Social intervention and the elderly: a randomized controlled trial.

A randomized controlled trial was set up in 1985 to test the effect of social intervention over 3 years among elderly people, aged 75 and ab … ical, paramedical, social, and voluntary services; and changes in a number of subjective variables (morale, loneliness, and self-perceived health). No significant differences were found for any of the variables with the exception of self-perceived health status, where the experimental group showed significantly greater improvements than did the control g …

The third axis: partner choice.

Though we find the 'triple theory' of moral cognition, with its emphasis on resource-rational contractualism, to be well argued, we suggest that Levine et al.'s model starts too late in the process. That is, we agree that their proposed abstractions and heuristics can help to develop mutually beneficial arrangements, but effective contracts also require the identification of reliable actors.

Impairment Arguments, Interests, and Circularity.

A common justification for abortion rights is that the death of the fetus does not violate any of the fetus's time-relative interests. The time-relative interest account (TRIA) of harm and wrongdoing tells us that a necessary condition for harming someone is that his or her time-relative interests are frustrated. Regarding the justification for abortion, this account falls prey to impairment arguments. Impairment arguments entertain cases of prenatal injury, such as the mother using illicit drugs that disable the child. The intuition is that the child who is born with such disabilities is harm

Perspectives of U.S. harm reduction advocates on persuasive message strategies.

BACKGROUND: The messages used to communicate about harm reduction are critical in garnering public support for adoption of harm reduction interventions. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of harm reduction interventions at reducing overdose deaths and disease transmission, the USA has been slow to adopt harm reduction to scale. Implementation of evidence-based interventions has been hindered by a historical framing of drug use as a moral failure and related stigmatizing attitudes among the public toward people who use drugs. Understanding how professional harm reduction advocates communica

[Medicine in relation to sex, gender and sexualities].

This article reviews how the distinction between the notions of gender, sex and sexualities has gradually evolved over the course of medical history. The definition of these concepts emerged in the context of the development of medical nosography to create categories that would distinguish the normal from the pathological. In the same way as somatic disorders, sexual behaviors are categorized and those that deviate from the norm and from the morality at that time, are taken care of by medicine.

Effects of relative deprivation on change in displaced aggression and the underlying motivation mechanism: A three-wave cross-lagged analysis.

Displaced aggression refers to pernicious acts against innocent people. To date, little is known about mechanisms underlying dynamic changes in displaced aggression. The present study constructed a cross-lagged model to examine the dynamic effects of relative deprivation on displaced aggression and the mediation mechanisms underlying these effects. A total of 1130 undergraduate students participated in this three-wave longitudinal study. The results showed that relative deprivation predicted changes in displaced aggression through concurrent changes in levels of hostile attribution bias and mo

In Vitro Fertilization: A Pastoral Taboo?

Scholars have shown how the moral limitations and caveats that many religions pose against new assisted reproductive technologies have hindered women's medical help-seeking. In the context of reproductive medicine, Catholics, compared to other religious groups (Evans and Hudson 2007), are more likely to disapprove in vitro fertilization (IVF). This article explores, through a qualitative empirical study, the absence of dialogue between Catholic congregants and their priests about IVF. On the one hand, parishioners primarily spoke about infertility issues in a very general manner, but would bar

An Indecent Society, Sick Souls, and the Weak Messianic Force of God: A Reflection on Religious Health in the Anthropocene Era.

This article posits that the dire realities associated with the Anthropocene Era will increase the presence of indecent societies that humiliate Others while securing the well-being of privileged groups. Within the society, humiliation, which is carried out by various political, social, and economic apparatuses, leads to civic carelessness and perfidy that accompanies both the foreclosure of the space of appearances, wherein people speak and act together, and the diminution of Others' self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-respect. It is argued that indecent societies depend on sick souls who

Increasing the capacity to provide compassionate care by expanding knowledge of caring science practices at a pediatric hospital.

BACKGROUND: The emotional aspects of patient care affect care givers' capacity to remain present, safe and caring. As demands increase and capacity decreases care providers are at risk for compassion fatigue (CF). LOCAL PROBLEM: Our organization treats children with complicated diagnoses. Nurses carry a heavy emotional burden due to prolonged exposure to suffering with chronically ill children, ethical dilemmas, and an onus to also care for the parents. METHODS: Our program highlights theory guided practices that honor the complexities of caring for others and creates opportunity for the car

Medico-ethical versus biological evaluationism, and the concept of disease.

