Coherence and content of conflict-based narratives: associations to family risk and maladjustment.

This study examined the role of structural and content characteristics of children's conflict-based narratives (coherence, positive and aggressive themes) in the association between early childhood family risk and children's internalizing and externalizing problems in a sample of 193 children (97 girls, 96 boys) aged 3 to 5 years (M = 3.85, SD = .48). Parents participated in an interview on family related risk factors; teachers and parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; children completed conflict-based narratives based on the MacArthur Story Stem Battery (MSSB). Mad, bad or heroic? Gender, identity and accountability in lay portrayals of suicide in late twentieth-century England.

Suicide research has relied heavily on the psychological autopsy method, which uses interviews with the bereaved to ascertain the mental health status of the deceased prior to death. The resulting data are typically interpreted within a clinical diagnostic framework, which reinforces psychiatric assumptions concerning the ubiquity of mental illness amongst those who take their own lives. The ways in which informants reconstruct the past and the meanings they attach to events preceding the suicide are rarely examined. This paper uses qualitative methods to analyse the narratives given by bereav

Children's disclosures of sexual abuse: learning from direct inquiry.

OBJECTIVES: Published protocols for forensic interviewing for child sexual abuse do not include specific questions about what prompted children to tell about sexual abuse or what made them wait to tell. We, therefore, aimed to: (1) add direct inquiry about the process of a child's disclosure to a forensic interview protocol; (2) determine if children will, in fact, discuss the process that led them to tell about sexual abuse; and (3) describe the factors that children identify as either having led them to tell about sexual abuse or caused them to delay a disclosure. METHODS: Forensic intervie

Hermann Hesse and L: two narratives of sciatica.

BACKGROUND: In the literary novel Kurgast (1925), translated in English as A guest at the spa, the Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse describes the treatment of his own sciatica. METHODS: We compare Hesse's description of 85 years ago with a transcript of an interview with a contemporary patient with sciatica. The narratives of both texts were analyzed. RESULTS: Both narratives start with hope on full recovery. Later this changes into the realization that one needs to accept that some symptoms are irreversible and will be permanent. CONCLUSIONS: Although there currently is better understanding, d

How people with motor neurone disease talk about living with their illness: a narrative study.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study which explores patients' experiences and how they talk about living and coping with motor neurone disease. BACKGROUND: Living with motor neurone disease is challenging, frightening and disabling. It leads to progressive physical decline, normally with a prognosis of 3-5 years. Patients have to deal with many problems, including loss of mobility and the inability to communicate. There is little evidence about how people manage these problems or live with this illness. METHOD: Narrative case studies were used, the unit of analysis being a patient living i

Written emotional disclosure and processing of trauma are associated with protected health status and immunity in people living with HIV/AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared written emotional disclosure and processing of trauma among a relatively rare group of people with AIDS with atypically favourable disease status with an HIV+ comparison group. The study also examined the mediational role of emotional/cognitive processing and natural killer (NK) cells. DESIGN: This study utilized a cross-sectional group comparison design. METHOD: Two HIV+ groups, the Healthy Survivors (N=37;>9-months with <50 CD4 cells/mm(3) and asymptomatic), and an HIV+ comparison groups (N=100) wrote essays describing their reactions to past traumas; these w

Discourse skills of boys with fragile X syndrome in comparison to boys with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study compared the conversational discourse skills of boys who have fragile X syndrome with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with those of boys with Down syndrome and boys who are typically developing. METHOD: Participants were boys who have fragile X syndrome with (n = 26) and without (n = 28) ASD, boys with Down syndrome (n = 29), and boys who are typically developing (n = 22). Turns during an examiner-child interaction consisting of structured and semistructured activities were coded for the boys' ability to maintain a topic of conversation and the frequency of pers

Benefits of participating in internet interviews: women helping women.

Advantages of face-to-face qualitative interviews for participants have been addressed in the literature. The benefits of participating in qualitative interviews over the Internet, however, have yet to be discussed. Based on the experiences of 40 women who made up the sample for an Internet study on birth trauma, the author describes in this article the benefits reaped by these mothers through their participation in qualitative e-mail interviews. She used content analysis to identify these benefits. Seven themes emerged: experiencing caring by being listened to and acknowledged, sense of belon

Narrative skills in children with selective mutism: an exploratory study.

Selective mutism (SM) is a rare and complex disorder associated with anxiety symptoms and speech-language deficits; however, the nature of these language deficits has not been studied systematically. A novel cross-disciplinary assessment protocol was used to assess anxiety and nonverbal cognitive, receptive language, and expressive narrative abilities in 7 children with SM and a comparison group of 7 children with social phobia (SP). The children with SM produced significantly shorter narratives than children with SP, despite showing normal nonverbal cognitive and receptive language abilities.

Situation model manipulations differently engage semantic and default mode networks during narrative comprehension.

Narrative comprehension involves creating a mental representation of the events of the story: a "situation model". Maintaining a situation model is thought to be supported by the Default Mode Network (DMN), but recent work suggests that the semantic system, and specifically the ventrolateral anterior temporal lobe (ATL), may play a role in reflecting on and restructuring the situation model via internally-driven or endogenous semantic processing. The present study used fMRI to investigate how ATL and DMN brain regions respond under varying exogenous, or input-driven, and endogenous processing

"We're all closer": narratives of family identity after acquired brain injury.

