Control of Bancroftian filariasis by integrating therapy with vector control using polystyrene beads in wet pit latrines.

In the town of Makunduchi, Zanzibar, wet pit latrines provided breeding places for Culex quinquefasciatus and there were few other mosquito breeding places available. The adult mosquito population in bedrooms was monitored for a year and found to consist almost entirely of Cx quinquefasciatus of which 2.45% carried infective larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti. It was estimated that each person received about 24,993 bites per year, of which 612 were potentially infective. After a year of baseline data collection, polystyrene beads were expanded in boiling water and applied to form floating layers o

Pseudomonas mosselii: a potential alternative for managing pyrethroid-resistant Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a widespread mosquito in tropical and subtropical regions that causes significant mortality and morbidity in humans by transmitting diseases, such as dengue fever and Zika virus disease. Synthetic insecticides, such as pyrethroids, have been used to control Ae. aegypti, but these insecticides can also affect nontarget organisms and contaminate soil and water. This study aimed to investigate the mosquitocidal activity of Pseudomonas mosselii isolated from pond sludge against larvae of Ae. aegypti. RESULTS: Based on the initial results, similar time-course profiles

Evaluation of water-soluble pouches of Bacillus sphaericus applied as prehatch treatment against Culex mosquitoes in simulated catch basins.

An outdoor test was conducted to evaluate initial efficacy and longevity of water-soluble pouches of Bacillus sphaericus (VectoLex WSP and VBC60035 WSP), applied as prehatch treatment against Culex species in simulated catch basins. Both VectoLex WSP and VBC60035 WSP, applied at 1 pouch (10 g) per basin (single treatment), yielded significant immediate and long-term (> 90% for 203 days) control of late instars of Culex mosquitoes. Consistent and complete control of pupae (100%) as a result of larval mortality was clearly indicated for 70 days posttreatment. Control levels varied but remained h

Issues in filariasis--a century of enquiry and a century of failure.

A great deal is known about the biology of the filarial parasites infecting man and of their transmission, their clinical manifestations, their treatment and their control but many more people are infected with Bancroftian filariasis and onchocerciasis today than more than 100 years ago when Manson discovered the first live cycle. There has been some success in the control of the Simulium vectors of onchocerciasis in parts of Africa and mass chemotherapy has helped to reduce Bancroftian filariasis in a few Pacific Islands but the main endemic areas have seen no benefit from all the advance in

Industrial hotspot: Infestation of invasive Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in Puducherry, India.

OBJECTIVES: Industrial zones are large, unsupervised areas with a high risk of Aedes vector infestation because of the presence of diverse artificial breeding habitats. Unlike community-based Aedes surveys, research on vector breeding in industrial settings is limited. Therefore, this research aimed to explore Aedes vector infestation levels in industrial regions, their breeding places and the presence of dengue virus transmission. METHODS: An Aedes immature survey was conducted in 70 industrial units of an urban industrial estate of Puducherry, following standard protocols by the National Ce

Quality Control Methods for Aedes albopictus Sterile Male Transportation.

Genetic based mosquito control methods have been gaining ground in recent years for their potential to achieve effective suppression or replacement of vector populations without hampering environments or causing any public health risk. These methods require the mass rearing of the target species in large facilities sized to produce millions of sterile males, as already well established for a number of insects of agricultural importance. Assessing the performance of released males in Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) control programs is of the utmost importance for the success of the operation. Be…

Balancing functions of regulatory T cells in mosquito-borne viral infections.

Mosquito-borne viral infections are on the rise worldwide and can lead to severe symptoms such as haemorrhage, encephalitis, arthritis or microcephaly. A protective immune response following mosquito-borne viral infections requires the generation of a controlled and balanced immune response leading to viral clearance without immunopathology. Here, regulatory T cells play a central role in restoring immune homeostasis. In current review, we aim to provide an overview and summary of the phenotypes of FOXP3+ Tregs in various mosquito-borne arboviral disease, their association with disease severit

Modeling the suppression dynamics of Aedes mosquitoes with mating inhomogeneity.

