The rampant basal-cell carcinoma: report and lessons of a case.

The case of a patient with a basal-cell carcinoma over a clavicle that escaped early treatment and became widespreadand deeply burrowing is recounted. It was first treated by radiotherapy, seemed to have been cured thereby, but two years later showed recurrence. It was then treated by Mohs' fresh-tissue technique which cleared the skin but exposed invaded bone and uncertain depth of involvement below. Radical extirpative surgery was subsequently attempted on two occasions, but when invasion was found to have involved major vessels in the neck, further treatment had to be abandoned. Some lesson

[Multiple basaliomas in pityriasis rubra pilaris].

This is a report of a 73 year old patient with pityriasis rubra pilaris and multiple basal cell carcinomas which especially appeared on the face. One of the tumors was located in the anal and perianal region. This is the first report of basal cell carcinomas in a patient with pityriasis rubra pilaris. Further observations will clarify whether there exists a closer relationship between the presence of basal cell carcinoma and pityriasis rubra pilaris. Therefore more attention should be paid to the existence of basal cell carcinoma in patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Basal cell carcinoma of the medial canthal area.

We advise an aggressive approach in ablating basal cell carcinomas which have originated in the region of the medial canthus. Extirpation of the entire tumor under accurate histological control, whether it includes skin only or the entire orbital contents and ethmoid air cells--and reconstruction with one of the described procedures--gives the surgeon an effective armamentarium to successfully treat these potentially lethal lesions.

Reconstruction of 2 Independent Facial Defects Using A Single Paramedian Forehead Flap.

BACKGROUND: The paramedian forehead flap (PMFF) has been well established for use in reconstruction limited to a single nasal outer layer defect and has recently gained recognition as an acceptable alternative to traditional methods of lower eyelid reconstruction. The use of a single, pedicled PMFF for the reconstruction of more than one defect has yet to be described. METHODS: A 59-year-old male patient was originally diagnosed with large squamous cell carcinoma resulting in radical resection and ipsilateral neck dissection. Postoperative final pathology was read as basal cell carcinoma; due

Basal Cell Carcinoma and Syringocystoadenoma Papilliferum Arising in Naevus Sebaceous-A Narrative Review.

Naevus sebaceous (NS) is a congenital cutaneous hamartoma characterised by epidermal, follicular, sebaceous and apocrine components, with a rare but significant potential for malignant transformation, most commonly into basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Syringocystoadenoma papilliferum (SCAP), a rare adnexal tumour, occasionally arises within NS lesions and may progress to malignancy. This study presents a comprehensive narrative review and a rare case of SCAP arising within NS and subsequently transforming into BCC, highlighting the interplay between these lesions. A systematic review adhering to P

Xeroderma pigmentosum variant associated with multiple cancers.

A 62-year-old Japanese man with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) variant is reported. The patient had developed at least 6 basal cell carcinomas, a squamous cell carcinoma, and a malignant melanoma on sun-exposed areas, and an atypical carcinoid on the right lung. In vivo phototesting showed a normal response. The minimal erythema dose of ultraviolet B (UVB) was not lowered and no delayed peaking of the erythema reaction was observed. His skin fibroblasts exhibited higher sensitivity to UV irradiation, but a normal level of unscheduled DNA and RNA synthesis. Cell fusions with XP group A, C, D, E, F,

Mohs' surgery as an approach to treatment of multiple skin cancer in rhinophyma.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer arising within a rhinophyma is rare, less than would be expected from the coexisting chronic active inflammatory process. In rhinophyma, multiple coexisting tumours of different histologic types present an unusual challenge and have never been described in the literature. OBJECTIVE: The treatment approach to multiple tumours occurring in rhinophyma, utilizing Mohs' surgery, is reported and discussed. PATIENT: The case of a 64-year-old farmer with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basosquamous carcinoma occurring in the setting of longstanding rhinophy

[Treatment of head and neck tumors by the combination of bleomycin, methotrexate, cyclophosphamide and corticoid (author's transl)].

The authors report on their findings after analysing the results of an intermittent combination chemotherapy with Bleomycin (B.L.M.), Methotrexate (M.T.X.), Cyclophosphamide and corticoid (B.M.E.M.), in 117 cases of tumors of the Head and Neck. There were 30,0% of complete remission and 77,8% of responsiveness mors. Significant response rates were achieved with this B.M.E.M. combination therapy in: both advanced and not advanced tumors, both well and poor differentiated carcinomas; both exophitic and endophytic tumors.

Friend leukaemia integration-1 expression in malignant and benign tumours: a multiple tumour tissue microarray analysis using polyclonal antibody.

