Building characteristics affect the risk of allergy development.

Damp dwellings increase the risk for house dust mite (HDM) infestation in temperate climate zones and may be associated with an increased risk for allergic disease. The aim of the study was to assess possible relationships between allergen levels in house dust, characteristics of residence buildings and allergic diseases in children. A subsample of 12-yr-old children, having the same address in 1991 and 1996, was selected from a population-based sample of children from the Göteborg area. Health inspectors examined the residences of all the 109 children and several different building characteri

Arrhenotoky and oedipal mating in the northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) (Acari: Gamasida: Macronyssidae).

BACKGROUND: The northern fowl mite (NFM; Ornithonyssus sylviarum) is a blood-feeding ectoparasite of birds and a major pest of poultry in the United States. Mite populations spread rapidly in commercial flocks, reach peak burdens of >70,000 mites per bird and have developed resistance to many pesticides. Despite decades as a pest in the United States, the reproductive biology of NFM remains unclear. Based on karyotypes, the NFM has haplodiploid sex determination, which suggests unmated females could produce male offspring (arrhenotoky). Thus, unmated females could disseminate to a new host and

Comparative immune responses against Psoroptes ovis in two cattle breeds with different susceptibility to mange.

The sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, is a major problem in the beef cattle industry, especially in Belgian Blue (BB) cattle. This breed is naturally more predisposed to psoroptic mange but reasons for this high susceptibility remain unknown. Different immune responses could be a potential cause; thus in this study, the cutaneous immune response and in vitro cellular immune response after antigen re-stimulation were examined in naturally infested BB. Cytokine production in the skin and in circulating re-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) demonstrated a mixed pro-inflammatory T

A Diverse Range of Novel RNA Viruses in Geographically Distinct Honey Bee Populations.

Understanding the diversity and consequences of viruses present in honey bees is critical for maintaining pollinator health and managing the spread of disease. The viral landscape of honey bees (Apis mellifera) has changed dramatically since the emergence of the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, which increased the spread of virulent variants of viruses such as deformed wing virus. Previous genomic studies have focused on colonies suffering from infections by Varroa and virulent viruses, which could mask other viral species present in honey bees, resulting in a distorted view of viral diversit

Care and treatment of scabies.

In these days of Universal Precautions, the staff nurse can and should work with all patients as if they had a potentially infectious disease. A case in point is scabies which mimics many dermatological conditions and is transmitted by direct contact. Scabies is caused by infestation with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, and can be a problem in nursing homes and hospitals, particularly among patients who are debilitated and require extensive hands-on care. A scabies outbreak need not result in chaos or epidemic. If nursing staff are well trained in Universal Precautions, especially handwashing, muc

Recombinant PsoSP4 confers superior 80% protection against psoroptic mange in rabbits in association with a Th1-biased immune response.

Psoroptic mange, caused by Psoroptes ovis, is a severe global ectoparasitic disease for which no commercial vaccine is available. Here, we evaluated four recombinant P. ovis proteins (rPsoSP4, rPsoPRF, rPsoMIF, and rPsoSP5) as subunit vaccine candidates in a rabbit model. Three antigens conferred significant and graded protection, with final protection rates of 80% (rPsoSP4), 60% (rPsoPRF) and 20% (rPsoMIF), compared to 0% in the control and rPsoSP5-vaccinated groups. The lead candidate, rPsoSP4, reduced ear lesion scores, crust weights, and mite burden by up to 88.57%, 88.30%, and 81.80%, res

Molecular detection of Bartonella in bats and their ectoparasites, Spinturnix myoti, from central and Western Yunnan Province, China.

Bartonella, a facultative intracellular pathogen, is known for causing zoonotic diseases and has been detected in a variety of mammals and arthropods. Previous research has highlighted bats as natural reservoirs for Bartonella, with bat ectoparasites acting as vectors for transmission. Moreover, studies have indicated a positive correlation between the prevalence of ectoparasites and Bartonella infection levels. However, research on Bartonella carried by bats and their ectoparasites in China is limited. In this study, we captured bats at three sites in Yunnan Province, China, and collected the

Morbihan Disease: A Rare Case of Periorbital Bilateral Edema with Histopathological Findings of Chronic Inflammation and Demodex Localization.

BACKGROUND Morbihan disease, also known as Morbihan syndrome, is a rare medical condition characterized by chronic facial edema predominantly affecting the upper two-thirds of the face. Despite being recognized in medical literature for decades, its true prevalence and underlying pathophysiology remain poorly understood. Various hypotheses, including impaired lymphatic drainage, abnormal vascular permeability, immune dysregulation, and inflammatory reactions to demodex infestation, have been proposed to explain the etiology. CASE REPORT We present a case of a 61-year-old man with organized per

Species diversity and related ecology of chiggers on small mammals in a unique geographical area of Yunnan Province, southwest China.

Chiggers are common ectoparasites and the exclusive vector of scrub typhus. Based on previous investigations from a unique geographical area in Yunnan Province of southwest China, the Three Parallel Rivers Area, we retrospectively studied the species diversity and related ecology of chiggers on rodents and other small mammals. A very high species diversity of 120 chigger species was identified. Five dominant chigger species accounted for 59.4% (5238/8965) of total chiggers, and among them Leptotrombidium scutellare is the second major vector of scrub typhus in China. Species diversity of the c

The pathophysiology of rosacea.

Rosacea is thought to be a common skin disorder in the general population, presenting with many different clinical features and unknown causes. Theories of pathogenesis have been extrapolated from clinical observation of factors, leading to a definition of the etiology of rosacea which was very limited until recently. A recent upsurge in translational research in rosacea has significantly advanced the insight into this disease. In this review the authors discuss the pathogenesis of this disease, which could be determined by the following factors: 1) exposure to UV radiation; 2) reactive oxygen

Unusual manifestation of a concurrent demodectic and sarcoptic mange in a Zebu-Friesian cross-bred heifer.

We describe a rare case of a concurrent demodectic and sarcoptic mange in a 2-year-old heifer in Khartoum, Sudan. The lesions were massive lumps of granulomatous tumour-like dermatitis with thick, nodular folds mainly covering the head, neck and shoulders. Histopathological examination of the lesions revealed the presence of both Demodex bovis and Sarcoptes scabiei. The animal died regardless of the anti-parasitic treatment it received.

Interactions in an acarine predator guild: impact on Typhlodromalus aripo abundance and biological control of cassava green mite in Benin, West Africa.

To determine the impact of an acarine predator guild on the abundance of a shared herbivorous prey and its principal exotic predator, a series of surveys were conducted in ca. 200 cassava fields in swamp and non-swamp areas in southwestern Benin, West Africa. For each field, the surveys provided data on the density of a pest arthropod, the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar), of an introduced and successfully established natural enemy, the apex-inhabiting predatory mite Typhlodromalus aripo DeLeon, and on occurrence of other predator species that inhabit the leaves and share the
