Experimental evolution and functional genetics identify KIC1 as a determinant of reduced artemisinin susceptibility in Bangladeshi Plasmodium falciparum.

Bangladesh has greatly reduced malaria transmission, but persistent Plasmodium falciparum transmission in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), bordering Myanmar, remains a concern for elimination. Emerging artemisinin resistance could threaten remaining control efforts, making it important to identify determinants of reduced artemisinin susceptibility in CHT parasites. We combined long-term in vitro dihydroartemisinin (DHA) selection, whole-genome sequencing, functional genetics, and analysis of contemporaneous clinical isolates to define artemisinin-response variation in CHT P. falciparum. Causes of death across the life course in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: The drivers of mortality and their associated risk factors evolve throughout the course of life. Understanding these transitions is essential for effective, equitable, and age-appropriate health interventions. METHODS: As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we examined life expectancy and the probability of death from birth to age 70 years (70q0) from 1990 to 2023 for each Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member state. In addition, we assessed causes of death and risk factor by age and sex across different life stages.

Factors Related to Wildlife Consumption, Contact, and Environmental Exposures Across Ethnic Communities in Border Provinces of Thailand: A Quantitative One Health Study.

BACKGROUND: The One Health (OH) approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, particularly in Southeast Asia, where rapid environmental change and intensive human-animal interactions increase the risk of emerging infectious diseases. Wildlife interaction and environmental exposures are important but underexplored pathways for zoonotic disease transmission, especially in rural and ethnically diverse communities. Understanding these interconnected exposures is essential for informing effective disease prevention and control strategies. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

Quantification of the dynamics of antibody response to malaria to inform sero-surveillance in pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health threat and tools sensitive to detect infections in low malaria transmission areas are needed to progress elimination efforts. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to malaria infections. Throughout pregnancy they access routine antenatal care, presenting a unique sentinel population to apply novel sero-surveillance tools to measure malaria transmission. The aim of this study was to quantify the dynamic antibody responses to multiple antigens during pregnancy so as to identify a single or multiple antibody response of exposure to malaria in

Randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial of immunoglobulin Y as adjunct to standard supportive therapy for rotavirus-associated diarrhea among pediatric patients.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of hyperimmune immunoglobulin Y (IgY) against human rotavirus (HRV) among pediatric patients receiving standard supportive treatment for rotavirus-associated diarrhea mostly with an enteric non-cholera co-pathogen in a hospital setting. Two natural HRV reassortant clinical strains ATCC VR 2273 and ATCC VR 2274 were used as mixed immunizing antigens in poultry hens to generate anti-HRV IgY (Rotamix IgY). The Rotamix IgY was used in laboratory and clinical studies against control or placebo IgY. The control or placebo IgY was prepared using tissue culture m

Differentiating between dengue fever and malaria using hematological parameters in endemic areas of Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever (DF) and malaria are the two major public health concerns in tropical countries such as Thailand. Early differentiation between dengue and malaria could help clinicians to identify patients who should be closely monitored for signs of dengue hemorrhagic fever or severe malaria. This study aims to build knowledge on diagnostic markers that are used to discriminate between the infections, which frequently occur in malaria-endemic areas, such as the ones in Thailand. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in Phop Phra Hospital, a hospital located in the Thailand-Bu

IASM: A System for the Intelligent Active Surveillance of Malaria.

Malaria, a life-threatening infectious disease, spreads rapidly via parasites. Malaria prevention is more effective and efficient than treatment. However, the existing surveillance systems used to prevent malaria are inadequate, especially in areas with limited or no access to medical resources. In this paper, in order to monitor the spreading of malaria, we develop an intelligent surveillance system based on our existing algorithms. First, a visualization function and active surveillance were implemented in order to predict and categorize areas at high risk of infection. Next, socioeconomic a

A transdiagnostic community-based mental health treatment for comorbid disorders: development and outcomes of a randomized controlled trial among Burmese refugees in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies of mental health interventions in low-resource settings have employed highly structured interventions delivered by non-professionals that typically do not vary by client. Given high comorbidity among mental health problems and implementation challenges with scaling up multiple structured evidence-based treatments (EBTs), a transdiagnostic treatment could provide an additional option for approaching community-based treatment of mental health problems. Our objective was to test such an approach specifically designed for flexible treatments of varying and comorbid dis

Implementation of an interferon-gamma release assay to screen for tuberculosis in refugees and immigrants.

Despite increased use and accuracy of interferon-gamma release assays to detect latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in foreign-born arrivals in the United States, risk characteristics associated with positive results are not well characterized. We conducted a retrospective record review of 541 refugees and immigrants screened for LTBI with QuantiFERON(®)-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-IT) at the Spokane Public Health Clinic from January 2, 2008, through June 5, 2009. Overall, 24 % of the arrivals had a positive QFT-IT, with the greatest frequency of positive results occurring in arrivals from Liberia (

Serum vitamin D level in children with bronchiolitis.

Acute bronchiolitis is the most common lower respiratory tract infection during the first year of life. Vitamin D is an important contributing factor to the increasing incidence and severity of bronchiolitis over the past three decades. Numerous international studies have suggested that low vitamin D levels are associated with the severity of bronchiolitis. This study aimed to determine serum vitamin D levels in infants hospitalized with acute bronchiolitis in Myanmar. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in medical units of Yankin Children's Hospital from August 2022 to July 2023.

The epidemiology and burden of injury in countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), 1990-2021: findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Injuries are among the top causes of mortality and disability in southeast Asia. Although injury prevention is a key health priority in the Post-2015 Health Development Agenda of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the focus was placed solely on road injuries. The absence of a broader recognition of injury burden and trends hinders future intervention efforts. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the burden and epidemiological trends of all injuries across ASEAN countries. METHODS: In this analysis of the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Ri

Five times over: 42 new Angustopila species highlight Southeast Asia's rich biodiversity (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora, Hypselostomatidae).

The Southeast Asian genus Angustopila, currently comprising 13 nominal species, encompasses the world's tiniest land snails. This work shows that there are far more species than previously suspected, and that this genus is in fact, a very speciose group of tiny snails widely distributed in Southeast Asia. Angustopila is revised based on type material of known species as well as 211 samples newly collected in China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Altogether, 53 species and one subspecies are recognised, of which 42 species and subspecies are new to science: A.akrodon Páll-Gergely & Hunyad

The potential impact of COVID-19 in refugee camps in Bangladesh and beyond:  A modeling study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 could have even more dire consequences in refugees camps than in general populations. Bangladesh has confirmed COVID-19 cases and hosts almost 1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, with 600,000 concentrated in the Kutupalong-Balukhali Expansion Site (mean age, 21 years; standard deviation [SD], 18 years; 52% female). Projections of the potential COVID-19 burden, epidemic speed, and healthcare needs in such settings are critical for preparedness planning. METHODS AND FINDINGS: To explore the potential impact of the introduction of severe acute respiratory syndrome coro

High Incidence of Malaria Along the Sino-Burmese Border Is Associated With Polymorphisms of CR1, IL-1A, IL-4R, IL-4, NOS, and TNF, But Not With G6PD Deficiency.

Malaria is highly endemic in Yunnan Province, China, with the incidence of malaria being highest along the Sino-Burmese border. The aim of our study was to determine whether genetic polymorphisms are associated with the prevalence of malaria among Chinese residents of the Sino-Burmese border region. Fourteen otherwise healthy people with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, 50 malaria patients, and 67 healthy control subjects were included in our cross-sectional study. We analyzed the frequency of the G3093T and T520C single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CR1. Logistic regr
