Modifiable factors affecting inpatient violence in an acute child and adolescent psychiatric unit: A 16-year retrospective study.

Violent incidents in acute inpatient units for children and adolescents are a major and persistent problem. The demographic, clinical, and modifiable (environmental-organizational) risk factors that affect inpatient violence in an Acute Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit were investigated via a retrospective study. Data were collected from nursing and medical reports and the unit's census and included 100 days per year for 16 years. Incidents of violence and assault types were recorded, and variables such as the diagnostic category of assailants, total number of patients, and staffing facto

Nurses with dermal exposure to antineoplastic drugs: reproductive outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Nurses and other hospital workers are exposed to antineoplastic drugs during daily activities. Previous studies suggest that antineoplastic drugs at occupational exposure levels may be toxic to reproduction, but these studies are not consistent or conclusive. METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires were completed by 4393 exposed and nonexposed nurses employed between 1990 and 1997 (79% response). Questions were asked about pregnancy outcome, work-related exposures, and lifestyle. Exposure to antineoplastic drugs was estimated using task-based dermal exposure measurements and sel

The Unseen Side of Nursing Leadership: Conceptualizing Leadership Blind Spots in Healthcare Settings.

BACKGROUND: Nursing leadership effectiveness depends not only on clinical expertise and formal authority but on the capacity to perceive how one's own conduct is experienced by staff. Leadership blind spots-unrecognized gaps between a nurse leader's self-perception and the actual impact of their behaviour on staff voice, trust, and psychological safety-represent a consequential and theoretically underdeveloped phenomenon in nursing management. Left unrecognized, these gaps may silently undermine staff well-being, patient safety, and organizational culture. AIM: To clarify and conceptually def

Developing a competency framework for operating room nurse specialist training instructors: a Delphi study.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a competency evaluation framework for OR nurse specialist training instructors. METHODS: Guided by the Iceberg Model and the Onion Model of competency, a preliminary indicator framework was developed through a literature review, behavioral event interviews, and expert group discussions. A two-round Delphi survey involving 31 operating room nursing experts was conducted to refine the indicators. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to determine the weights of the final indicators. Expert authority, participation rate, and the degree of consensus were assessed. R

Transition Shock and Work Readiness Among Newly Employed Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study of the Mediating Role of Professional Self-Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: This study examined how professional self-efficacy mediates the relationship between transition shock and work readiness in newly employed nurses. Transition shock challenges novice nurses, affecting their confidence and practice readiness. Research has explored structural and organizational factors contributing to this phenomenon, including workload, time pressure, staffing constraints, role ambiguity, and limited transition support through orientation/preceptorship and supervision. However, understanding of psychological resources that can mitigate these demands is limited. This

Workplace Violence as an Occupational Hazard in Psychiatric Nursing: Burnout, Quality of Life, and Turnover Intentions in Saudi Arabia.

Background/Objectives: Workplace violence (WPV) is a major occupational health hazard and psychosocial safety concern in psychiatric nursing, yet evidence integrating exposure, worker well-being, and workforce stability within a single theory-informed model remains limited in Saudi Arabia. This study examined associations between WPV and proximal occupational outcomes (burnout, job satisfaction, and absenteeism) and distal outcomes (quality of life [QoL] and turnover intentions) among psychiatric nurses and tested burnout as a statistical mediator of the WPV-turnover intentions association. Contributing factors of birth asphyxia in Thailand: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is of significant concern because it impacts newborn health from low to severe levels. In Thailand, birth asphyxia remains a leading cause of delayed developmental health in children under 5 years old. The study aimed to determine the maternal, fetal and health service factors contributing to birth asphyxia. METHODS: A case-control design was conducted on a sample of 4256 intrapartum chart records. The samples were selected based on their Apgar scores in the first minute of life. A low Apgar score (≤ 7) was chosen for the case group (852) and a high Apgar score (> 7

Predicting Apnoeic Events in Preterm Infants.