According to the 'fact-plus-value' model of pathology propounded by K. W. M. Fulford, 'disease' is a value term that ought to reflect a 'balance of values' stemming from patients and doctors and other 'stakeholders' in medical nosology. In the present article I take issue with his linguistic-analytical arguments for why pathological status must be relative to such a kind of medico-ethical normativity. Fulford is right to point out that Boorse and other naturalists are compelled to utilize evaluative terminology when they characterize the nature of diseases and biological dysfunctions. But the

When violations of perfect duties do not cause strong trait attributions.

It is well documented that violations of perfect duties (duties that can never be violated by moral agents) cause strong trait attributions. Brown, Trafimow, and Gregory (2005) found an exception to this general principle when the violation is performed under extreme circumstances. In the present research, we hypothesized that extreme circumstances are not necessary to weaken the attributional effect of violations of perfect duties provided that the violations were performed to help another person. Two experiments were performed in which target people violated perfect or imperfect duties for a

Virtue trade-offs in everyday life.

Is it usually possible to be virtuous in all ways, or do people experience ubiquitous trade-offs among moral virtues? Past work has examined a limited set of virtue pairs (e.g., honesty vs. compassion, fairness vs. loyalty) and focused on situations in which trade-offs are likely to occur. Across 2 day reconstruction method studies featuring representative U.S. samples, we investigate the frequency and experience of trade-offs among 12 virtues in everyday life. In Study 1 (N = 377), participants reported virtue conflicts during 12,385 episodes across 1 week. In Study 2 (N = 988), participants

Exploring the path to corruption-An informed grounded theory study on the decision-making process underlying corruption.

Past corruption research at the individual level has mainly focused on demographics, personality, attitudes, or morality related variables. Until now, only a few studies have focused on the intra-individual psychological mechanisms of corruption. Building on normative decision-making theory, the present study attempts to shed further light on the internal mechanisms that lead to the decision that corruption is a viable path. Following an informed grounded theory approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 38 Indonesian prisoners who have been convicted of corruption. Guided by a mul

Forensic psychology and correctional psychology: Distinct but related subfields of psychological science and practice.

This article delineates 2 separate but related subfields of psychological science and practice applicable across all major areas of the field (e.g., clinical, counseling, developmental, social, cognitive, community). Forensic and correctional psychology are related by their historical roots, involvement in the justice system, and the shared population of people they study and serve. The practical and ethical contexts of these subfields is distinct from other areas of psychology-and from one another-with important implications for ecologically valid research and ethically sound practice. A Framework of Institutional Obligations for Pragmatic Clinical Trials.

Pragmatic clinical trials (PCTs) embed research into clinical care. This deliberate research-care integration means that healthcare institutions are key partners for PCTs. Prior literature has identified several ethical challenges in PCTs for which institutional involvement is a necessary condition for their resolution. However, no comprehensive account exists to describe the moral obligations of healthcare institutions for PCTs. To that end, we propose a framework of ten obligations for institutions when leading or participating in PCTs. These obligations span the lifecycle of research, begin

Anesthesiology 5.0: Thriving amid Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity.

Anesthesiology is experiencing simultaneous crises of workforce depletion, moral distress, rising complexity, and economic constraint-manifestations of a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous environment. Traditional, efficiency-driven solutions have failed to restore balance and have deepened instability. Anesthesiology 5.0 provides a framework for redesigning perioperative systems around human capacity, shifting responsibility from individual resilience to organizational design. Drawing on Industry 5.0, it emphasizes three interdependent pillars-human-centricity, sustainability, and re

Albert Schweitzer: A Reverence for Life, Empathy, and the Medical Vocation.

Albert Schweitzer's life integrated theology, philosophy, music, and medicine into a unified ethical commitment to humanity. Awarded the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize, he articulated a moral vision grounded in deep empathy and respect for all living beings. This article examines the developmental, relational, and cultural influences that shaped his life trajectory, including his upbringing in Alsace, formative experiences of privilege and moral sensitivity, and the intellectual impact of philosophical and religious traditions. It traces his transition from a distinguished academic career to the pursu

Against Incorporating Politics into Medical Professionalism.

Calls for political advocacy as essential to the medical professional mission have grown more frequent and insistent in the United States in the past 15 years. The author offers reasons why these calls should be resisted and a tentative diagnosis of the recent rise in their frequency. Especially in the past five years, professionals of many callings have embraced politics in their work. The author suggests that this embrace exhibits a utopian political moralism that has recently displaced a 20th-century "small-l liberalism" consensus among American professionals. While this moralism has provid