A novel strategy for controlling mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue, malaria and Zika, involves releases of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes as Wolbachia cause early embryo death when an infected male mates with an uninfected female. In this work, we introduce a delay differential equation model with mating inhomogeneity to discuss mosquito population suppression based on Wolbachia. Our analyses show that the wild mosquitoes could be eliminated if either the adult mortality rate exceeds the threshold [Formula: see text] or the release amount exceeds the threshold [Formula: see text] uniforml

Mosquito genomics: progress and challenges.

The whole-genome sequencing of mosquitoes has facilitated our understanding of fundamental biological processes at their basic molecular levels and holds potential for application to mosquito control and prevention of mosquito-borne disease transmission. Draft genome sequences are available for Anopheles gambiae, Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus. Collectively, these represent the major vectors of African malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever viruses, and lymphatic filariasis, respectively. Rapid advances in genome technologies have revealed detailed information on genome architecture…

Dataset of vector mosquito images.

Mosquitoes pose substantial threat to public health resulting in million number of deaths wordlwide every year. They act as the vectors responsible for diseases such as Dengue, Yellow fever,Chikungunya, Zika etc. The harmful mosquito species are contained in the genera Aedes, Anopheles and Culex. Automated species identification of vectors is essential to implement targeted vector control strategies. The objective of the proposed paper is to construct a novel dataset of images of dangerous mosquito species. We have prepared a dataset of images of adult mosquitoes belonging to three species: Ae

Modeling the importation and local transmission of vector-borne diseases in Florida: The case of Zika outbreak in 2016.

Chikungunya, dengue, and Zika viruses are all transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquito species, had been imported to Florida and caused local outbreaks. We propose a deterministic model to study the importation and local transmission of these mosquito-borne diseases. The purpose is to model and mimic the importation of these viruses to Florida via travelers, local infections in domestic mosquitoes by imported travelers, and finally non-travel related transmissions to local humans by infected local mosquitoes. As a case study, the model will be used to simulate the accumulativ

Gaps in protection to Anopheles exposure in high malaria endemic regencies of Papua Province, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Malaria in eastern Indonesia remains high despite significant reductions and local elimination in other parts of the country. Malaria control activities that have been implemented include early diagnosis and prompt treatment, provision of Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), and indoor residual spraying (IRS). To expedite malaria elimination in this region, a rapid entomological assessment combined with human behaviour observations (HBOs) were conducted in eight high malaria endemic regencies in Papua Province, Indonesia. The present study focuses on identifying gaps in p

Genotyping of Anopheles mosquito blood meals reveals nonrandom human host selection: implications for human-to-mosquito Plasmodium falciparum transmission.

BACKGROUND: Control of malaria parasite transmission can be enhanced by understanding which human demographic groups serve as the infectious reservoirs. Because vector biting can be heterogeneous, some infected individuals may contribute more to human-to-mosquito transmission than others. Infection prevalence peaks in school-age children, but it is not known how often they are fed upon. Genotypic profiling of human blood permits identification of individual humans who were bitten. The present investigation used this method to estimate which human demographic groups were most responsible for tr

Susceptibility of Armigeres subalbatus Coquillett (Diptera: Culicidae) to Zika virus through oral and urine infection.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) disease outbreaks have been occurring in South America since 2015, and has spread to North America. Because birth defects and cases of Guillain Barré have been associated with infection with ZIKV, this has drawn global attention. ZIKV is generally considered an Aedes-transmitted pathogen. The transmission of ZIKV through blood by Aedes mosquito bites has been recognized as the major transmission route. However, it is not clear whether there are other transmission routes that can cause viral infection in mosquitos. The aim of the present study is to describe the su

Hexamerin a novel protein associated with Bacillus sphaericus resistance in Culex quinquefasciatus.

Bacterial insecticides like, Bacillus sphaericus and Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis, have been used for the control of nuisance and vector mosquitoes for more than two decades. For many years, it was assumed that the use of microbial larvicides based on B. sphaericus would not lead to resistance in mosquitoes. However, recent reports have shown that B. sphaericus toxins are not free from this problem. Therefore, the resistance of mosquito populations to be will seriously threaten the sustainability of current mosquito control programme using these microbial insecticides. In the pre…
