The Potential of Integrated Nurse-Led Models to Improve Care for People With Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia are extremely common, debilitating, and costly. Although diagnostic guidelines and effective management options exist, management is suboptimal, with long waiting lists, delayed diagnosis, and poor patient outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to explore and evaluate evidence for existing models of care for functional gastrointestinal disorders. Thirty-eight studies pertaining to the diagnosis or management of functional gastrointestinal disorders were found; however, only 6 investigated a

Emergency Department Placement and Management of Indwelling Urinary Catheters in Older Adults: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice.

UNLABELLED: Indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are placed frequently in older adults in the emergency department (ED). Though often a critical intervention, IUCs carry significant risks. Our objective was to examine current knowledge, attitudes, and practice of emergency nurses and other providers regarding IUC placement and management in older adults. METHODS: We surveyed ED providers at a large, urban, academic medical center. We developed questionnaires using items from previously validated instruments and questions created for this study. We also assessed providers' management of 25 uniq

Application of the combined PBL-CBL teaching method of anaphylactic shock prevention and care in the fundamental nursing course.

INTRODUCTION: In recent decades, numerous studies have explored Problem-based Learning (PBL) or Case-based Learning (CBL) alone, but few have investigated their combination. Fundamental nursing is a core course for nursing undergraduates, and anaphylactic shock (a life-threatening clinical emergency) is a key teaching content. Traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) lacks interaction and fails to enhance critical thinking, highlighting the need for teaching methods. METHODS: Nursing undergraduates from a medical college were randomly divided into two groups (n=50 each): the traditional group

A continuing educational initiative to develop nurses' mental health knowledge and skills in rural and remote areas.

At a time of ever increasing mental health problems in Australian society, the nursing profession is beset by problems of an insufficient workforce specialising in this area. Not only is there a shortage of suitable trained specialist mental health nurses, but undergraduate nursing programs inadequately prepare students for practical mental health nursing. Fewer students are enrolling in mental health nursing, and many nurses are leaving the workforce. A particular problem in rural Australia is that there is a lack of specialist mental health services, and nurses are being increasingly relied

Inspiring a culture of ownership through mutual accountability: A health care system's approach to connecting bedside expertise with boardroom strategy.

A health care system's approach to integrating the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Healthy Work Environment (HWE) standards across organizational levels demonstrates a replicable pathway for aligning bedside expertise with boardroom strategy, an essential linkage in organizational strategic planning. Partnership between the nurse executive team and direct care nurses is critical to achieving nursing excellence. The HWE framework can be operationalized into the nursing strategic plan through nursing professional governance structures and performance improvement initiatives, promoti

Implementation of Concussion Management Policies in High Schools: The Critical Role of School Nurses.

Evidence-based practices in concussion management (CM) have been codified into legislation. However, legislation is varied, and implementation is narrowly evaluated. School nurses hold a unique position to assess the implementation of health policies. The implementation of concussion management policies across Massachusetts high schools was evaluated by the school nurse. A cross-sectional survey was sent to school nurses (N = 304), and responses (n = 201; 68.1% response rate) were tallied whereby higher scores indicated more practices being implemented. One open-text question was included to e

Comparing the Level of Knowledge on External Ventricular Drain Care: A National Study of Neurosurgical and General ICU Nurses.

BACKGROUND: An External Ventricular Drain (EVD) is a catheter inserted into one or both of the lateral ventricles of the brain. The indications for inserting this drain include intracranial haemorrhage, severe traumatic brain injury, to monitor intracranial pressure and to drain excess Cerebral Spinal Fluid. To ensure safe care for patients with an EVD, nurses need evidence-based knowledge in providing quality care. AIM: The purpose of this study was to describe and compare nursing knowledge and practices regarding patients with EVDs between nurses in General Intensive (GICU) and Neurosurgica

Epidemic-induced changes in nursing students' professional identity: a qualitative investigation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the impact and mechanisms of COVID-19 on the professional identity of nursing students, providing theoretical and practical insights to inform nursing education reform. METHOD: This study employed Colaizzi's descriptive phenomenological method to explore nursing students' experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data collection continued until information saturation was achieved. Data analysis followed Colaizzi's seven-step approach: (1) reading all participants' descriptions to gain a general understanding, (2) extracting significant statements, (3) f

Nurses Perspectives on Low-Dose Methadone for Pain in Nursing Homes: Semi-structured Interviews.

Background: Chronic pain is prevalent in nursing homes, yet safe and effective long-acting opioid options are limited. Studies suggest that low-dose methadone (LDM) may be an ideal alternative. However, its use in nursing homes remains rare and perspectives from nursing staff on its practical benefits and challenges are underreported. Objectives: To explore nurses' perspectives on LDM for pain in nursing home residents and assess potential benefits and barriers to its adoption. Design: A qualitative study employing semi-structured interviews and a modified phenomenological approach. Setting/Su

Natural moisturising factor constituents in South African nursing students.

BACKGROUND: The majority of South African healthcare workers are Black Africans with dark-pigmented skin. Studies on how the markers of skin barrier function and natural moisturising factor (NMF) compare between dark and light-pigmented skin are limited. Quantifying NMF in a nursing student population during their practical training at university may provide valuable insight into their potential susceptibility to skin conditions associated with low NMF. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to quantify and compare NMF content of Black African, Mixed Race and White nursing students fro

Predicting nursing home placement among home- and community-based services program participants.

BACKGROUND: Several states offer publicly funded-care management programs to prevent long-term care placement of high-risk Medicaid beneficiaries. Understanding participant risk factors and services that may prevent long-term care placement can facilitate efficient allocation of program resources. OBJECTIVES: To develop a practical prediction model to identify participants in a home- and community-based services program who are at highest risk for long-term nursing home placement, and to examine participant-level and program-level predictors of nursing home placement. STUDY DESIGN: In a retr

Mobilizing nurses to address the opioid misuse epidemic.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic is a major health challenge in the United States. PURPOSE: Members from the American Academy of Nursing joined to write a consensus paper about nurses' role in the opioid epidemic. METHODS: The panel reviewed the history of the opioid epidemic and policies to care for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) and how registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice nurses (APRNs) could increase care for people with OUD. DISCUSSION: Recommendations are presented to advance policies that empower RNs and APRNs to abate the opioid epidemic. CONCLUSION: Recommendation
