Shifts in EMG spectral power during fatiguing dynamic contractions.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the etiology of the electromyographic (EMG) spectral shift during dynamic fatigue. METHODS: Nineteen subjects (mean ± SD age = 22.4 ± 1.6 years) performed 50 consecutive maximal concentric isokinetic contractions of dominant leg extensors. Surface EMG signals were detected from the vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, and vastus medialis during each contraction, processed with a wavelet analysis, and the resulting spectra were decomposed with a nonparametric spectral decomposition procedure. RESULTS: The results indicated that the decreases in EMG frequency during the

Neuromuscular responses to mild-muscle damaging eccentric exercise in a low glycogen state.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of low muscle glycogen on the neuromuscular responses to maximal eccentric contractions. Fourteen healthy men (22 ± 3 years) performed single-leg cycling (20 min at ~75% maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2 max); eight 90 s sprints at a 1:1 work-to-rest ratio (5% decrements from 90% to 55% V̇O2 max until exhaustion) the evening before 100 eccentric (1.57 rads(-1)) with reduced (RED) and normal glycogen (NORM). Neuromuscular responses were measured during and up to 48 h after with maximal voluntary and involuntary (twitch, 20 Hz and 50 Hz) isometric contra

Long-term neuromuscular consequences of SARS-Cov-2 and their similarities with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome: results of the retrospective CoLGEM study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with long-COVID often complain of continuous fatigue, myalgia, sleep problems, cognitive dysfunction, and post-exertional malaise. No data are available on EMG recording of evoked myopotentials (M-waves) or exercise-induced alterations in long-COVID patients, providing evidence of muscle membrane fatigue. Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) develops in more than half of patients after an infectious disease, particularly viral diseases. A large proportion (around 70%) of these patients have neuromuscular disorders with M-wave alterations during and a

Integrating mechanical, physiological, and muscle oxygenation responses during field-based tethered repeated-sprint exercise in male professional soccer players.

Repeated-sprint ability is a key determinant of soccer performance. However, some mechanical and physiological responses underlying this task remain incompletely understood. This study characterized mechanical responses (force, velocity, and power) and regional muscle oxygen saturation (rSmO2) in the vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps brachii (BB) during field-based tethered repeated-sprint exercise (RSE). Associations between muscle oxygenation and mechanical performance, as well as post-exercise rSmO2, heart rate (HR), and blood lactate (LAC), were also examined. Ten professional soccer player

FES-Induced and Voluntary-Induced Fatigue in a Rehabilitation-Like Task.

In the context of FES-based rehabilitation and assistance tasks, there is a growing interest in managing the induced fatigue, which is an obvious limiting factor in training duration. However, it is unclear whether and how fatigue may develop in tasks commonly used in stroke rehabilitation. This work explored the effect of FES- or volition- induced movements on EMG-based effort and M-wave metrics that characterise fatigue, during a continuous wrist target-tracking task completed by 22 unimpaired participants. We found no significant changes in the mechanical and electrical responses of the mus

Examination of Sex-Related Differences in Fatigability and Frequency Components of Mechanomyographic Signals During Sustained Exercise.

BACKGROUND: Surface mechanomyographic (sMMG) signals have been used to examine sex-specific differences in the mechanical behavior of muscle during fatiguing exercise. However, studies often utilize simple amplitude- and frequency-based analyses, which only reveal the static components of the sMMG signal. METHODS: Thus, a wavelet-based analysis was used to examine changes in the spectral intensity of the non-dominant limb's vastus lateralis during a fatiguing, maximal, unilateral isometric leg extension in recreationally active men (n = 11) and women (n = 10). Relative changes in spectral int

Regional changes in muscle activity do not underlie the repeated bout effect in the human gastrocnemius muscle.

The repeated bout effect (RBE) confers protection following exercise-induced muscle damage. Typical signs of this protective effect are significantly less muscle soreness and faster recovery of strength after the second bout. The aim of this study was to compare regional changes in medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle activity and mechanical hyperalgesia after repeated bouts of eccentric exercise. Twelve healthy male participants performed two bouts of eccentric heel drop exercise (separated by 7 days) while wearing a vest equivalent to 20% of their body weight. High-density MG electromyographic a

Predicting postoperative fatigue: importance of preoperative factors.

Postoperative fatigue as defined by a 10-point scale (1 = fit, 10 = fatigued) was determined prospectively in 84 patients undergoing major surgery. Results from this scale correlated well with standard psychological assessment of fatigue (Profile of Mood States Questionnaire) (r = 0.767; p < 0.0001). Fatigue values were 3.46 +/- 0.19 arbitrary units (mean +/- SEM) preoperatively; and postoperatively they were 5.61 +/- 0.24 at day 7, 5.02 +/- 0.24 at day 14, 3.74 +/- 0.19 at day 28, and 2.77 +/- 0.18 at day 90. Fatigue during the postoperative period was integrated to give a total fatigue score

Model-based control of FES-induced single joint movements.

A crucial issue of functional electrical stimulation (FES) is the control of motor function by the artificial activation of paralyzed muscle … al improvement was achieved by applying the adaptive algorithm that could cope with problems due to muscle fatigue, thus permitting on-line identification of critical parameters of the plant. Although the present study is limited to a simplified experimental setup, its applicability to more complex and functional movements can be expected.

Qualitative study of fatigue in adults with primary mitochondrial disease: Development of the PROMIS Fatigue Mitochondrial Disease Short Form.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a debilitating symptom in patients with primary mitochondrial disease nPMD). Developing new treatments that improve fatigue is a patient priority but is hampered by a lack of fit-for-purpose patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). We aimed to understand the impact of fatigue on the lives of people with PMD and develop a brief PMD-specific PROM to evaluate fatigue in clinical trials. METHODS: Adults with genetically confirmed PMD and self-reported moderate-to-severe fatigue and myopathy/exercise intolerance participated in a concept elicitation interview to explore th

Trichinella pseudospiralis in humans: description of a case and its treatment.

The first known human case of Trichinella pseudospiralis myositis is described. A 33 years old woman reported 5 years of relatively mild symptoms of tiredness, muscle fatigue and muscle pain after exercise. She had minimal proximal weakness. Creatinine kinase was significantly elevated, and muscle biopsy showed polymyositis and Trichinella larvae. Steroid treatment dramatically worsened the weakness. Treatment with albendazole led to complete resolution of symptoms and laboratory abnormalities. Diagnosis and identification of the parasite were based on the distinctive appearance of the unencap…