BACKGROUND: Friend leukaemia integration-1 (FLI-1) antibody is a useful marker for Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumour (EWS/PNET) and vascular tumours. However, it is also expressed in subsets of lymphoblastic lymphoma, Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) and desmoplastic small round cell tumour (DSRCT). AIM: To determine expression of FLI-1 in various benign and malignant neoplasms, by immunohistochemical analysis on 4323 tumours using multiple tumour microarrays, as well as on whole sections. RESULTS: FLI-1 was expressed in 46/62 EWS/PNETs, 2/3 olfactory neuroblastomas, 7/102 small ce

Chemoprevention of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide-induced oral carcinogenesis in rats by flavonoids diosmin and hesperidin, each alone and in combination.

The modifying effects of the two flavonoids diosmin and hesperidin given during the initiation and postinitiation phases of oral carcinogenesis initiated with 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) were investigated in male F344 rats. The compounds were tested alone and in combination. At 6 weeks of age, animals were divided into experimental and control groups and fed diets containing 1000 ppm diosmin and 1000 ppm hesperidin and a diet containing both compounds (900 ppm diosmin and 100 ppm hesperidin). At 7 weeks of age, all animals except those treated with each test chemical alone and control gro

Melanoma survivors are at increased risk for second primary keratinocyte carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Recent large cohorts have reported that melanoma survivors are at risk of developing second keratinocyte carcinoma (KC). However, the detailed proportion and risk are still unknown. We aimed to comprehensively analyze the risk of developing keratinocyte carcinoma after primary melanoma. METHODS: We conducted systematic literature research in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library published prior to September 13, 2021. Proportion and standardized incidence ratios (SIR) with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were pooled for assessing the risk. RESULTS: A

Cutaneous carcinoma with mixed histology: a potential etiology for skin cancer recurrence and an indication for Mohs microscopically controlled surgical excision.

Cutaneous carcinomas with mixed histology describe nonmelanoma skin cancers which have more than one histologic subtype. These include basal cell carcinomas with concurrent aggressive growth patterns (such as sclerosing, infiltrating, micronodular, keratinizing, and tumors with perineural involvement) and nonaggressive growth patterns (such as superficial, nodular, and follicular) and squamous cell carcinomas with concurrent poorly differentiated and well-differentiated components. One mechanism of recurrence of nonmelanoma skin cancer may very well result from the inadequate initial treatment

Skin cancer in an atomic veteran: cause or coincidence?

BACKGROUND: Some military personnel who were exposed to ionizing radiation during atomic weapons tests subsequently developed skin cancer, but the cause-effect relationship is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore the possible relationship between exposure to atomic tests and the development of skin cancer. METHODS: We reviewed available literature regarding the effects of radiation on the skin and the case history of a patient in whom more than 300 basal cell carcinomas developed over a 30-year period after exposure to radiation during atomic testing. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Ionizing radiation c

Telomerase activity in melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.

Telomeres are specialized structures consisting of repeat arrays of TTAGGGn located at the ends of chromosomes. They are essential for chromosome stability and, in the majority of normal somatic cells, telomeres shorten with each cell division. Most immortalized cell lines and tumours reactivate telomerase to stabilize the shortening chromosomes. Telomerase activation is regarded as a central step in carcinogenesis and, here, we demonstrate telomerase activation in premalignant skin lesions and also in all forms of skin cancer. Telomerase activation in normal skin was a rare event, and among 1

Use of a versatile axial dorsonasal musculocutaneous flap in repair of the nasal lobule.

We present our 17 years of experience in using a sliding axial musculocutaneous flap from the nasal dorsum in the repair of 53 nasal lobular defects (follow-up 3 to 212 months, mean 47.3 months). This flap is a modification of the classic Rintala flap but is based on a greater understanding of surgical anatomy, the biomechanical properties of skin, and physiology of flaps, all of which allow a more aesthetically satisfactory closure of very distal nasal lobular defects. After excising the tumor, two parallel incisions are made along the sides of the nasal dorsum, and flap is raised in the glid

Management of vulvar cancer.

BACKGROUND: Current therapy of vulvar malignancies is reviewed with emphasis on screening, etiology, diagnosis, staging, and treatment of preinvasive and invasive cancer. METHODS: Screening procedures, etiologic possibilities, diagnostic techniques, staging implications, and treatment approaches are discussed in detail. RESULTS: All malignancies of the vulva should be detected at an early stage, when they are most amenable to curative therapy. Regular examination of all women and increased efforts to educate patients should in time reduce patient and physician delay in diagnosis. The cause o