Apnoea, a pause in respiration, is almost ubiquitous in preterm infants born before completing 30 weeks gestation. Apnoea often begets hypoxemia and/or bradycardia, and has the potential to result in adverse neurodevelopmental consequences. Our current inability to predict apnoeic events in preterm infants requires apnoea to first be detected by monitoring device/s in order to trigger an intervention by bedside (medical or nursing) staff. Such a reactive management approach is laborious, and makes the consequences of apnoeic events inevitable. Recent technological advances and improved signal

Nursing workforce trends in Kazakhstan, 2003-2024: an interrupted time series and joinpoint regression analysis in the context of educational reform.

INTRODUCTION: Kazakhstan introduced the Applied Bachelor of Nursing programme in 2014 as part of a broader effort to upgrade nursing education to degree level. Over the same period, the population grew from 14.9 to 20.0 million and the hospital network contracted by 27%. Whether these simultaneous pressures on workforce supply and demand translated into measurable changes in nursing density has not been examined. METHODS: We conducted an ecological time series study using administrative data from the Bureau of National Statistics (2003 to 2024). The primary outcome was nursing and midwifery p

Evaluation of "nursing ethics-professional teaching" integrated ward-round in practicing nursing students: a practical study.

BACKGROUND: Competence in ethical decision making and moral sensitivity are becoming increasingly important in nursing education. While teaching reforms have been conducted in nursing ethics, these reforms often fail to drive the adequate development of students’ critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills. To address this gap, in this study, a “nursing ethics–professional teaching” program is constructed on the basis of Rest’s ethical decision-making model, and its effects on enhancing the ethical decision-making ability and sensitivity of nursing interns are explored. METHODS: Limit

Corneal foreign bodies--first aid, treatment, and outcomes. Skills review for an occupational health setting.

Eye injuries from foreign body incidents remain prevalent in the workplace setting. Often the professional nurse provides the first line of treatment. The informal class presented at the authors' facility offered a comprehensive, organized presentation of a common injury encountered in the practice of occupational health nursing. Strenghts of the presentation included handouts demonstrating eye eversion technique and a flip chart summarizing the content to be placed in each medical station as quick reference. One challenge involved presenting the information to all nurses. The site encompasses

Effect of evidence-based nursing supervision on hemodialysis patients with chronic kidney failure.

This study aims to evaluate the effects of an evidence-based supervision nursing model on self-management, quality of life, emotional well-being, and complication rates in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) undergoing hemodialysis. A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 160 patients with CRF receiving hemodialysis between January 2022 and December 2023. After minimizing potential biases, patients were randomly assigned to either Group A (n = 80), who received evidence-based supervision nursing under a high-quality management model, or Group B (n = 80), who received traditional

Preliminary Experience with Conservative Sharp Wound Debridement by Nurses in the Outpatient Management of Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Safety, Efficacy, and Economic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of diabetes costs the United States an estimated $245 billion annually; one-third of which is related to the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). We present a safe, efficacious, and economically prudent model for the outpatient treatment of uncomplicated DFUs. METHODS: 77 patients (mean age = 54 years, range 31 to 83) with uncomplicated DFUs prospectively enrolled from September 2008 through February 2012. All patients received an initial sharp debridement by one of two orthopaedic foot and ankle fellowship trained surgeons. Ulcer dressings, offloading devices, and

Develop a diagnostic tool for dementia using machine learning and non-imaging features.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment can help guide direct prevention and supportive treatments, improve outcomes, and reduce medical costs. Existing advanced diagnostic tools are mostly based on neuroimaging and suffer from certain problems in cost, reliability, repeatability, accessibility, ease of use, and clinical integration. To address these problems, we developed, evaluated, and implemented an early diagnostic tool using machine learning and non-imaging factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 654 participants aged 65 or older from the Nu

Nurses' knowledge, attitudes, practices, and educational needs regarding frailty: a multicenter cross-sectional survey in southwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Population aging has made frailty a major public health concern. Frailty is potentially reversible when identified and managed early, and nurses are well positioned to deliver such care; however, nurses' frailty-related competencies vary considerably, and evidence remains scarce in southwestern China, where the aging burden is disproportionately high. We therefore conducted a multicenter study to assess nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding frailty, explore their associated factors, and clarify their educational needs. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was
