2D Speckle Tracking Strain Echocardiography in Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children: A Multicenter Analysis From the MUSIC Study.

BACKGROUND: 2D-speckle tracking echocardiography may help detect subclinical ventricular dysfunction, but data in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) are scarce. We investigated left ventricular (LV) strain parameters in MIS-C and their association with outcomes. METHODS: We performed an ambi-directional, 32-center cohort study on hospitalized patients with MIS-C (March 2020-November 2021) with at least 1 echocardiogram read by the Core Lab. Generalized estimating equation modeling was used to test associations between LV strain and a composite in-hospital adverse cardiovasc

A Mendelian Randomization Study of the Association Between Loud Music Exposure Frequency and Anxiety Disorders in European Populations.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether loud music is causally associated with anxiety disorder. METHODS: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted using inverse variance weighting (IVW), weighted median, MR-EGGER regression methods, simple mood and weighted mood. This study utilized publicly available pooled statistical datasets from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of loud music exposure in European populations as the exposure factor. Various subtypes of anxiety disorders were used as outcomes, with GWAS data for generalized anxiety disorder being sourced …

Music Familiarization Elicits Functional Connectivity Between Right Frontal/Temporal and Parietal Areas in the Theta and Alpha Bands.

Frequent listening to unfamiliar music excerpts forms functional connectivity in the brain as music becomes familiar and memorable. However, where these connections spectrally arise in the cerebral cortex during music familiarization has yet to be determined. This study investigates electrophysiological changes in phase-based functional connectivity recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) from twenty participants' brains during thrice passive listening to initially unknown classical music excerpts. Functional connectivity is evaluated based on measuring phase synchronization between all pai…

Music-Based Interventions for Symptom Management in Critically Ill, Mechanically Ventilated Adults: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

Background: Patients in intensive care units experience high symptom burden during mechanical ventilation (MV). Pharmacologic symptom management is associated with side effects and increased morbidity. Music-based interventions (MBIs) have been associated with reductions in both anxiety in MV adults and pain for critically ill adults, yet their use for the management of other burdensome symptoms has not been evaluated. The purpose of this scoping review is to map the state of evidence for the use of prerecorded music listening MBIs for symptom management in MV adults. Methods: A systematic sea…

The effect of live music therapy on white matter microstructure in very preterm infants - A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Music therapy (MT) is proposed to enrich the acoustic environment of very preterm infants (VPT) on the neonatal intensive care unit during a vulnerable period of brain development. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of MT on the white matter (WM) microstructure. It is hypothesized that MT affects WM integrity in VPT. METHODS: Randomized controlled trial enrolling infants born <32 weeks' gestation. Infants were randomized to MT or standard care. Live MT was provided twice weekly from the second postnatal week onwards by a trained music therapist. At term equiv…

Tonal structures benefit short-term memory for real music: Evidence from non-musicians and individuals with congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of music processing, which includes impaired pitch memory, associated to abnormalities in the right fronto-temporal network. Previous research has shown that tonal structures (as defined by the Western musical system) improve short-term memory performance for short tone sequences (in comparison to atonal versions) in non-musician listeners, but the tonal structures only benefited response times in amusic individuals. We here tested the potential benefit of tonal structures for short-term memory with more complex musical material. Congenital am…

Neural multimodal integration underlying synchronization with a co-performer in music: Influences of motor expertise and visual information.

Sensorimotor synchronization is a general skill that musicians have developed to the highest levels of performance, including synchronization in timing and articulation. This study investigated neurocognitive processes that enable such high levels of performance, specifically testing the relevance of 1) motor resonance and sharing high levels of motor expertise with the co-performer, and 2) the role of visual information in addition to auditory information. Musicians with varying levels of piano expertise (including non-pianists) performed on a single piano key with their right hand along with…

Increment of fatigue, depression, and stage fright during the first year of high-level education in music students.

In a recent Letter to the Editor, Grant and Pilz propose the hypothesis of a contribution of very low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels to provoke Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's death. Mozart died on the 5th of December, 1791, aged 35, probably due to an infection which, very likely, had low vitamin D levels as an important risk factor. According to Grant and Pilz, the lack of vitamin D is to be attributed, in the case of Mozart's, to insufficient exposure to sunlight, because he "did much of his composing at night, so would have slept during much of the day." Historical evidence, however, disproves
