The absorption of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas by sciatic nerve bundles from Rana pipiens produces an anaesthetic effect of short duration. Subsequent compound action potential (CAP) levels are higher than before exposure while the conduction velocity (CV) shows only small variation. We describe five patients with a chronic asymmetric sensorimotor neuropathy most pronounced in the upper extremities with focal involvement of individual nerves. Diagnosis was established by electrophysiologic evidence of persistent multifocal conduction block. Sural nerve biopsy in three patients showed primarily demyelinating-remyelinating changes with varying degrees of fiber loss. Four children are presented with otherwise uncomplicated rubella infection suffering from transient carpal tunnel syndrome. The diagnosis was confirmed by repeated measurements of sensory conduction velocity and sensory action potential amplitude. The symptoms were only nocturnal. They disappeared rapidly but the neurophysiological changes normalized slowly. The possibility of a carpal tunnel syndrome should be considered in a child with rubella complaining of numbing or tingling fingers during the night.

In 1959, this disorder was first reported by one of authors (K.H.) (6). Since then, many Japanese cases have been reported and recently some cases are also reported in other countries. Its cause and pathology are still unknown, because no autopsy case was obtained. In this report, some electromyographic findings are described and discussed. This series contain 26 cases (male 23, female 3). Age of onset: 13-33 years old (mean 19.4 years old). Clinical duration: 2-32 years old (mean 9.0 years). Rapidly progressing tetraplegia developed in two 6-year-old dogs, both of which had eaten decayed meat sometime during the 24 hours prior to the onset of paralysis. Both dogs were found to have depressed thyroid function, as indicated by extremely low triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) values. Electromyographic studies revealed some abnormal insertional activity but no abnormal potentials when the fore- and hindlimb muscles were at total rest. Nerve conduction velocity was slightly depressed in 1 of the dogs and severely depressed in the other. Recovery was complete in less than 3 weeks

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is produced by a different metabolic disorder than familial periodic paralysis. In the familial disorder, a myopathic cause is well known, but although electromyography can be used to demonstrate the site of the lesion in TPP, such studies are rare in the medical literature and the results are conflicting. Symptoms of compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel developed in two patients in whom an arteriovenous fistula was created to alleviate chronic renal failure through hemodialysis. Anatomic changes in the wrist area due to the fistula are probably important in the development of this syndrome, and pre-existing uremic peripheral polyneuropathy may also be important in the early development of local symptoms of nerve damage.
