by Nemours institutional review board at a single tertiary children's hospital. Children < 18 years who underwent BMT du

OBJECTIVES: The insertion of grommets is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in children. The underlying reason might be otitis media with effusion (OME) with concomitant hearing loss, recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM) or a combination of the two. Sweden has a national quality register for children receiving grommets with the purpose of evaluating how treatment guidelines are followed, and if surgery confers good quality health care. The purpose of this study was to investigate the circumstances during which Swedish children receive grommets and to examine how doctors foll

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media (AOM) is one of the most common childhood illnesses. While many children experience sporadic AOM episodes, an important group suffer from recurrent AOM (rAOM), defined as three or more episodes in six months, or four or more in one year. In this subset of children AOM poses a true burden through frequent episodes of ear pain, general illness, sleepless nights and time lost from nursery or school. Grommets, also called ventilation or tympanostomy tubes, can be offered for rAOM.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of bilateral grommet insertion with or wi

IMPORTANCE: Persistent, viscous middle ear effusion in pediatric otitis media (OM) contributes to increased likelihood of anesthesia and surgery, conductive hearing loss, and subsequent developmental delays. Biomarkers of effusion viscosity and hearing loss have not yet been identified despite the potential that such markers hold for targeted therapy and screening.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of gel-forming mucins and aquaporin 5 (AQP5) gene expression with inflammation, effusion viscosity, and hearing loss in pediatric OM with effusion (OME).

We determined the cost of care for 2 diagnosis and management approaches for acute otitis media (AOM) among children 6 to 30 months old. A case-control design was used. Cases included 208 children diagnosed with AOM based on a bulging tympanic membrane (TM) and treated with amoxicillin/clavulanate. Controls (5:1 ratio) included 1020 children with AOM diagnosed not requiring bulging of the TM and treated with amoxicillin. Fewer cases (49%) than controls (69%) were diagnosed with AOM (P < .001), fewer were diagnosed with recurrent AOM or AOM treatment failure (0.34 vs 1.6/child; P < .0001), and
