Estimated prevalence of people with cognitive impairment: results from nationally representative community and institutional surveys.

PURPOSE: We address how the national prevalence of cognitive impairment can be estimated from two nationally representative surveys. DESIGN AND METHODS: Data are from the 1999-2001 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and the 1999 National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS). The NHIS represents all community-dwelling people living in the United States, and the NNHS is representative of all nursing home residents. RESULTS: NHIS data show that there are approximately 800,000 community-based elders aged 65 and older with reported confusion or memory loss, and 2.3 million elders with reported limitat

Implementing breathlessness self-management in low- and middle-income countries: co-design of breathlessness self-management resources for use in India.

Breathlessness is prevalent in societies worldwide, with widespread health and socioeconomic impacts. Breathlessness self-management interventions developed in high-income countries (HICs) are promising but require contextual adaptation for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like India, where cultural beliefs, language, and delivery systems differ. We co-designed breathlessness self-management resources for use in India using a programme theory approach and Community-Based Participatory Research methods. We convened three stakeholder groups (Doctors (n = 9), Nurses and allied health (n =

The double policy squeeze on nursing faculties: A critical policy analysis of higher education reform, nursing workforce expansion and nurse educator sustainability.

Nursing workforce policy now asks education systems to expand domestic nurse supply while preparing graduates for older populations, community and primary care, digital health and more complex care pathways. At the same time, universities are expected to demonstrate curriculum innovation, student-centred teaching, quality assurance and institutional performance. The educator capacity required to carry this combined agenda is often assumed rather than planned. This critical policy analysis develops the concept of the double policy squeeze. Using China as an illustrative policy context and linki

Prevalence, consequences, and contributing factors beyond verbal and physical workplace violence against nurses in peripheral hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Globally, nearly one-third of workplace violence (WPV) occurs in the health sector. Exposure to WPV among Jordanian nurses has been widely speculated to be underreported. Understanding of the factors contributing to WPV among nurses and their consequences is limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the consequences and contributing factors of WPV and explore suggestions for reducing WPV among nurses working in peripheral hospitals. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included 431 Jordanian nurses. Data were collected using a self-report instrument between Dec

Randomized clinical study of the prevention of pulmonary complications after thoracoabdominal resection by two different breathing techniques.

AIMS: This study aims to describe the experiences of Learning Disability Nurses (RNLDs) when they are with clients who may be in pain but who cannot communicate their feelings verbally. BACKGROUND: Research indicates that general nurses often find it difficult to perceive their patients' pain accurately, but no studies refer to the experiences of RNLDs. For people with severe learning disabilities this could lead not only to unnecessary suffering, but also to long-term tissue damage and may even prove fatal. METHOD: A phenomenological approach was adopted, as unrecognized pain is a subject a

Supporting Public Safety by Encouraging Nurses' Use of Alternative-to-Discipline Programs.

Alternative-to-discipline (ATD) programs were developed to address substance use disorder (SUD) among licensed health professionals by offering a recovery-oriented monitoring pathway in lieu of public disciplinary action. ATD programs do not provide treatment; they protect the public by facilitating evaluation and treatment engagement, monitoring individualized recovery plans, and, when appropriate, safe return to practice. While ATD programs are applicable for a range of health professions, nursing serves as a useful case because it is a profession in which licensure oversight, employer actio

Infection Prevention and Control in the Intensive Care Unit: Preventing the Spread of Multi-Drug-Resistant Organisms.

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing threat to human health and especially relevant in critical care settings. Intensive care unit patients are particularly vulnerable to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) because of characteristic immunosuppression, reliance on medical devices, treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and exposure to the hospital environment. Nurses play a critical role in preventing the spread of MDROs by leading coordinated, multimodal interventions including antibiotic and laboratory stewardship, passive and active pathogen surveillance, implementation and de-escalat

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: a review.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rapidly progressive and ultimately fatal disorder of the central nervous system. CJD occurs worldwide with an incidence of approximately .5-1 new cases per million population per year. Despite numerous epidemiological and laboratory studies, the etiologic agent and mode of transmission remain unclear. Clinical diagnosis is challenging and is based on clinical symptoms. No specific treatment is available and medical management remains limited to supportive care. Health care workers must be well informed about necessary precautions and decontamination procedu

Response of Healthcare Service Providers, to the Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu and Ituri Provinces.

Healthcare service providers are crucial for effective responses to disease outbreaks. However, their performance is dependent on the level of system inputs, people's perception of the system, and their willingness to use health services. This study investigated the functionality of health services and healthcare providers in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the tenth Ebola virus disease outbreak. It employed qualitative methods, including 24 in-depth interviews of healthcare providers and community leaders, and 12 focus-group discussions with community members. The responses showed tha

Nurse-managed free clinic fosters care connection for homeless population.

The goal of this article is to demystify the process that healthcare providers must follow when working with homeless patients who sustain injuries or exhibit illnesses that necessitate rehabilitation care. Observations made over a period of more than 12 years at an inner-city medical/psychiatric nurse-managed free clinic that delivers cutting-edge services and educates multidisciplinary students to care for disenfranchised populations led the author to several conclusions: homeless people frequently lose their identity as individuals when facing healthcare providers; previous negative percept
