Hormonal predictors of sexual motivation in natural menstrual cycles.

Little is known regarding which hormonal signals may best predict within- and between-women variance in sexual motivation among naturally cycling women. To address this, we collected daily saliva samples across 1-2 menstrual cycles from a sample of young women; assayed samples for estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone; and also collected daily diary reports of women's sexual behavior and subjective sexual desire. With respect to within-cycle, day-to-day fluctuations in subjective desire, we found evidence for positive effects of estradiol and negative effects of progesterone. Desire exhibi

Couple perceptions of fibromyalgia symptoms: the role of communication.

The objectives of the current study were to describe fibromyalgia patient-spouse incongruence regarding patient pain, fatigue, and physical function; and to examine the associations of individual and interpersonal factors with patient-spouse incongruence. Two hundred four fibromyalgia patients and their coresiding partners rated the patient's symptoms and function. Multilevel modeling revealed that spouses, on average, rated patient fatigue significantly lower than patients. Couple incongruence was not significantly different from zero, on average, for pain severity, interference, or physical

Proximity to the US-Mexico border: a key to explaining geographic variation in US methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin purity.

AIMS: Although illicit drug purity is a widely discussed health risk, research explaining its geographic variation within a country is rare. This study examines whether proximity to the US-Mexico border, the United States' primary drug import portal, is associated with geographic variation in US methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine purity. DESIGN: Distances (proximity) between the US-Mexico border and locations of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin seizures/acquisitions (n = 239,070) recorded in STRIDE (System to Retrieve Information from Drug Evidence) were calculated for the period of 1990-

NMR spectroscopy in inhomogeneous B0 and B1 fields with non-linear correlation.

Resolved NMR spectra from samples in inhomogeneous B0 and B1 fields can be obtained with the so-called "ex situ" methodology, employing a train of composite or adiabatic z-rotation RF pulses to periodically refocus the inhomogeneous broadening during the detection of the time-domain signal. Earlier schemes relied on a linear correlation between the inhomogeneous B0 and B1 fields. Here the pulse length, bandwidth, and amplitude of the adiabatic pulses of the hyperbolic secant type are adjusted to improve the refocusing for a setup with non-linear correlation. The field correlation is measured u

Statistical challenges in the analysis of two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis experiments using DeCyder.

MOTIVATION: The DeCyder software (GE Healthcare) is the current state-of-the-art commercial product for the analysis of two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2D DIGE) experiments. Analyses complementing DeCyder are suggested by incorporating recent advances from the microarray data analysis literature. A case study on the effect of smallpox vaccination is used to compare the results obtained from DeCyder with the results obtained by applying moderated t-tests adjusted for multiple comparisons to DeCyder output data that was additionally normalized. RESULTS: Application of the more s

Ensemble learning of inverse probability weights for marginal structural modeling in large observational datasets.

Inverse probability weights used to fit marginal structural models are typically estimated using logistic regression. However, a data-adaptive procedure may be able to better exploit information available in measured covariates. By combining predictions from multiple algorithms, ensemble learning offers an alternative to logistic regression modeling to further reduce bias in estimated marginal structural model parameters. We describe the application of two ensemble learning approaches to estimating stabilized weights: super learning (SL), an ensemble machine learning approach that relies on V-

A new method for modeling preoperative diagnosis of ovarian tumors.

In this paper, we present a sequential nonuniform procedure, an inference method which combines feature selection based on the Kullback information gain and a step-wise classification procedure to produce a reliable, interpretable, and robust model. We applied the model to an ovarian tumor data set to distinguish between malignant and benign tumors. The performance of the model was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and gave an overall accuracy over 85%, and area under the curve (AUC) of 0.887 which compares well with existing methods. The method presented here is

Sparse Bayesian kernel survival analysis for modeling the growth domain of microbial pathogens.

Survival analysis is a branch of statistics concerned with the time elapsing before "failure," with diverse applications in medical statistics and the analysis of the reliability of electrical or mechanical components. We introduce a parametric accelerated life survival analysis model based on kernel learning methods that, at least in principal, is able to learn arbitrary dependencies between a vector of explanatory variables and the scale of the distribution of survival times. The proposed kernel survival analysis method is then used to model the growth domain of Clostridium botulinum, the fo

Reevaluating statistical methods for proportion-based laboratory outcomes in assisted reproduction.

BACKGROUND: Proportion-based laboratory outcomes in assisted reproductive technology (ART), including two-pronuclear fertilization rate, good-quality embryo rate, and blastocyst formation rate, are widely used to evaluate treatment effectiveness and laboratory performance. These outcomes are bounded between 0 and 1, frequently skewed, and arise from hierarchical data structures in which oocytes or embryos are nested within cycles and patients. Inappropriate statistical handling of such data can lead to biased inference and misinterpretation of treatment effects. This narrative review aimed to

AI-MET: A deep learning-based clinical decision support system for distinguishing multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children from endemic typhus.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought several diagnostic challenges, including the post-infectious sequelae multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Some of the clinical features of this syndrome can be found in other pathologies such as Kawasaki disease, toxic shock syndrome, and endemic typhus. Endemic typhus, or murine typhus, is an acute infection treated much differently than MIS-C, so early detection is crucial to a favorable prognosis for patients with these disorders. Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) are computer systems designed to support the decision-making of medical