PURPOSE: Acquired brain injury (ABI) profoundly impacts the whole family. This study explores family identity using a relational, strengths-focused framework to understand how families navigate ABI together. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four adult family units, consisting of four survivors of ABI (1-18 years post-injury) and seven family members (aged 24-74), were interviewed together two/three times. Using Narrative Analysis an overall narrative (gestalt) of ABI as an ongoing family life transformation, encompassing both disconnecting and unifying narratives, was construct. RESULTS: Six interconn

Are Differences Evident in the Ways Boys and Girls Appraise and Interpret Their Traumatic Experiences? A Qualitative Analysis of Youth Trauma Narratives.

The purpose of this study was to explore potential similarities and differences in the ways boys and girls appraise and interpret their traumatic experiences, and better understand how gender roles, performance, and socialization processes may impact trauma experiences, appraisals, and narratives within the context of trauma-focused treatment. We used thematic analysis to analyze the trauma narratives of youth (N = 16) ages 8-16 who had experienced multiple types (M = 5.38) of child maltreatment and who were receiving Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to address clinically elevated p

Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial to adapt a posttraumatic stress disorder intervention of patients with opioid-stimulant polysubstance use receiving methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the Treatment for Harnessing Resiliency, Improving emotional regulation, and empowering indiViduals for a brighter future (THRIVE) study is to adapt an evidence-based posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment for use among a polysubstance population receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) at an opioid treatment program. Polysubstance use of high-risk combinations, such as illicit opioids and stimulants, is a critical public health issue. Individuals who engage in these high-risk combinations are more likely to have histories of childhood trauma, multiple

Narratives from African American/Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Hispanic/Latinx community members in Arizona to enhance COVID-19 vaccine and vaccination uptake.

The state of Arizona has experienced one of the highest novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positivity test rates in the United States with disproportionally higher case rates and deaths among African-American/Black (AA/B), American Indian/Alaska Native (Native), and Hispanic/Latinx (HLX) individuals. To reduce disparities and promote health equity, researchers from Arizona State University, Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Arizona formed a partnership with community organizations to conduct state-wide community-engaged research and outreach. Elaborative Reminiscing and Child Receptive Language in the Context of Maltreatment: The Moderating Role of Maternal Sensitivity.

This study investigated whether the effect of maternal elaborative reminiscing on child language is moderated by maternal sensitivity and whether this association depends on children's experience of maltreatment. A total of 236 mothers and their 3- to 7-year-old children (mean age = 5 years) were observed interacting with experimenter-provided toys in the lab and at home, and maternal sensitivity was coded from these interactions. Of that, 155 of the children had a history of maltreatment with the mother being named a perpetrator, and the remaining dyads were demographically matched with no hi

Reflections on Identity: Narratives of Obstetric Fistula Survivors in North Central Nigeria.

Obstetric fistula is a condition that affects women and can lead to identity changes because of uncontrolled urinary and/or fecal incontinence symptom experiences. These symptoms along with different emerging identities lead to family and community displacement. Using narrative inquiry methodology that concentrates on the stories individuals tell about themselves; interviews were conducted for 15 fistula survivors to explore their perception of identities of living with obstetric fistula. Within a sociocultural context, these identities consist of the "leaking" identity, "masu yoyon fitsari" (

Deontological morality can be experimentally enhanced by increasing disgust: A transcranial direct current stimulation study.

Previous studies empirically support the existence of a distinctive association between deontological (but not altruistic) guilt and both disgust and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Given that the neural substrate underlying deontological guilt comprises brain regions strictly implicated in the emotion of disgust (i.e. the insula), the present study aimed to test the hypothesis that indirect stimulation of the insula via transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would enhance disgust and morality in the deontological domain. A randomized, sham-controlled, within-subject design was use

Nothing and Everything: Fibromyalgia as a Diagnosis of Exclusion and Inclusion.

The diagnostic process promises a label that validates patients' embodied experiences and a road map for living with and treating illness. Drawing on 31 qualitative interviews with women and men in Canada and the United Kingdom who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM), in this article, I examine the participants' experiences of the diagnostic process and how they feel about receiving this label. The interviews reflect that the FM label is plagued by uncertainty because the diagnosis is based on the absence of verifiable pathology. The respondents' narratives also reveal that FM is a vagu

"One of the greatest medical success stories:" Physicians and nurses' small stories about vaccine knowledge and anxieties.

In recent years, the Canadian province of Alberta experienced outbreaks of measles, mumps, pertussis, and influenza. Even so, the dominant cultural narrative maintains that vaccines are safe, effective, and necessary to maintain population health. Many vaccine supporters have expressed anxieties that stories contradicting this narrative have lowered herd immunity levels because they frighten the public into avoiding vaccination. As such, vaccine policies often emphasize educating parents and the public about the importance and safety of vaccination. These policies rely on health professionals