Baseline-adjusted proportional odds models for the quantification of treatment effects in trials with ordinal sum score outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Sum scores of ordinal outcomes are common in randomized clinical trials. The approaches routinely employed for assessing treatment effects, such as t-tests or Wilcoxon tests, are not particularly powerful in detecting changes in relevant parameters or lack the ability to incorporate baseline information. Hence, tailored statistical methods are needed for the analysis of ordinal outcomes in clinical research. METHODS: We propose baseline-adjusted proportional odds logistic regression models to overcome previous limitations in the analysis of ordinal outcomes in randomized clinical

The potential of composite cognitive scores for tracking progression in Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Composite scores derived from joint statistical modelling of individual risk factors are widely used to identify individuals who are at increased risk of developing disease or of faster disease progression. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the ability of composite measures developed using statistical models to differentiate progressive cognitive deterioration in Huntington's disease (HD) from natural decline in healthy controls. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from TRACK-HD, the optimal combinations of quantitative cognitive measures to differentiate premanifest and early stage HD ind

Risk of cancer in the vicinity of municipal solid waste incinerators: importance of using a flexible modelling strategy.

BACKGROUND: We conducted an ecological study in four French administrative departments and highlighted an excess risk in cancer morbidity for residents around municipal solid waste incinerators. The aim of this paper is to show how important are advanced tools and statistical techniques to better assess weak associations between the risk of cancer and past environmental exposures. METHODS: The steps to evaluate the association between the risk of cancer and the exposure to incinerators, from the assessment of exposure to the definition of the confounding variables and the statistical analysis

Bayesian Expectile Joint Model With Varying Coefficient for Longitudinal and Semi-Competing Risks Data.

In the realm of clinical medical research, semi-competing risks data are usually observed in practice, yet there are few studies on the joint models of longitudinal and semi-competing risks data. In this paper, a joint model for longitudinal and semi-competing risks data is proposed. Based on the expectile regression, a linear mixed-effects longitudinal sub-model is formulated, and a Cox proportional hazards survival sub-model is considered under the framework of semi-competing risks. The two sub-models are linked by a shared longitudinal trajectory function. To accommodate the time-varying re

Negative Binomial mixed models estimated with the maximum likelihood method can be used for longitudinal RNAseq data.

Time-course RNAseq experiments, where tissues are repeatedly collected from the same subjects, e.g. humans or animals over time or under several different experimental conditions, are becoming more popular due to the reducing sequencing costs. Such designs offer the great potential to identify genes that change over time or progress differently in time across experimental groups. Modelling of the longitudinal gene expression in such time-course RNAseq data is complicated by the serial correlations, missing values due to subject dropout or sequencing errors, long follow up with potentially non-

In-Vivo relation between CT attenuation value and shockwave fragmentation.

PURPOSE: To use CT attenuation numbers as a means of determining the susceptibility of an artificial stone to in-vivo fragmentation with extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four types of artificial kidney stones having different CT attenuation values were used. One randomly selected stone was implanted in the renal pelvis of a kidney of 12 young pigs and exposed in vivo to 2500 shockwaves (21 kV) using an electrohydraulic lithotripter. Bilateral nephrectomy was performed after SWL. Fragments were strained through a mesh with a 3.1-mm grid, and the debris left on

A Bias-Adjusted Approach for Logistic Modeling With Predicted Exposures.

Bias-adjusted estimators are proposed for logistic regression parameters under a mixture measurement error model. In observational studies, collecting the true exposure for all units is often infeasible. This has led to the use of prediction models to estimate the true exposure. However, these estimates are error-prone, introducing measurement error. Measurement error in statistical analysis can result in biased parameter estimates and unreliable conclusions. The method developed in this work uses a mixture error model that accounts for both an error-prone predicted exposure and true exposure.

Taking Into Account the Susceptible Window for Exposures in Cox Proportional Hazards Model: A Way Using Splines to Model the Lag-Risk Relationship.

External exposures take time to accumulate and affect human health, leading to a time lag between initial exposure and the manifestation of clinical signs. Susceptible time window analysis aims to describe the relationship between the time since exposure and its effects. To obtain unbiased estimates in susceptible time window analysis, researchers may need to adjust for exposures measured at different times simultaneously. Conventional Cox proportional hazards models often fail in this regard due to the strong multicollinearity between lagged exposure terms. In addition to estimation challenge

Strategy to Control Biases in Prior Event Rate Ratio Method, With Application to Palliative Care in Patients With Advanced Cancer.

Prior event rate ratio (PERR) is a method shown to perform well in mitigating confounding and is gaining popularity in real-world evidence research. However, it depends on several model assumptions. We propose an analytic strategy to correct biases arising from violation of two model assumptions, namely, population homogeneity and event-independent treatment. We propose a reformulation of PERR estimation by embedding a treatment-by-period interaction term in the Andersen-Gill model for recurrent event data, which is robust to bias arising from unobserved heterogeneity. Based on this model, we

Identifiability and model misspecification for modelling recurrent infections using routine health care data.

For infectious diseases where people can experience multiple infections during their lifetime, the time between observed infections in individuals (or "time to recurrence") can provide valuable information on infection and transmission dynamics. Routinely collected data, such as electronic health records, are a potential source of time to recurrence data. However, they are challenging to analyse because patients can drop out of the data set in a way that is not visible to the data collection process. Standard epidemiological approaches, such as parametric survival analysis with imputation, can
